A guy at the poolroom told me that tables have been the same hight for over a hundred years...(30 inches to the slate)

If that is true, since man on average is taller now, shouldnt the table hight be raised...

I'm thinking 14"

you could really change the game with something like that...

give everybody a jump cue...

it could be like a cross between hopscotch and tic tac toe

seriously I am more worried about level than I am about height:thumbup:

It would be very good for players with bad backs. I'd like to give a few more inches a try:grin-devilish: Johnnyt

I'd love em to be 6 inches higher. They are about nut high right now and if you take into effect the forces of gravity you can figure in about how long I have wearing boxers.

/end comic relief

Didn't seem to cross my mind 15 years ago, but it does now. Makes me think of The Color of Money. The part where Paul Newman shoots with Cruise and asks if they sawed the legs of the table.

lol i wouldn't mind a few extra inches as well if you know what I mean!

seriously I don't think it's a problem - if anythign of that nature does need to be changed then i'd say making the tables ten foot would be a better change!

Absolutely they should be higher. The regulations are long outdated. Snooker allows heights up to 34", and pool should do the same. Much easier on the back and shoulders.

I have my table at 32" and it is far more comfortable than the ones at the pool hall. I may put it a little higher on the next set up.

A lot a players would like 10' tables back (not me, I'm a 7' guy). The 10's won't be coming back anytime soon, you need about a 10x20 area for them. Sq ft is just too steep now. If someone opened a room with all 10's they would have too charge an arm and a leg for time. Johnnyt

You might think I'm weird, but IMO table height does have a noticable impact on the game. Look at the Filipino's. They look so comfortable at the table because it's relatively higher to them.

Before you fire up your keyboard, I am NOT saying that this is why they play so well, but it's just another reason. Their small stature becomes a hindrance when they have to stretch for shots though.

Taller players are either forced to bend their knees excessively or spread their legs excessively to stay close to the table. Watch the taller players, they tend to have more elevation in their setup. The Filipino's are as close to level as possible.

In the past, I've played better when on taller tables. Every inch is very noticable. Low tables make it more difficult for me...I feel like I'm shooting at my knees...and jacked up.

I've worn out the front pockets in my denims from rubbing on the tables. I'm somewhere between 6'-3" and 6'-4" BTW.

NOOOOO! Man on average is higher, but more Asian women are playing, lol. I would love to be able to sit on the edge of the table like Monica did, without having the other leg lift off the floor.

People on average have been getting a little taller, but they've been drinking a lot more beer and getting fatter at the same time. Some players are belly hooked on any shot that's more than arm's length from the edge of the table. Any higher and they will need a bridge for every shot.

All the more reason to raise the tables. Keeping pool players fit is good for the game.

Oh, boo hoo. You tall guys get all the chicks, now you want me to use an orange crate to reach the table, like baby Mosconi did?

Rich <-- wants to encourage Lucy Liu to play pool

I'm thinking that tables used to be taller and somewhere around 50 years ago, they started getting shorter.

Any antique table I play on seems taller than the modern commercial tables I've played on.

Fred <~~~ bad back on short tables

I think it evens out as game play and stance evolved.

When stance were more upright, the cues were shorter back then 57" versus 58" as the current standard, right?

When I watch 9-ball on TV, most of the Pros stand squatting low and sight down the cue with their chin nearly touching the shaft. A stance like that be more comfortable for taller players, whereas a more upright stance be more natural for shorter players.

How High

Hell I am 6 ft 5" tall & 64 years old lets raise them up a couple inches.
I have played on a snooker table that was 31.5 inches & it was much more comfortable to me but,
I can see where it would be a little more difficult for a shorter player.

How many trees are to be killed to heighten every table worldwide for you giants?

Snooker tables are taller and because it was the dominant game in Canada for quite awhile, when Dufferin came out with their pool tables, they were always higher than the ones in the States. Then I had to wear my 4" heeled pool shoes!
