The winner of the OB Ladies Tour in Texas that is on the AZ front page is Si Meng Chen, the 18 yo Chinese girl Jay Helfert and myself have been talking about. She came over by herself from China to go 49-1(that's right 49-1) to win her first tournament in the states. Her next tournament will be in the Ultimate 10 ball (WPBA division) at Tunica. If you get a chance to watch her on the stream or at the casino, don't pass it up as she is something special. She is/was trained by Wu. Johnnyt

Just to clarify this was her second tournament in the United States. She won a WPBA US Open qualifier April 20-21. She beat Karen Corr in the finals.

Great player, but not exactly new on the scene. Certainly mentionable with names like Ga Young Kim, Allison Fisher, Jasmin Ouschan, and Xiaofang Fu, but Kelly Fisher stands alone at the top right now in women's pro pool.

Agree with those who say that Chen is a very special player that you'll enjoy watching very much.

I wonder if she has a stake horse in the U.S? It would be cool to see her match up with Kelly, Chris, or one of the 17-20 yo males that are the U.S rising stars. Johnnyt

She would not fare well with either gambling. I watched her play some and she had her struggles, as I can tell she does not like slow cloth, because she's a finesse player. So I'd say if she was to gamble with Kelly or Chris on a table not having new slick cloth like she's use to then she would have much trouble outrunning those 2 players as they have power games suited better for slower cloth where muscling the ball around is a must.

This is an amateur tour per say. The likes of Kim White and Vivian are barred. Si Meng was allowed to play because the WPBA the almighty WPBA does not recognize her as she's never played WPBA events. So she came here for the ultimate 10 ball qualifier spot. Just goes to show you how great the WPBA is, they don't recognize the woman ranked #3 in the WORLD. The WPBA which has what maybe 3 events per year max thinks they are the high authority on pool. Shameful, and disrespectful to regional tours that pay them money. 2 years ago they allowed yu ram cha to play in the regional tour championship although she was not qualified, guess what happened, she played against all the regional qualified girls and no one ever broke 3/4 games. These were the best regional tour girls in the states racing to 9 with 10k added. Way to go WPBA, you got it all right again. Lol.

:grin-square:
So, Joe. How do you feel about the WPBA?

holy crap, what's the format that allowed for 49-1 to be even possible? She can't be THAT unstoppable?

500% agree!

That the WPBA makes recognized professionals have to ROB regional events and tours to "qualify" is nutty. Why not simply give spots to the WPA for foreign players and let the WPA rank list determine who gets them. If the spots aren't claimed by x-date then they fall back to the regional tours.

Also regarding the cloth it's the reverse problem that the non-Chinese pros had when first coming to China and playing on the slick stuff here. I advised Kelly and anyone who would listen to buy the cloth and put in on their tables at home and that's what Kelly did and so she started being really comfortable on the fast cloth.

If Si Ming or any of the top Chinese players would train on the slower cloth they would adapt real quick.

I did see a real world example of the difference though. Luat played a top Taiwanese here in Xiamen and the first night on the fast cloth the Taiwanese player won while Laut struggled. The next night playing on a Gold Crown with slow cloth Luat was a beast and the Taiwanese player struggled. When the cloth grabs the ball instead of letting it slide you can do more stuff with it. Really is a different game on the two surfaces.

What do they use there?

Andy and YTT mostly. Supposedly the cloth is like Simonis 860 but in fact it doesn't ACT like 860.

Another thing they do here is wax the balls incessantly. So combined with a slicker cloth the waxed balls just slide and skid a lot making it very tough to predict what is going to happen.

The cloth is good cloth, just different than most non-Chinese/Taiwanese players are used to.

sjm, what is the record of Kelly vs Si Meng Chen in tournament play. Johnnyt

Absolutely no idea. Still, as the reigning champion at each of Amway, the World 9-Ball Championship and the China Open, Kelly stands tall above the competition. Several ladies are strong enough to knock her off the top rung of the ladder, but right now, Kelly is the one to beat in the most elite events in women's pro pool.
