Hey Guys,

I Just got finished re-watching the Siegel vs Zuglan match in the '92 US Open 14.1, and once again it was amazing !

And i was wondering how was the rest of the Tourney, has anyone seen it?

What were the rest of the match-ups and are they available for purchase on DVD?

Thanks
Steve

I was ringside for that tourney. It was a great tournament with some great matchups. Mike Zuglan ran 148 or 149 on Ray Martin, Tony Robles had a 100+ ball run, Cisero Murphy was there playing. Dallas West played solid throughout with many high runs, ahhh the great memories.

That must of been because Zuglan just witnessed first hand on how to run 150 Balls.

JK.... Zuglan is a great shooter, just had to give a little banter !!!!

there is a great player review video with Dick Lane and Johnny Archer from that tourney. Only Dick Lane does the commentary but it's good. I believe they have it on DVD now.

Sigel also played a good match in the finals IIRC. 2 innings I think.

The best commentary ever though was in 2000 at the US Open for the Ortmann/Rempe match. :D

I know you're kidding, Sigel did not have to beat Zuglan back then, Mike Z. has always played great Straight pool. His best game, by far.

> That is the most flawless 150-out ever. No banks, and he only got a little out of line twice.

Johnny also had a 150-out during that tournament.

Mizerak had a 137 on his first inning of the tournament.

Robles had a 107.

Dick Lane had a 109 I think.

Zuglan had a 148,and should have had a 150-out,but instead of shooting at one of 3 open balls,he shot what he thought was a dead ball out of the stack, and missed. In his own words,he malfunctioned. Tommy D.

I attended this event in 1992 and was there for Sigel's 150 and out. The best remembered subplot of that evening was that Zuglan ran 148 against Ray Martin in his very next match.

Other noteworthy things form that memorable event:

On the night before the player's meeting, there was a short exhibition given by Mike Sigel and a 24-year old named Johnny Archer, who had won the world nine ball championship not long before that. It was part of a benefit for the National Leukemia Society, and most in attendance, myself included, had never seen Archer play before. It took place on the ground floor of Rusty Staub's restaurant on 47th Street. Also in attendance were Nick Varner, Loree Jon and Sammy Jones, and Jerry Orbach.

Mosconi and Caras were sitting together in the front row as Sigel made his run. Mosconi would not be alive for the 1993 event, dying just a few months later.

At the same time Sigel was making his run, Dallas West was also in the midst of a big run, and Dallas ran over 100 himself. Trying to keep tabs on both runs was quite a chore.

Zuglan was no cinderella story. It was known that he was playing great straight pool coming into that event, and none other than Grady Matthews had predicted that he would win the event.

In the next afternoon, Dallas West and Mike Zuglan met each other in the losers bracket final, with West winnng easily. I didn't see the match, but heard through the grapevine that Dallas got out in two innings.

After the women's final was played, and prior to the onset of the men's final, there was an exhibition given by Mike Massey. None of the fans and almost none of the pros in attendance had ever seen Mike's show, and the crowd and his fellow pros went nuts when Mike did some of his stuff.

Yes, it was quite an event.

I'm 100% sure that Dallas didn't run 100 at the same time Sigel was playing Zuglan. He and Sigel were not only on runs at the same time but the pace of the match was almost the same. They were shooting break shots at the same time. If you look at the match again I think Dallas missed around 85 or so.

The match with Dick Lane and Archer is a good one. I also enjoyed the commentary by Dick Lane. He is very complimentary of Johnny (for good reason) but he also shot very sporty in this match and likely the rest of the tourney. I thought it was interesting that Dick commented he was shooting with a Meucci for this tourney. Sounds like this tournament was something special all around.

Stand corrected, I just remember switching seats many times in that session to watch both runs.

Mike Zuglan Vs Cisero Murphy is another great match from this tournament. There is a classic safety battle, as well as a 109 and out run by Mike. It is available on Accu-Stats - player review by Mike Zuglan with Bill Staton.
