Sigel blows it in IPT commentary!

ive always wondered why red and yellow balls arent used like in english 8 ball - it makes seeing where your balls are much easier. obvioulsy i can understand it not becoming standard, because the likes of 9 ball is played regularly too and you'd need two sets of balls.

but for tournaments like this, why not reds and yellows? or indeed two other colours. claret and blue aston villa colours maybe...

Also a side note, i don't actually mind them using the ball colour to descibe the balls sometimes, because I've gotta be honest I only know the numbers of them from one to nine, for obvious reasons. (and more recently ten as well). like a fair few people i guess.

Captain Beefheart,
I can see that it makes it easier for a television viewer, BUT how the heck will the commentator ever discuss proper strategy and sequence? How will the players ever call their shot without confusion?

it may make it slightly more awkward to commentate on, but nothing major really. And 99% of the time calling your shot wouldnt be a problem, you just point to the ball, plus its also pretty obvious where you're aiming.

The main advantage I think is it makes patterns and position easier and more enjoyable i feel - you can see all of your balls in your peripheral vision at once - with spots and stripes you need to look harder for your balls. Plus viewers can see more effictively the route the player has taken to run the balls out.

Hey, I'm just playing devil's advocate to be honest though, i'm not saying i'd definitely switch em tomorrow if i could. i just think it's worth discussing.

I agree. Billy, if someone says this while I'm playing and I hear it, I'm gonna tell him it's a concession...

...This is nothing personal, and it's entirely possible that you meant in your post that you say it only to a spectator. But any good player who says something like this to the opponent knows why he is saying it - it's a last-ditch effort to shark his opponent into not running out...

When I am playing an excellent player and I miss a shot, then say "I just lost". I usually say this to myself silently. Or sometimes to a teammate in a whisper.

So correct, my opponent never hears me say this. Example, last night my opponent played a good safety on me, I missed my ball on a 2 rail kick by a hair and gave him ball-in-hand. Then I silently said to myself "Darn! (not exact word, but that will do) This is not the player to give ball-in-hand to - I am a done cookie - he will run out - I lost."

.....I suppose when you play golf it is okay to nudge the ball with your club?

The only remotely comparable situation to the break shot or to 'ball in hand' in golf is when you are playing your tee shot and the answer to your question is in fact yes it is certainly ok to nudge, tap down, feather or indeed even accidentally knock the ball off the tee with your club, provided you didn't do any of those things in the course of making a stroke. No penalty is incurred.

So maybe that wasn't the best analogy to use in support of your line of argument Jake:confused: :D

I watched this for the first time on OLN with my husband and he thought Sigel's commentary was totaly ridiculous. "Girls"?? He calls Allison and Karen "Girls"?? What a friggin chauvanistic egomaniacal b@st@rd he is!! Plus, he can't commentate worth a sh$t! It's a good thing his stupid blonde wife doesn't understand where he comes from! Or did, once... unfortunately, he did reproduce...

I won't schedule the IPT on divo any time soon. Mike Sigel is one joke of a commentator!!

it was a rambling discourse indeed .... gerda looked like the best 8-ball player to me...if you took five of these players ( that i've seen so far ) , to the vnea in vegas i'm not sure they would win a match .....

I never thought i would be doing this...and i cant believe what i am about to type..but im gona defend "somewhat" Earl the Pearl. I in no way agree with this man comments about women...I love to see a woman shot a great game just as much as i like to see a man shoot a great game..great pool is just great pool period. But to call Earl pathetic and say he cant think three balls ahead..I know he is a bit out there..but there is a reason why some of you are posting on Azbilliards and he is an active member of the IPT. Also..if ur name isnt on a Plaque that says US-Open at least two times, dont dare say the man cant play...I believe in give credit where credit is due...i promise you those of you that said some of the things about earl if you were put on front street in front of all of us other AZer's and told to put up 500 bucks of your money on a race to 7 with Earl the Pearl...you could hear a mouse piss on cotton in the room when he asked you to play. If you want to talk about his attitude fine..but dont question a multi-winner of one hardest Tourn. to win and Hall of Famer about his ability to play...hell i dont really like earl but i respect him and fear him as a pool player....it time some people on this forum understood that they are only legends in their own minds. Or else we would be writing quotes about them on this forum.

I was watching this with a bar player type...

Note that when I play very good players and I make one mistake, I'll say to other people "I just lost!". And the other player may still have all his balls on the table, but I know he will run out on me.

I guess you went up to everyone and whispered it to each

And with some very very good players, if they win the lag for the break, I will say "I lost!". I know the player will break and run out.

But "say" can also mean "say it in my mind so no on can hear it because I looked foolish saying I "said" it verbally." OK.

I've seen other players do this too. Say they lost if they make one error, because they know the other player will run out.

Sounds like you are copying the bad habits of the bar bangers you play with.

But my friend I was watching this with has never played around these very good players, so he thought it was a rule thing. Scratch and it is loss of game? So he asked me about this. I told my friend he just was saying the other player would run out if given a chance, so it would pretty much be a guaranteed loss if he had scratched.

The "race to one" tournies you play in can be brutal. You only get one game.

And I saw this at the IPT qualifier in Seattle. If they did not make a ball on the break, would scratch, or miss a shot, that was it! The other player would run out guaranteed. FYI there was almost no scratching or missing of shots in Seattle. Mostly they would not make a ball on the break, then that was it. Other player would run out.

Sounds like you were watching some good Pool being played.

The issue here (getting back on topic) isn't just Sigel's comment about "he would have lost" after scratching on the break - it's also that the folks putting together the show *left the comment in* in editing.

I still chuckle at the other commentator's continual (well, after three shows) comments about Sigel being the "current sitting KOTH", implying that somehow, he fought his way to the top, as opposed to just being plopped there as a figurehead. :D

How many times have you heard or said, "Stick a fork in my, I'm done."? It's the same thing. Not really conceding, not really nice, but just a way to blow off steam and relieve your own pressure.

Of course, Earl takes it a notch higher and bemoans the loser aspect all the way home. :o

I just enjoyed that we may have got the quote of the year from Earl during last night's telecast...."Stay in school AND shoot pool." :)

I liked the part after that now i have to add a girl to my list or something like that.

How would all of you like to spend 14 hard hours in a room producing these shows?! It's not easy and very draining on the brain! Everyone complains there is NO POOL on TV and NO MONEY and now there is and it's knocked every which way possible. That is why the IPT is not going for the everyday pool player, it's plain to see. The players are are never rewarded from you people who have nothing better to do. And to personally attack them with DIRTY language and their spouses is way out of line!!! You should be ashamed of yourself! But it's obvious you have no respect for yourself or others.

You should be ashamed of yourself posting this! To bring his children into a open forum is so disrespectful and uncalled for! You don't live their lives or even know them. Much less calling him a b....and his wife a stupid blonde, who by the way happens to be a successful business woman! You need to get a life!

Your post is very well stated. To verbally insult Mike Sigel's wife is very much out of line.

Thank you, Cptbreak, for taking the time to post your opinion, an opinion, I might add, that I agree with wholeheartedly.

I *know* the IPT will be a big success and is the right direction to go.

How do I know this?

History is full of examples of people who have come along and done amazing things. And they were fought tooth and nail every step of the way. Louis Pasteur is one of many examples. He told the world there were tiny germs which caused disease. Said surgeons should sterilize their instruments before surgery. He was ridiculed and fought every step of the way by those in the medical profession. They thought it was silly to boil their instruments - ridiculous that tiny little "germs" could cause death, etc. He was right though.

Then there was Eisenhower who came up with the plan to land on the beaches of France in WWII. He was fought tooth and nails by *everybody* when he suggested this plan. His plan worked.

So *because* many seem to be fighting the IPT tooth and nails, I would say this is the right direction to go. This is an interesting phenomenon of human nature...
