In a tournament. Score is 10-3 Sigel. Varner breaks and runs 3 racks.

Score is now 10-6 Sigel. Varner to break.

Sigel offers Varner a proposition. They will make the score 10-10 if Varner gives the break to Sigel.

You are Varner. What do you say? What do you think he said?
 
I would say no to any opponent. I would also guess then Nick said no as well. I would never cede control of the table willingly, period.

You're right. Varner said no! I do not remember the outcome because it was a story from Grady Mathews. But I have a feeling the match might have been recorded by accustats.
 
Very interesting. I'm gonna find out if Nick remembers this and if so what happened.

I would have advised Varner to say YES.
Interesting propositions here...the table must've been playing soft.

How can one break be worth four games, even on a bar box?
Would Nick have bet on winning the match at 10-6 down?
Would Mike have bet that he could break and run?
 
The table was playing soft. Mike's wing ball was going every time. Varner said NO and mounted a tremendous comeback beating Sigel 11-10. This was when NICK was NICK and won everything in sight for a long time. He had no GIVE-UP in his bones.

He said No, and yes it's on AccuStats, I have it. I think they called it the "corner ball match" because the corner ball went in every time, so the guy breaking just needed a clean shot to start a string of racks.

I may be wrong if this was the match or not, but I think Varner made some super kick shots during this set to keep himself at the table.
 
9 ball? Against Sigel it wouldn't matter what I said but I'd probably take the proposition figuring my odds of keeping Sigel in his chair for 5 racks are slim.
 
Ok, just spoke with Nick and he rtemembers this fairly well. It was at the US Open and Nick was down at one point 9-2 mike hooked Nick somehow. Mike turned to Nicks wife and said "He's gonna kick that ball in and winn the match" so first his prediction came true as Nick did get out of the snooker and kick a ball in.
When they got to 10-10 Nick said he still has no idea how he missed the 9-ball and it was a very easy shot. However the cueball and the 9-ball landed frozen together. Nick expected Mike to play some kind of safe but He just went mental on the shot and the rest is history.

Ah, now I know I've seen the end of that match.
..I believe whitey ended on the floor.
Mike just gave up, even though he had safety options.....
..that's one thing you can say about Nick Varner, he would still look for
a winning shot.

He told me at that time of his life and the way he was playing it seemed like the impossible wasn't too much to ask for and knew given even a slight opportunity he was gonna take over. In his words "Once I put the squeeze on em thye always seemed to come peacefully after that" :)
 
I recall the wing ball went 100% --- it was gaffy, imo.

Mike knew it, which is why he made the comment to begin with (I'm sure he knew he was in trouble if he didn't run the entire set out the way the table was breaking). Nick had the steering wheel to win and dogged it bad, leaving Mike nothing (balls kissed in an ugly way).

It was so sickening to watch. Mike had a meltdown because Nick was basically handed the game as a reward for dogging it. I think Mike swatted at it at light-speed and launched balls everywhere.

I'm a huge fan of both players--- but that match wasn't an example of Nick squeezing anything (sorry, Nick). :)
 
Nick's entire comeback -- running 8 impossible-looking racks, *kicking* shots in from everywhere in this match and including Mike's mental breakdown/give up shot that immediately garnered the match for Nick -- can be seen on Accu-Stats "Pool's Greatest Shots and Bloopers - Volume I"

I remember that match and gasping as Nick missed that side shot. It taught me to don't take those side shots for granted. This was the championship match was it not?

i saw mike play a losers round match and to say he 1-stroked every shot would be stretching the story. he slammed the balls around, usually pointing his stick in the correct direction.

he lost that set too.
 
I've seen this match, not recently, but I don't remember the score being 10-6 at the time Mike gave the offer.

I thought he scratched on a break at 10-8, or another two game lead, and then gave Nick that offer.

Even if Nick said yes, would the tourney director allow something like this?

Not sure. This was a story I heard via Grady. I can't say that I remember what he said with 100% accuracy.
 
Seems like this was one of AccuStats video blooper tapes of Hill Hill matches from the 90s.

Varner misses the 9ball and the cue and 9 end up frozen in the middle of the table where Sigel doesn't have a shot and makes his famous 'rolling eyes and Head' move like he's been handed a stinky potato.

Sounds familiar anyway.... :rolleyes:
