SJM at the 2023 International Open

I agree, but it's water under the bridge.
I don't know about the HOF women users, but the men had theirs.

Like Fran, I felt a similarway about Eric Heiden in Speed skating.... Because my personal Prejudices.
I was 9 yrs older than Eric at the time he was 5 Olympic golds.

I was the best indoor short track speed skater in the US in the early sixties.
As I grew, I always kept up with the sport, we always heard about this Eric Heiden kid.

This is the era right before drug tests & steroids came to sports.
Eric won, the shorts, the mediums and the longs?
This is a winter sport.....

My prejudice, like Frans with chemical warfare HOF players is this.

Isiah Bolt, the Jamaican runner fastest man on the planet, I think in the 500 and the 1000 meters.
BOLT.... He never competed, in the 1500/5000/or10000.meter races.

My sporting prejudice makes me think this way about this moment in time.
In speed skating, like track, no single speed skater, or Track Star has ever won the shorts, mediums and the longs.

We learned, You need a different body to accomplish that.
The 500 and 1500 are quite different than the 5 and 10K.

I thought, he Must of been using steroids, my reasons as to why his physical/body was able to will ALL divisions.

But from a more mature perspective that I have now, he was more likely at the transition point in our sport where summer training was in put into place.

In the 50's we only skated in the winters, so he may of been in that perfect time/slot of evolution of sports, to be able to win the Short/Med/Longs by summer cross training and good coaching.
Winters were long, cold/damp/snowy in WI and Chicago in the 50-60's.

There is a rule in the books about respect WPA officials. Was this incident reported to the WPA board members? And should there be a punishment in place for poor conduct at events as an audience?
He didn't know I was a board member at the time, so he wasn't breaking any rules. So to him, I was just some woman who was annoying him. He had options as to how he could have responded to me. I guess that's how he decided to act towards someone he considered to be a nobody.

Not for nothing, but nothing you say about *Usain* Bolt matches up with anything. He was a 100m sprinter. 500m (not a thing) was not his thing. Can we try again based on the event he actually did?

Stu,

As usual, awesome recap summary! I agree that Yapp’s performances against Gorst and Alcaide were “breathtaking.” He is definitely now a force to be reckoned with.

It was a pleasure meeting and spending time with you. I also thought we “proved compatible.” Thanks again for helping to facilitate my VIP seating luxury. It really made my first Int’l Open a special experience, and I truly appreciate that.

Best regards!
How would you compare this to Ko's whitewash of Yapp?
That was a fun one.
Both were good, sounds like this might is the better.
What Ko did was impressive, but I think Yapp was equally impressive in the semi and final of this tournament. Maybe watching it live and in person biased me a little.

WADA has a list of drugs considered to be performance-enhancing. There really is a reason for drug testing that makes sense. Unfortunately, occasionally there are false positives that can happen or traces of something that don't really affect a players' performance that can hurt a player. But overall, drug testing isn't a bad thing. And maybe some of those players who couldn't compete without the drugs would have done just fine if they only gave themselves a chance. But we'll never know.

Niels Feijen --- yes, he puts up a good front, doesn't he? At the 8 ball WC in Fujairah, UAE, when I was on the WPA board, I was sitting in the stands watching the finals (which Ralf Souquet won). Feijen was sitting nearby in the stands and talking and laughing with guys on either side. He had his laptop open and was typing and talking and laughing. I felt that what he was doing was disrespectful to the players and the event and asked him if he would mind closing the laptop until after the finals were over.

He said to me, "F-You. Go F yourself, bitch. You can't tell me what to do." He didn't know me. This was our first encounter. Then he and the guys around him all laughed and he continued on typing and laughing with his friends. Forgetting what he said to me for a minute, how about showing some respect for the guys who were playing?

Yeah, really a class act, that Niels. Congrats on his HOF induction.
Fran, thx for this info.

Kinda,
unless Neils was just a kid at the time.
I know when we were kids we never were otta line. ;)

What year was this/his mature comeback?

We've all miscued big time in our youth. Tho that's some strong language.

Did or will you ever ask em why he was So Aggressive with his response, since you brought it up?

My great/churchgoing neighbors next door 8 yrs now we talked allot, wonderful people, just this summer she turned on me or 6 weeks, for not pulling weeds, wouldn't say hi or talk and went outta her way to avoid ME. I've been in their house many times and help move furniture or?.

After that, she went out of her way to talk to me, apologized why?.....
I found out, allot going on with her husband of 40 + years, he's having another go around with cancer but he's still/always up/around.

More than once, I felt uncomfortable around You 12 pro women players/board members in my youth, with them barking at me all in good fun.

But, It would take a separation moment for me to talk to a woman that way, like Neils.

Let it go Fran, put it behind.

Personally, if it's been 15-20 yrs or more since it happened he was still very young.

Do this next time you see em, congratulate em on his HOF award (one on one conversation) then ask em why he was an ASS.
You might find that moment in time will help, and you two might become friends.

Yes, and I do appreciate your wisdom. We're all human. After the match, he found out who I was through someone who intervened and had an opportunity to approach me and make it right, or at least discuss it. He refused. I hope he has since adjusted his attitude as he matured. None of this affects his ability as a player, which earned him the right to be in the HOF which is strictly based on performance in the player category, whether a person is a gentleman or not.

As for why he was aggressive, I was told by the person who intervened that he was chatting with his future wife and was annoyed that he was being disturbed.

Would it have been so hard to post this and not your attack?

It's not an attack. It's the truth. I never questioned his performance. I was stating my only experience with him was where he did not act like a gentleman.

Taking a family call during a finals match as a fan is not appropriate. FranCrimi as WPA official has every right to request no calls during a finals match.

Players should respect the arena as a competition space not emergency phone call area. Cellphone behavior is a problem in many public and private spaces.

Unless its the Mosconi, a finals match has standards for noise. The less the better, even a whisper is discouraged.

The truth is you seem bitter, negative about so many things. I hope you can find some peace.
Thanks. No need to be worried about me.. I'm actually a pretty positive person. I guess it all comes down to the values you have. I never heard a curse word in my house growing up. Other people curse like it's just everyday talk to them. I guess I didn't expect to be cursed at like that in the stands of a World Championship by one of the participants.

I hope you can also find some peace yourself and not be so concerned with other people's experiences.

I blame that action/reaction of his, no matter what.... on his upbringing/parenting or lack of it.
We all get hard wired in life via our youth, and some times our A. Young person/character clashs with B. Our supposedly mature character.

Isn't it ironic, your situation and mine, were BOTH distilled from the spouse. 1/2 :).
And young marriages, with a pro pool player, come on Fran you know only too well the course that ride will take the other 1/2. :)
Not many Rempes/Liscottis in this 🎱 world, but it's coming.

Wow, I just got home from Virginia and it's disappointing to see how this thread, meant to celebrate a great week in Virginia and to intrigue those that might attend a major pool event one day, has proceeded.

Needless to say, Fran is right. Niels' conduct toward her on the occasion of which she takes note was regrettable and inexcusable but are we to judge the people in our lives by their worst moments or are we to consider their entire body of work? For me, it's usually the latter, and the BCA Hall of Fame would have almost no members if we judged potential inductees by their most objectionable moments of indiscretion.

In truth, Niels would probably be considered by his fellow players, the fans and the billiards media to be one of the role models for how to conduct yourself in the arena of play. I've been around Niels for about 25 years, and based on my own observations, he is very respectful of opponents, referees, fans and event producers and genuinely idolizes the pro players that paved the way for him.

Is this thread a lost cause? Do I need to begin a new thread in which we can talk about the wonderful event with which Pat Fleming graced us? Must this thread drown in a tangent having only marginal relevance? While I thought it fitting to include a recap of the BCA HOF dinner in my post, this was not a thread about Niels. Can we return to the subject at hand?

Maybe because your a nobody trying to tell a Hall of Famer how to act! Didn’t know typing on your computer during a match is not allowed lol. Oh wait it is but because you feel it’s disrespectful you actually confront him and then get butt hurt when he responds negatively. Wow maybe mind your business and this wouldn’t have happened.
