Ok, the TV rounds are in the books and Monica Webb, who looked best coming into today, backed it up for the victory.
Jeanette Lee vs Monica Webb
Helena Thornfeldt and Tracie Hines were kind enough to save me a ringside seat, so I saw the action up close and personal. We also convinced our good friend Jay Helfert to sit with us, and were pleased when he accepted. Webb played very well in this one. Two chances landed in Jeanette's lap in the first four racks, one due to a Webb scratch on the break, and the other due to a freaky scratch off a very fine shot by Webb. The first was not converted due to a very bad miss on a two ball, and the second was converted only because a missed bank "double banked" into the opposite side pocket. Webb led 3-1, and from that point on was near flawless, and the match was every bit as lopsided as the 7-1 final score would suggest.
Gerda Hofstatter vs Ga Young Kim
Sweated this one with Karen Corr and a newcomer to the WPBA that I'd never met before named Tamara Rademakers, a personable Dutch player trying to find her way onto the tour. Neither Gerda nor Ga Young was at their best in this one, and leading 5-3 and shooting at a fairly dead combo on the nine, Ga Young got very careless, scratching the cue ball the length of the table, which let Gerda back in the match, and not long after that, the match was tied at 5-5. Ga Young regrouped and prevailed 7-5, and it was clear that she'd have to step it up a notch if she'd have a realistic shot to best Webb for the title.
Monica Webb vs Ga Young Kim
Returned to my original seats, to sweat the final with Helena, Tracie and Jay, and Sarah Rousey and Debbie Schjodt joined us. It was a classic. A couple of early scratches and ineffective breaking of the balls cost Monica, and Ga Young Kim played brilliantly to jump out to a 4-1 lead. At 4-1, Monica made a ball on he break, but was snookered and jumped in the one. No reward, snookered again! No problem, she jumped the two in! Simply amazing, and she completed the almost unfathomable runout to pull within 4-2. In rack seven, Ga Young had a chance to go up 5-2 after a fine shot to pocket the two into the side, but she overcut the three and Monica ran out for 4-3, and then defended her own break for 4-4. It was a new match, and Ga Young knew it. As it turns out, Monica's final mistake was already behind her, and with magnificent play, she secured the match 7-5, and with it the title. I've attended about fifty different WPBA finals live in my life, and this was one of the very best, certainly one of the top five. It was a privilege to have witnessed such a fine match.
Conclusion
So, WPBA San Diego is in the books, and Monica Webb, who took over seven WPBA seasons to win her first title has now won two in a row, and the way she's playing, there may well be more to come. It's a great story developing, and Monica looks to have reached a completely new level in her career as a pool professional. Well played, Monica.
For me personally, I enjoyed the pool very much, but it was also a very busy event for me socially. I caught up with many old friends, and made a few new ones this weekend, and all whose paths crossed mine were friendly and courteous, which added up to a wonderful weekend here in San Diego.
Heading home for New York City tomorrow morning, with great memories of the 2009 WPBA San Diego event.
