Skill Level of BCA instructors.

Ok, I have read through this entire thread and I can see both sides of the story. I have one little thing to throw in here and I am not 100% sure if it applies.
Johnny Archer and Earl Strickland held a total of 4 pool schools in Dallas, Tx earlier this year. While signing people up for the school I found that Randy G had signed up. I was nervous of this because I didn't want a BCA Master Instructor coming to our pool school and at every turn disagreeing with the way Johnny or Earl taught. I decided to call Randy and ask "why are you tsaking this Class? are you going to disrupt the guys trying to explaing how just because they have won world championships does not mean they can teach?" Randy understood my concern and told me that NO WAY did he intend that and that he was never too old to learn something, especially from the caliber of players we are talking about.

I have never heard anything but good things about Randy, personally or as a professional Instructor. So I said to myself ok we shall see.
Randy was nothing but a gentleman the whole time and took part in the class. Once the class was over Randy hung around a little and once everyone was gone he spoke to Johnny about a couple of things he taught that day and showed him a different way to teach the same thing. Johnny came up to me after and said "Hey T-Wheels look at this" he showed me what randy had shown him and said "Man that really works, I like this way, it explains better". We know that Randy has more chance of falling pregnant than he does of beating Archer in a race to 11 but Johnny still uses the technic that Randy showed him. What does this tell you? It told me that Johnny could show Randy some of the inner workings of how a multi time world champ things in a game of pool and Randy could show a way to teach it. I believe that both parts are invaluable in their own way.

That's a deal. We both win. Set it up....SPF=randyg

Mark...No doubt about JA's skill, but don't count out Randy in that tone. He was ONE BALL from being BCA National Champion just last May. That means he CAN make a ball or two! :D

I didn't want to disrespect Randy's playing ability, HOWEVER I know where my money would be on that match. Saying that Johnny Archer has never beaten me at 10 ball FYI :)

Scott, Randy's a great teacher and an accomplished player. But what I read online indicates that Randy was runner up in the Super Senior event. Jason Kirkwood won the Open Grand Master event and Gary Abood took second. Second in the senior event is a major accomplishment (I couldn't do it, even if I were old enough), but at the same time it probably doesn't mean you're likely to have much of a chance against Archer.

Thanks Cory. I play pool for fun and teach pool full time. No day dreams about matching up against Archer in pool, just sharing ideas......SPF=randyg

Thank you! I agree. I struggled over what to do with Ida. She started late in life, but has more passion for it than almost anyone. In my opinion, her passion over-rode her inexperience and her lack of great athletic ability. She came through the program three times, worked hard, and took it all seriously. I'm proud of her.

I agree all she is doing is passing the knowledge she went and got from Tom and others
I received my knowledge from others also and guess what they received there inside info from others!
I pass along to who I want these hints (secrets)which came from the some of the best players ever!!!
The point is give her a break she states on her web page who she is and WOW tells who she is honestly!![/B]

I think her target is her beginning peers not you experts!
:grin-square:

Yes indeed!!!!! randyg

It looks like it is time for the BCA instructors program to add a standard of play to thier criteria.I don't think one must be a top player to teach others but there should be some standard.Maybe APA sl-5 or sl-6? Maybe some sort of shooting skills test would be good.

jrt30004...Yes, it is indeed sad...sad for you, because you obviously belong to the "if you can't beat me, you can't teach me" club! But that's okay...to each their own. Oh yeah...do you suppose there are some pros out there who are STILL LEARNING? There must be, because they take lessons, or go through pool school!

Hal Nix (name could be wrong) but he was an important part of Nick Varners evolution tho I heard he was not a great player. I've found over the years, the sad/negative attitude of many players is, "if I can draw my ball 36"'s and you can't then I know more than you. A compilation of many different factors create good & great players. Sometimes one instructor explaining the same concept a different way is magic.

I don't remember where we first met, but do recollect Burlington in many ways and somehow you jogged my memory and can ALMOST picture you. Courtney/Coffee ring a bell? Anyway, is there a pic of you anywhere within the confines of this forum?
Happy New years too U and Randy G.
