Skinny or Thin Cue handles - Production cues

First, best wishes for a new year to the AzB community!

I did search AzB forums and got several hits, but most were referring to Custom cues and some discussions are now dated because either the Cue maker is now famous and has a long wait list or no longer has a website. Hence starting this new discussion.

I have relatively small hands and therefore feel better to grip cues with thin handles. A point of reference is the Cuetec Gen-Tek series or the Scorpion cues. The problem is that both these cues have joints that are Cuetec specific (3/8 x 14) and nowadays there aren't as many choices in shafts for this joint as used to be before. I have OB, Mezz, SS360, Lucasi, Predator and other shafts for other joints ... for which the Cue handles are thick.

Referring to the Cuetec Gen-Tek series - the dimensions at Collar are 20mm(Legacy joint, the new AVID are I think 21.3mm), start of the grip it is 24mm and end of the grip the diameter is 28mm.

The additional butts / cues that I am looking for in other joints - Mezz United, 5/16 x 14, 3/8 x 10 and 5/8 x 16 and Uniloc.

I do intend to go, assuming COVID is not a major concern, to the Expo April next year .. and hopefully there are enough exhibitors to find what I am looking for. But meanwhile looking for those like me who prefer thin handles for their recommendations.

Cheers!
Have you tried a Schon? I have an old SL-5 I no longer use due to the fact I need a wrapless cue. I'd sell it but because of the composition of the inlays I won't mail it. If someone in Missouri wants a solid old Schon I'd sell it.

Thanks for the idea .. corollary question ... would that not impact any work on the section of the handle above the grip. Meaning, the area of the inlays or decals? I will ask around for local cue makers ... btw I am in the DMV area - DC, MD, VA.
It will not affect anything but the wrap section.
I had it done on my Lucasi no sweat.

I remember at the end of a Bert Kinister video he was hawking a line of cues that was called the widow maker that had a reverse taper for the last few inches.
Several cue makers have made “parabolic” cue handles like that. Tony at Black Boar did 10-12 years ago. They play good.

I moved here recently and believe it or not Mr Frey is very near my house. I did try to reach out to him several times ... and assumed that he is too busy with existing work. I guess I will just go to the address and knock on the door.

Thanks Bob. yes, looking for something that is plain and inexpensive ... any names of Cue makers? Even a budding or a new cue maker works for me. Another option I am thinking ... perhaps may not be feasible technically, is the change the joint itself in the existing cue? Is that possible? Or is it too invasive for the integrity of the cue at the joint. Thanks to all who have replied.
Contact Schmelke.

I had them make me a cue with a thinner butt a few years back.

I hold the butt of my cue. Why is a reverse taper good if you hold the butt?
When you hit the CB your grip tightens on butt as it’s going from thin to thick. It’s a noticeable difference. More than I wanted to deal with as I’d been playing 25ish years when I first used a parabolic cue.

I’m sure for some people it’s a great idea,

Best

I emailed Predator about the butt size of one of their models, and they emailed me back and said it was proprietary information. lol.
I read that as we're too lazy to grab some calipers, find the model and check it for you.

I bet Seyberts would grab one and give you a measurement. I called about the weight of revo shafts, the sales person I spoke to grabbed 2 or 3 and weighed them for me.

Viking has a 'skinny' option on their cues. They're around 1.20" iirc. Costs around 100bux for the option.

Yeah, that was my reaction, too. I emailed the rep back, and I asked, "So you were too lazy to call one of your dealers and ask them to measure the butt for me??!

Introducing, Viking Skinny Cues

You asked for them and here they are. Slimmer, leaner and meaner, these cues have been working out so you can work the competition. Skinny cues are available on most Viking Models as a standard or an upgrade.

The "SKINNY" Option on a Viking Cue Butt measures out about 1.205" thick and compared to the Average Standard Size of 1.295" thickness.
This may not seem like a big difference, but to the players that prefer the feeling of a smaller grip, the difference is HUGE!!!

Viking makes a skinny handle line. (Edit: I’m late to the party)

Ergonomically having your hand spread out wider (fatter butt) means for some less power delivered on the forward delivery. And many people like those ergonomics.

Just personal preference.

Black Boar uses this style of taper for their butt. Many (including me) think it's good. It's just personal preference.

take any linen wrapped butt have a cue repair or cue maker strip the linen then take the handle down to where it's thin enough for you.
Re wrap with linen and off you go.
If the handle is taken down, then re-wrapped with Irish Linen, the linen will no longer sit flush with the ends of the forearm and butt sleeve. To do the repair properly the butt would need to be cut down, re-finished, have a new wrap groove cut and then re-wrapped. That is some major work and most cue makers would charge around $300 to do so. That is if they agreed to take on the job.

I had it done to my Lucasi and you are right the linen is not flush with the handle but it doesn't bother me.
