Sky Woodward in Manila

Final score from last night's match:
Anton Raga 19 - 13 Skyler Woodward

So many super strong players that no one knows about. Pretty scary when you think about it.

i remember when rodney morris went here last year to compete in the King of Sports with other top players like ralf souquet, orcollo, biado, ignacio, corteza, chua, gabica, luat, de luna, lining, faraon, banares, etc. the final 4 were these players. View attachment 417412 2 among them i've never heard of.

There are probably fifty guys who can play Skyler even and possibly beat him. And that's a conservative estimate. A year in the Philippines and Skyler would come back a world class player. Worked out pretty good for Darren and John Morra. No better training ground anywhere!

So winning several major tournaments, and events, he isnt world class?

According to Facebook, that match was played. Skyler lost something like 21-13 (but Sky was apparently under the weather already).

Oh, wow, I was sure that Skyler could beat Anton, but I honestly do not know how good Anton Raga plays. I imagine it is not easy for any player to adjust to the table conditions in the Philippines. Also, all of the big crowds and all of the noise.

Ken, I agree. he's world class. That doesn't preclude getting even better, and he's doing that right now.

I guess it all depends on how you define "world class". If the test is whether the person is at par with the best players in the world, then I would say "not yet". If the test is lower than that, sure.

Skyler is a monster and should only get better, but IMO on a 9' table he is not quite on par with the very very best in the world.

I'd love to see Sky play Johann Chua and some of the lesser known phillipine players like Michael Feliciano, Jeffrey Deluna, etc. The players that don't ever make it on over to the U.S that we see on youtube playing Efren and giving him weight.

True.
Few years ago. Manny Pacquiao MP Cup events drew lots of unknown names out from all over Philippines . Here is a list
http://mpcupgensan.wix.com/mpcupgensan#!participants/c2t8
There are close to 100 names I have never heard of
Talent pipeline from Philippines still strong. Emerging regions like Poland, Russia , Middle East churning scores of new talent and unknown names -While most of these still play below Pinoys, they are catching up
From recent C8B event, UK and China have lots of 8 ball talent . Most of them I have never heard of.
There are probably few hundreds in world who play at Sky's level or better.
The pool universe isn't big money like tennis or soccer where the top talent are scouted and snatched up
:D

IMHO, Sky is 2nd tier world class not elite 1st tier
I like the kid but he has not won major tourneys yet. Majors (in 8B,9B,10B) would be W9B, W10B, W8B, US Open, China Open, All Japan, DCC 9B
He does not have to win major tourney to be top tier. Players with few top finishes like last 8 finish in the Worlds W9B, W10B, W8B and last 4 finish in other majors are potential members to join the elite 1st tier club
Example of player who has not won major but is 1st tier- Carlo Biado

Perhaps. The underlying theme in most posts about his talent also seemingly unconsciously mention that's he just a kid, that's the key.

He is just a kid yet & he's in a great place right now to get more seasoned than he currently is. He's going to be just fine.

I highly doubt that 50 is a pretty big number

Let's see, there have been at least 30 or 40 come here in the last twenty years that all played great. There are at least double that number of top players who can't get a visa to come here. Conditions are very different there and the local players have a big advantage. There are probably a thousand or more good players hustling pool for a living in the Philippines. I'm not saying 50 guys are better than Skyler, just that they are good enough to beat him in a money game. I was a little conservative in my estimate out of respect for Skyler. I've been all over the Philippines and seen very good players everywhere.

When Manny had his first tournament in General Santos City, a couple of hundred of the top hustlers showed up. They came from all over the Philippines to take a crack at the 40K on top. The PI is no small place with a population over 100 million. It's 20 times larger than Hawaii! A little larger than New Zealand and a little smaller than Japan. Slightly larger in area than Nevada just to give you some perspective.

Lol, are all of the pool rooms there (in Manila) really that noisy on the inside (coming from noise from the outside)? I assume that is what you are talking about.

Noise coming in from the outside lol. The pool halls ARE OUTSIDE!!!!

I agree. I lived in the PI for three years and there were tons of pool players. Most of the local playing conditions sucked, but they were used to them. Crappy tables, no A/C or the pool tables were outdoors in 95 degree heat with 95% humidity, roosters crowing, jeepneys and trikes honking, etc, etc.

If you could fade all that and still run racks, you could hang with Skyler.

Just watch the 5 table stream at Star Billiard Center in Manila when hey hold tournaments. You will see at least 20 no names playing that can give Dennis a problem. They are all great money players too. Why/ because they never play for fun-fun. Johnnyt

John Moore Had no chance against Skyler BFORE the trip.

Are you an honorary Pinoy or something like that? You point out THREE valid points. VISA's are hard to come by for the average Pinoy, they might not like the locale job opportunities...and don't drink the water.
