in the market for a break cue.. wondering if anyone has played with these break cues and how they felt about them.. comments welcome, and thank you.

Sledgehammer vs. Stinger
The Sledgehammer hits a lot stronger than the stinger, you get what you pay for with that one. A very sturdy cue with a shaft that's a bit thicker with a conical taper.

For a little extra, you could contact Jerry Powers and have an origional Stinger made for you. He may even have one ready to go.
McDermott has a deal with Jerry to build and market his technology, so they must believe in it strongly in order to endorse, manufacture, and market the product.
The nice thing is Jerry can customize a Stinger for you, providing a custom that will hold it's value well.
Nothing wrong with the McD at all, but it might be worth looking toward the inventor.

I have a Jerico Stinger. I was okay with the way it broke, although it broke a 9-ball rack W-A-A-Y better than it did an 8-ball rack. It was satisfactory as a jump cue, though if your wallet can afford both a jump cue AND a break cue, you could probably improve on both qualities of the Stinger.
That said, come to find out after a year (or so) of breaking with the Stinger, I found out that the ferrule was loose. It began sliding up the tenon after each break. I contacted Jerry Powers and sent it in for repair. The turnaround (from my possession back to my possession) was about a week.
When I got the cue back it broke a LOT better than it ever had (even an 8-ball rack). Now, I'm completely satisfied with my Stinger as both a breaker and a jumper.
You could spend more money and buy one of each a dedicated break cue and a jump cue and probably get better performance out of them as individual cues, but for a good dual-purpose cue, it's hard to beat the Stinger!!!

Well, i have played both and like the Sledgehammer best!
There are numerous versions made through out the years so pick wisely! My personal preference is for the original ones! Those are black and wrapless made out of phenolic with a maple core.
The originals were SO popular that predator BK1 and BK2 knocked his design off and made an almost identical product! Just recently Tiger made the ICEBREAKER the same way and made one modification adopting the lomax 2 piece jump cue section design.
MG orange crush is a return to his old design! Just orange colored phenolic nothing new!
I prefer a hard leather tip for added control. The tip can always be changed and experimented with to find what you like. I would select one BUILT this way with phenolic and chose between the three mentioned on the basis of tip preference, warranty, visual preference & etc.

I would vote for one of Mike's original Sledgehammers, based on experience.
That said, that OCrusher is friggin cheap and probably a result of Mike's continued...innovative efforts.

You need to try them both! If I had listened to "everyone" at the time, I'd have a BK2 and would NOT be happy. I went to a billiard store and tried out about 10 break cues, spent a few hours actually, but the Stinger yielded the best results...FOR ME. That doesn't mean it's the best one for you. Try them out and pick the best one that "fits" you.

nothing to add here, exactly my experience. I didn't try any Stingers, so can't compare.
nothing phenolic there eally except the ferrule probably. MG OrangeCrusher carries Samsara tip.
I think you miss-understood! The phenolic part i speak about is the entire body of the cue's BUTT SECTION!!!!
Mike made some fancy sledgehammers which were for looks more than performance. He added wraps, exotic woods and other beauty items that were not functional. (In my opinion) The original ones where basic builds!
I loved the BALANCE of the original because he nailed the weight and balance aspect! By using the Phenolic cored with maple he was able to evenly balance the weight in the butt section! The wood selection and materials selected are important because certain woods weight more and some weight less and may not be suitable for your purposes given strength and weight NEEDS!!!!!
