Why does slow play ill effect my shooting ? I understand the value of patience, yet when playing an opponent that seems to deliberate every move it takes me out of my comfort zone. Does it bother anybody else ? What to do ?

Sometimes it's by design. Changing your rhythm can often effect the other person. Kid Delicious is a master at this.

It seems to effect people that have a fast and loose style of play the most. It used to bother me allot but becoming more patient at the table has helped me with deal with excessively slow players.

It used to bother me a lot more. Now it only bothers me when it is really slow. I would also like to know some ideas on how to handle this. I think at the end of the day you just have to live with it.

Slow play hasn't bothered me in the past, but lately it's been getting on my nerves.
I used to just sit back and think that they can take as long as they want, because I'm going to win anyway.
Now it's making me a nervous wreck.

"Just shoot the ****ing ball"

I look at it like this, I had to change the way I felt about it since I couldn't really control the way others played. Learning to be more patient helped me allot. I'm not saying you're impatient, it's just what helped me. I was getting frustrated when people took 2 minutes on a simple shot.

Now I just use that time in the chair to contemplate my next move instead of filling my head with negative thoughts about my opponents lack of speed. Otherwise I just get pissed and blow my next shot which is what some people are hoping for in the 1st place.

It bothers more people than will admit...find a slow player that just plays for fun....play w/that person alot. It's the only way.. Plus go to kmart...get the pair of sony headphones that ar 10-14.00 . The kind that are attatched together, plus a little mp3, before you know it, it will not bother , but humor you.. Trust me.

If they are really taking too long I have no problem complaining to them about it until either they move their ass or there's a confrontation. Yes there's shots that take much deliberation but my patience ends at the 30-40 second mark for routine business. Pool should be fun. If I'm not having fun because they can't make a simple decision then they aren't going to have fun either. You can become a major ***** without letting it affect you if you keep your mind right. After all that's what they're doing to you and pool is a "game".

The major flaw in your reasoning here is that they are often not doing anything *intentional* to bother you. They just really are slow. If you "become a major *****" on purpose, you have definitely sunk a level below them. An eye for an eye went out of style about 2000 years ago. Also, I'm sure you wait until in between racks, or at least when it is your turn at the table to start whining?

The sooner a 15 sec stop clock is introduced at all levels of the game, the better. I've just watched Power Snooker, which has a 20 second time limit. If snooker can have a stop clock, pool is insane for not having one.

Slow play is the death of pool. Threads which go on about PSR, or excessively about shape, or stance, or approach, or all the other things people that can't play drone on about, make me think 'that's yet another nail in the coffin of the once fun game pool'. Too many people attempt to win by strangling the joy out of the game, and it has to stop.

You do realize that all pro's have a PSR to some degree don't you? Paying attention to your fundamentals and having a PSR has nothing to do with slow or fast play. Lou Butera had a PSR and is one of the fastest players around. It would do you some good to give a little more thought to what you are saying.

Now if someone is taking a excessive amount of time with their stance, approach and psr that is a different story but you have made this comment a few times and I just don't understand it. Talk to anyone who has played against me. I tend to be a fast player and yet I still do all the things you say slows the game. You make it sound like anything short of running up to the table and shooting a waste of time/effort.

I have tried seeing things from your perspective and if I'm misunderstanding you I apologize but it really seems like you are the one that just doesn't get it.

onnormally mind a deliberaye player who is moderately slow but i have one player in a league i play in where our 8 ball matches would take over 2 hours and it would drive me nuts so i started taking 1 ball off the table on my first shot then playing a lockup safe one after another till i got ball in hand or got all my problem balls moved then would run out now he ducks me so it all works out.

Why don't any of the slow players get on here and post their reasoning for slow play?
In fact, if there are any slow players out there, I would like to know one thing>>>
What the **** are you thinking about when you take 1-2 minutes,
(sometimes longer or shorter) to shoot one ****ing shot?

Threads, dear boy. Threads. The 12 page bore-athons about fundamentals. You must know the ones, 'take your time, get your head right, chalk your cue, decide your shape, think about settling into the shot, address the cue ball 82 times, clear your mind, keep your arm straight, zzzzzzzzzzzz' - the subtext is, if you slow down enough, your opponent will lose the will to live and you can beat them.

So much advice and so few world champions!

plain and simple excessive slow play is lame, i can't control what people do but i can control the way i act twoards it

Back in NY we had a guy we called "Cobweb" because he was so slow. I honestly don't think it was a shark technique, just the way he played. It was aggravating but we learned to ignore it. You just can't let it get to you. Easier said than done sometimes, I know.

Yeah...we used to have a guy here locally in league that did it on purpose...like 5 minutes per shot! I finally called a foul on him for exceeding the 90 sec shot clock rule....at which point he advanced on me and threatened to beat my ass. My players got in-between...but it was a messed up match.

He is now doing time in prison for someone else saying something to him while he was playing....at which point he pulled a sock off, put the CB in it, and damn near beat the guy to death. Nutballs all over.

'Cobweb' is pretty funny....I just call them 'speedbumps'.
