Sold My Harley-Davidson, So......

There's no good reason for having a custom cue made these days. State-of-the-art production butts and shafts abound.

There is one good reason.

If you want to have a custom made, then have one made. It is reason enough and quite good enough reason IMHO.

After nearly a decade absence from pool I was in need of a cue I liked. Being no stranger to custom cues as my last real player was a SouthWest, I started a quest for my next player.

I decided that I was going to try a few different sneakys to get a handle on what I might like. Maybe this would be a good strategy for you. However this hasn't worked out so well with me because I ended up ordering a custom cue after speaking with a cue maker about a sneaky. I now have 2 sneakys, another one being made and the custom on the way.I have a feeling I'm going to like all of them.

I believe it's impossible to have a cue built and expect it to be your ultimate everything no matter who you have do it.

The whole thing is just way too subjective. To think you can direct the building of a custom cue and have it turn out as your personal dream shooter is a fool's errand.

If however you pay enough for it, you will convince yourself it's perfect out of pride.

Even if it's suitable only for kindling.

I have seen plenty of cues folks designed themselves, had a cue maker build for them that if they tried giving it to me I would get a restraining order and press charges if they persisted.

By all means don't buy a gorgeous one of one custom cue that's already built and you can touch and hit a ball with. If you go that route you may not be top dog in your APA league bragging department. Plus what would you do with all the extra money you had and the year or two of your life not spent waiting?

But on the other hand, you may actually find your ultimate cue.

OK, LOOK, CUT THE STUPID CRAP. I AM AFTER SOME SERIOUS REPLIES ONLY HERE. IF YOU ARE TRYING TO BE FUNNY OR STUPID JUST PLEASE STOP. AND IF YOU CAN OFFER SOME SERIOUS INFO PLEASE POST.

OK, Serious info here... from me... for a change.

Go to the Super Billiards Expo. Most cuemakers are there. You can look at and hit with pretty much anything there. Plus you can buy something premade, ready to go, or you can talk face to face with the cuemakers there.

Im not gonna be the guy to throw out a favorite cuemakers name. For a venture like this you need to decide the majority of this on your own. What YOU want in you cue and who YOU want to make it and how YOU want it to look.

Youre going to drop a considerable amount of money on a cue, you are going to want it to be everything YOU want it to be.

Why do you do that? It is a public forum and as I have responded to you in the past, like anything with a lot of participants, you are gonna get responses from serious to funnyy, helpful to annoying...and everything in between. You can't control that.

But to the topic: you must look inside, asshopper. The perfect cue is already known to you.

What was your favorite cue ever? Get that one duplicated, in terms of weight/ balance/ taper...maybe changing the look.

IMO, looks without function is worthless, for a cue. I'd rather have a nicely framed picture or a cool chair than a cue I couldn't play with.

And congrats on outliving that motorcycle too. That is an accomplishment.

Good advice. While all cuemakers make cues that appear to some players, relying on forum advice to decide which cue best suits your tastes is risky. My experience is that cuemakers tend to build cues that play similarly. Once you find a short list of cuemakers who typically build cues that you would want for your #1 player, you can decide on style, timing, cost, etc. There is no better place to start than SBE.

Call me crazy but if you are in search of a playing cue you might want to play with it before you buy it.

How to win friends and influence people 101, lol.

AWESOME book! I did some DC training early on and it has been absolutely invaluable. Doubtful he's gonna have any idear what we ate talking about though lol. Oh well.

Hence my derogatory responses to each and every one of these cue threads he starts. I simply don't understand how anyone can be bothered giving this guy any advice.

In the beginning I would do lots of research regarding his queries of the day, and really try to help him out.

I seriously think he just likes the attention that these never ending threads give him.

Greenie to you, sir!

If I wanted a high end playing cue, I'd probably pick up a southwest. Tasc, tucker, sugartree, tad, barnhart, and a bunch of others make fine cues. I'd try to play with as many as possible before buying one.

Without knowing what kind of cue you like to play with it is next to impossible to recommend one.

Buying new it comes down to price range, and what you want more than anything. One of the best customer service guys is Bob Dzuricky, dzcues.com. He delivers on time, and communicates exceptionally well. Think he may be one of the most under rated makers out there.

Been There.....Done That......Learned a Lot In The Process

In the last 3 years, I have had four (4) custom cues made and I basically designed these cues.
Two cues were made by Bob Owen and two cues were made by Jerry Rauenzahn.

The first custom I had made by Bob, much to my dismay, was over-designed and I caused it to happen.
The first custom that Jerry made for me was a big improvement over the pool cue I designed with Bob.

There's a subtle message embedded in the above where I never expressed excitement or passion.
Now ask me about the last two customs I only received last month from Bob & Jerry......"NIRVANA'.
The designs turned out magnificent, play tremendous & I'm absolutely "delighted" with both of my cues.

Take your time deciding on the design you want made....then figure out how long you are willing to wait
and how much you are prepared to spend and lastly, cue-maker reputation for reliability. Tackle the cue
question in that order and you will not be disappointed.

Simply decide upon what you want for a design. If ivory is involved, realize that some cue-makers are legally prohibited from using it.
Case in point, in 5 days any cue shipped by Ernie Guiterrez or any other California cue-maker is against the law. California cue-maker
customers are screwed royally because any cue in their shop with any ivory as of July 1, 2016 can never be sold, even at an
out of state cue-show. A CA cue-maker has to relocate outside of CA's boundaries & operate with an out of state business license.

None of that may matter if you aren't interested in ivory or if you were, a California cue-maker wasn't being considered. Once you
have the design, then decide how long you are willing to wait since some cue-makers you might want to consider have what seems like
ridiculous time frames to me. When you narrow the list of cue-makers down, come up with the max price for the cue you'd pay & that might
eliminate some cue-makers on your list. Once you've whittled the list down to likely candidates, select the cue-maker with the best record
for satisfaction, quality & reliability.I am not suggesting any names to consider nor am I knocking any cue-makers.

It's really important to venture forth with eyes wide open because nowadays more than ever before, "Caveat Emptor."

I hear that Simonis has their own line of cues out now, you should call them and ask what colors they come in and what butt diameters they have.

How about buying a great Pool Table. Then you can play & practice any & all the time.

That will do more good than a cue.
