Soliciting color recommendations for a garage to game room conversion

Hey all,

Some of you may know that I am currently in the process of converting my garage to a game room. For those of you who may have some experience in interior design, I was hoping you'd have some recommendations on the color scheme.

I am looking for a dark color scheme, as I am not really planning on entertaining a lot of people, the game room will be mostly for practicing on my Diamond table.

I want to preserve the dark "feel" of most public pool rooms you'll encounter. I was thinking a dark green for the walls. At this point, I have no idea what color carpet to get. I know I don't want dark red on either the walls or the carpet, as I think it would be visually distracting to me personally.

I was thinking of breaking up the wall color with something like this:

(See the wood shelf/accents on the right picture)

I thought this may work for me, but with a darker wood stain.

Again, I am open to suggestion. I guess I mainly need help on the carpet. My wife has to make a decision on the carpet within the next week, as the concrete is being laid down in the garage this weekend.

Thanks for any suggestions you may have. I can't connect to most picture hosting sites from Iraq, so if you have example photos, please upload them to the forum.

Thanks again,

Russ

I agree, I never understood why some people prefer a matching cloth, wall and or carpet color scheme. I personally like the colors to contrast (ex. simonis tour blue and a reddish brown (brick color) wall). I've noticed at some local rooms also have a lighter color above the chair rail and a darker color below. Looking down the table, the cloth and darker wall section seems to give a good contrast. Have you thought about painting the ceiling as well? Depending on your ceiling height, a darker ceiling might also help keep the focus on the table.

Your choice of lighting will have a great impact on the feel of the room. Are you going with recessed lighting? Being able to control the lights with a series of dimmers might help achieve the pool hall mood as well.

As far as the carpeting, I'm not sure, as long as it looks good with the walls????

Check out http://www.brunswickbilliards.com/ they have some sample room photos of their tables.

Good Luck, can't wait to see the finals pics.

p.s. are you going to set up a smoking patio outside?:D (sorry Russ, bad joke)

Go with cool calming colors such as light greens and blues and off whites. Stay away from bright whites, reds, yellows, etc.... they have a negative effect on the mind for concentrating (too startling).
I personally like a wood panel wanescoat (you can paint it for color or leave wood tone/stained wood color) with a chair/drink rail around the walls. And a nice calm not really noticable print wallpaper above the wanescoat. Then decorate with pool memorabilia.... :D

You want it to be dark, not depressing. A Dark Goldish Tan for the walls goes good with dark woodwork, and looks good with green cloth. You can add spots of color for contrast if desired. (Greens, Reds, or Oranges)

Russ,

I wanted my room, in the basement, to be as bright as possible. So the walls and ceiling are a light beige. The carpet, closed loop industrial with pad, is a 7 ball color with bits of blue and beige. The walls are paneled to about 4'. The counter tops are six ball colored with a marbled effect. The curtains are a plaid that has 6 ball and 7 ball colors. My cabinets are a natural stain but I'm thinking with painting them. I've dedicated each wall to a theme, golf, pool, racing. It's fun to do the planning.

Here's a link to some pics.

Does the table have green cloth? The table's got to have green cloth. REAL pool tables have green cloth :D :D :D That's my obligatory rant.

I llike the paneled wainscoating idea using real wood. I like the shelf around the room just above table height. Diamond light or custom. (I have a custom designed after the Diamond.. nice) What color is the table? Recessed ceiling lights are nice.. dimmer switch of course. High tables and chairs, I like oak w/a design on the seat. Photos of old players and old rooms.. nothing flashy. Nothing flashy anywhere... conservative pool room.. old pool room. A corner for working on cues with folding walls or a curtain to keep dust down. Just enough space to be able to install tips and clean/polish shafts, rewrap. A closet for "stuff".

I think what I've decided to do is go with a dark green on the wall, (sorry, all.. I couldn't deal with a light color on the wall..) and a dark gray padded carpet, and a different color carpet attached to the walls from the floor to table height. That carpet will be bordered by wood moulding strips stained the color of my Diamond Pro/Am.

The wife is going to do her best to get the contractors to do the concrete and carpet work in the next 10 days.. And guess who is going to be installing the table?

You guessed it, our very own realkingcobra, aka "Glen". He's going to be on my side of the country for a few weeks, and I figured it would be a good opportunity to get everything done the way I want it done.

At the same time as all theis game room stuff is going on, I am upgrading my A/C unit from a 2.5 ton system to a 4 ton system. Hopefully my electricity bills will drop somewhat from the current $400.00 monthly bill.

I vote for pale yellow- goes nicely with all colors, easy on the eyes and is positively absorbed by vision, like sunlight.

You better start a poll with all colors you can thinko of, then take the winner and do another polll re: varying shades!

Russ... I like the idea of the dark gray carpet... good choice... that way your wife won't notice my cigar ashes that didn't quite make it into the ash tray.
