I've heard a plethora of different people called a 'nit' and can't find a common denominator for what a nit actually is.

Here's a pretty good definition:

Nit Definition

A nit is a billiard player or gambler who wants too great a handicap or refuses to bet or wager any cash on relatively evenly matched or fair billiard games. Nit is a derogatory term used commonly in pool rooms.

The common use is to describe people who won't gamble unless they are a lock, or people who talk like they'll gamble, but won't bet. It's just really name calling concerning someone who has no gamble.

From what I've seen in pool rooms, the biggest nits are the ones who use the word most frequently.

A nit is someone like Mike Dechaine haha. Once his resident Cock suckers report back to him that I said that he'll be all in my messages asking me to delete this. Nah for real he's a nit cause he won't bet on himself playing SVB on a freeroll. For that matter anyone who won't bet on them self whIle on a free roll is a nit. That's my permanent stance on that. Carry on!

Someone who has probably never cleared $20 an hour at any job, but see you practicing something and tells you for $30 an hour he will teach you.

Here's a pretty good nit story.

A decent local player who had beat me twice in tournaments asked me to gamble. I said "OK, how much?" he said $40 race to 7. First of all, we're both grown men, so when he said $40 instead of $50, I figured he was nervous about losing, or only had $80 he was willing to lose. Either way I felt it was an odd number. (Typically at the time I was playing for $50 to $100 sets or $10 or $20 a game - those were my usual wagers.)

Anyway, I said OK and beat him 7-4. He flipped again and this time I beat him 7 - 1. I was playing decent but really it was because he couldn't make a ball. He quit and paid me, we shook hands.

Later on he told a friend of mine he quit because he knew I was a nit. LOL. All I did was say OK and ran through him.

I couldn't find anyone that would bet on him in that match either. Anyone. They're all nits!

Mike, I will put you in the box against Shane for 10k, but only if you'll bet with Tate on yourself against Shane. Tate likes to bet 50k minimum.

It's a freeroll with side action.

Often what gamblers call nitty is what any other human would call prudent behavior.

- Up in a game and have to work in three hours so you stop playing? Nit
- Got the worst of a game, break even and quit? Nit
- Win a tough game and decide to take your profit? Nit
- Have $2000 to your name and don't want to bet it all? Nit

But when people who like to call people on being nitty decide to nit up it is just being a smart gambler not really a nit.

Everyone is nitty in some way. If they are not they are a complete moron.

From what I've read on these forums a "nit" is someone that won't end his days in a shitty motel without a dime to his name. Seriously, a lot of behavior that people on here call "nitty" is just common sense. For instance if you are a C-player, refusing a big money game against an A+ player is usually the smart thing to do. He probably won't give you the kind of handicap you'd need to win, which would sound ridiculous. People are very bad at calculating the odds of winning. For someone who's able to run 3-5 balls (for instance) they are extremely low against a high level player, and in fact that kind of player almost always win these kinds of bets. The real weight that needs to be given sounds exceessive and anyone who demands them will be called a nit.

I think the word nit is more like a strategy used by gamblers to bully players into playing, more than an apt description of a persons character in about 99% of the cases. There is a clear tendency of the term to be used on weaker players, when in fact it would be more aptly applied to the high level ones. They are the ones with the experience to calculate the odds, yet they rarely give anybody a fair game. A nit, to them, is someone who refuses to pay for the privilege of playing them, by agreeing to play without adequate weight. They will toss the term around liberally, yet when you look at their winning percentages and the ratio of games won and lost, it gets pretty clear who the real nits are... I lost plenty of such games in the beginning when I was learning pool, but unlike a lot of people I knew what was actually taking place, and never got tricked into doubling the bet etc.

A nit to me is someone who is unwilling to bet any serious amount of money in a situation
where he/she has little or no (percieved) edge and/or someone who is unwilling to bet as
much as the other party wants him/her to bet.

I am quite nitty myself.

Saw a NIT this morning. I happen to glance as I walked past the bathroom mirror! LOL

There are lots of different kinds of nits. The most common one is the "pool detective" or "action killer" who considers himself "in the know" about any action going on in the poolroom because he is constantly getting into everyone's business but wouldn't bet water is wet. Every poolroom has one.
