Sopcast- Have Trojans Now?

Sopcast is the only thing I have intentionally downloaded- couple of days ago- and now I get my McAfee window popping up every couple of seconds:mad: :mad:

Trojan Found
The file c:\windows\system32\sulimo.dat was infected by the generic.dx trojan.

I am unble to clean, quarantine or delete. WTF?!

Anybody else have same situation?
Anybody have help to offer?
 
I'm running full Norton suite. No probs here. Thanks for the heads up though. I don't think it's Sopcast.
 
i got some last weekend, not necessarily a big issue tho. i ran ad-aware after every session and it whopped it clean.

load up avg (put it to auto downlad updates) runs like a firewall, then load up ad-aware (run every week or so - boot comp after a run).

mcafee is no good, imo.

I downloaded both versions of Sopcast with no problems.

Lately there have been a lot of e-mails with trojans. They direct you to a web site and that's all it takes. I had a couple that my McAfee anti virus stopped. One was an e-mail directing me to a web site to track a package. I knew it was a fake but I wanted to see what the scam was. The web site was registered to a Romanian scammer.

The web sites that teen agers and young adults regularly visit are so infested with viruses and spyware, malware from pop-ups, it's almost a plague. Your anti virus should have caught it if your definitions have been updated.

trojans

i run nortons and it has the live updates for the yearly fee. i stopped like 4 or 5 trojans from the sopcast be carefull

My sopcast version 2.0.1, running symantec, so far I got no problems at all..
 
Although I didnt catch anything....

Saying that "if your virus software is up to date, you won't catch anything" is a completely false statement... I am no computer genious, but I do have a degree in Network Security... And I promise you that no anti-virus software can keep up with the thousands of new viruses that are created everyday....

keeping your virus program up to date is a very good idea, and running ad-aware or similar program is also a good idea... but no company can give you protection from viruses that they do not know exist...
 
I've found in my many years of computer tinkering that no single program will get everything. I usually run 2 virus program checks/day and also 2 different ad software at least once a week. One program will always catch something the other missed. I also use a script blocker so I only let in scripts that are absolutely necessary and that I trust. Seems like a bit of work, but if you set these programs to run while you are asleep or away then its never really a hassle.
 
Thanks for the input, folks. I fouund the instructions to remove the item, but it sounds like a real PITA.
 
I use Trend Micro's PC-Cillin software (~$100 for the top-end package & 3 years of service) with Ad-Aware (free) as a second line of defense. Both packages are as good as you can get for personal use.

PC-Cillin replaced the (pathetic) Norton suite that came on our machine when we bought it. We had nothing but problems with Norton "defending" us. It seemed like every day I had to deal with something new. Those days are gone now...I haven't had a SINGLE issue since using PC-Cillin.

There' s just way too many trojans, viruses, spyware these days and there's not much you can do to stop it 100%. But here's what I do...

There is a piece of software called "VMWare Workstation" that splits your PC into multiple virtual machines. I set up a second virtual machine with Windows XP. I install all the unknown software (like SopCast) on that fake PC. It runs just fine. Should that virtual machine get a virus, who cares? It only affects the virtual world, and there isn't anything in there of value. And, should I choose to, it's very easy to reinstall that virtual machine's Windows XP.

Anyone who has the technical know-how to install Windows in the first place can figure out VMWare.
1) Installl and run VMWare
2) Click on "Create a new virtual Machine -- Windows XP type"
3) Decide how big a virtual hard disk you want to give it (20GB is fine)
3) Install Windows XP in that virtual PC, and use it
4) That second instance of Windows XP can run in a window or in full screen mode

Then, you can install any software or browse any website, open any e-mail attachment, with confidence.
 
It could have been a false positive. I was reading in the Sopcast FAQ's, where they said that Sopcast opens up the same port that some viruses do, so some anti-virus programs were showing a false positive. Well, of course they are going to say that, LOL, but maybe it's true. If your virus definitions weren't up to date, you could try updating them and then scanning again.
