Sounds of a cue tip

I like a nice thud to my cue. But I have a McDermott that on some shots, not all, there is more of a high pitch ting or crack. The ferrule looks fine. I had a cue shop look at the weight bolt and make sure it was tight. They thought it might have something to do with the hardness of the tip.

What sounds would be considered normal from a cue? It is normal to get a different sound for different shots? I currently have 2 cues that exhibit this behavior.

Regards

On the shots that make the different noise, are you approaching the miscue limit? I've had people tell me my cue doesn't sound right when I shot extremely low on the cue ball, not quite a miscue but the contact spot on the tip showed that I was very close to doing so.

I recently changed from one layerd hard tip that gave a thud-like sound to another (different) hard layered tip that gives a crack-like sound (a sound like a phenolic tip--even thou it is leather.)

I'd say it normally happens on pretty extreme draw.

I suppose that as long as it's not resulting in miscues or other playing issues, I should ignore it. Sounds like it happens.

My cue does that on extreme draw shots. Sounds like a miscue, but it doesn't miscue. I've hit table length draw shots and had my opponent ask me if I miscued. I just ask if it looked like I miscued.

I just replaced a Moori Quick with a Le Pro,now I get a thud sound.I like the sound but the Moori tip was much better.
I know replacing the Moori with a Le Pro does not sound smart, but hey I sold a Schon in the 80s because I wanted a Meucci. So two dumb pool moves in 25 or so years isn't so bad.

Tips can change the sound alot. I had a Sugartree with Eric Crip's self made tips called sugartips that sounded like glass breaking when you hit the ball and actually played good. I changed to a sniper and a water buffalo and the sound was much quieter. Iv'e had cues over the years with very hard tips that had a loud ping sound. The harder the stroke the louder the sound will be. Not saying that is your problem but tips do have different sounds and some are much louder(especially some of the hard ones).

it's either

a loose ferrule

a delaminated tip

a tip coming unglued in the middle

more commonly the first two though, this is of course if the sound is coming from that area.

This happens to me with any firm, extreme spin and always has. People look at me like I shattered my ferrule on big draw shots (which I have before!?!?)... don't know what causes the sound... but I wouldn't worry about it unless it gets worse. This problem is much more pronounced on my 11mm shaft than my standard shafts, regardless of what tips are used.

So what you are saying is that the sound for sure is because of one of these issues. And even though it might not effect play, it is because of some defect or poor workmanship? Even if it doesn't effect play, I might go in and have the ferrule looked at, flattened, reglued, etc. But only if for sure, the sound is due to one of these issues and isn't just something that happens based on a variety of factors that you may or may not be able to change.

Thanks for all the info (everyone).

sound of a cue tip

I had a d series Mcdermott that had the same noise that sound like what you are describing, changed ferrule tip with no change in sound. Checked
weight bolt it was tight. So I took out weight bolt, and that made it sound
like I think it should. no high pitch ping, just a medium thug. A very desirable sound and feel with great feed back. Take care, john

Glue not evenly applied may cause a tinking sound as well.

Agreed! I've bought several cues that the owners claimed didn't hit well and they had a very noticeable "tink or ping".........most of them had a air pocket under the tip when it was glued on. It's amazing that a small amount of air can make such a terrible noise!

another thing you can do is swap your shaft out for another one to see if the condition still exists. this would help determine as to whether the issue is with the butt as some other people have mentioned here (ie. weight bolt for example), and do the same with your shaft and a different butt. i'm sure that you should know someone with a mcdermott.

the combinations of tip, ferrule, shaft, butt, etc. will make different sounds. it's hard to say from reading a post whether the sound is just the normal sound of the tip or the sound of something wrong (loose part, air pocket, etc.) some cues will make a ping or tink sound, which some people like and some hate. take it to an experienced cue man and he will be able to tell you if the sound is due to something faulty or if it is just how that tip sounds on that cue.
