Here's a question that has always bothered me-
Your opponent places you in a "Hooked" position. Rather than trying to "shoot out", you pick up the cue ball and hand it to your opponent.

Money games, Tournaments, play-for-fun.
Is there a rule against this? Is it really "sporty"? Is it just a smart move?

This is a rare occurance for me. Normally if I am locked up, I look to tie up a couple of balls to make their run out harder.

I only pick up and hand them the CB is there are a few balls tied up that are hard to break out and by my trying to hit my OB, I may break up a cluster.

Just a smart move, sometimes the last thing you want to do is try the kick and open up balls that are tied up plus give him ball in hand.

It's exactly the same as missing the kick shot entirely.

Many times people do this and miss a better shot which is to move another ball into a bad spot.

The way I see it is you do what it takes to give yourself the best chance of getting another turn at the table.
 
Picking up the QB like that should be loss of game. One of the seasons you lock him/her up like that is hoping they will open up the table trying to get out of the safe. If someone handed me the QB in a money game they might be eating it. Johnnyt

You have to be careful with this type of attitude and comments. Your opponent could just be waiting for you to make a fuss out of the situation, and he could make you eat the ball.....

Well, unless the cue ball is frozen to the rail, and also frozen to multiple object balls, it seems that it would be easy enough to stroke (lightly) into any foul without having to just pick it up.....

World Rules state otherwise....SPF=randyg
 
I do that all the time. Rather than disturb clusters or risk putting a ball near the 9-ball I hand the ball to my opponent or touch the cb in some way. I think it is smart, why make it easier on your opponent-he probably was going to get bih anyway why bust up a mess for him?

Did anyone notice the foul at 4:29 on the video?


As he is placing the cue ball for the jump shot, he touches the ferrule of his cue to the ball to position it. Didn't he just commit his third consecutive foul?

Great clip. Nice moves, and a great escape at the end. Not sure about the foul at 4:39 or whatever the guy asked about. Most rules are you can position with the ferrel, not the tip I believe.

3.21 FOULS BY TOUCHING BALLS
It is a foul to strike, touch or in any way make contact with the cue ball in play or any object balls in play with anything (the body, clothing, chalk, me- mechanical bridge, cue shaft, etc.) except the cue tip (while attached to the cue shaft), which may contact the cue ball in the execution of a legal shot. Whenever a referee is presiding over a match, any object ball moved during a standard foul must be returned as closely as possible to its original position as judged by the referee, and the incoming player does not have the option of restoration

The cue ball in play shall not be intentionally struck with anything other than a cue?s attached tip (such as the ferrule, shaft, etc.). While such contact is automatically a foul under the provisions of Rule 3.19, if the referee deems the contact to be intentional, he shall warn the player once during a match that a second violation during that match will result in the loss of the match by forfeiture. If a second violation does occur, the match must be forfeited.

Okay, upon further checking, I found this



3.40 CUE BALL IN HAND FOUL
During cue ball in hand placement, the player may use his hand or any part of his cue (including the tip) to position the cue ball. When placing the cue ball in position, any forward stroke motion of the cue stick contacting the cue ball will be considered a foul if not a legal shot


I think this may be a new clarification. I seem to remember having to give up ball in hand in the past due to placing the cue ball in this manner. As a result, I have learned to only use my hand to place or to alter the placement of the cue ball

Anybody else know if this is a new clarification, or was I misinformed?

Playing a strong player its not going to matter much weather you kick and miss or hand them the ball. Making a problem to solve is the best bet..

Playing a weaker player picking up the ball and handing it to them can be the best move(right after they play safe) it causes doubt and confuses them. They think they did somthing right, then you just walk over like no big deal pick up the ball and say "here ya go". I love to watch their wheels spin...
