Squatting The Rock

Or the last ball rolling finds a way to get between the cueball and the lowest number ball.

Love it when that happens.

I hate when I park the cue ball in the middle of the table on the break and don't make a ball. I usually break the balls quite well (as far as spread is concerned and without clusters), but if I don't make a ball it is WIDE OPEN for my opponent.

You need the pool and luck gods to be on your side when you break the balls because it usually is a crap shoot.

I can't count the number of times I've parked the cue ball PERFECTLY and then a ball from Hell comes flying around and knocks the cue ball in a pocket or somewhere behind another ball.

Steve was always capable of putting "packages" together

Watch Mizerak play 9 ball...that man had the most accurate control of whitey on the break of anyone you can name.

That's for sure, Steve was always capable of putting "packages" together when his break was working......he parked it as well as anyone I've ever seen.

It's always the last ball rolling that screws you, I've always marveled at that, it's amazing how often it happens

I finished watching a match from Strickland-Reyes from the Sands back in the middle 90s last night. Efren won this one 11-8. Of the 19 breaks only four (4) times were Efren or Earl able to park the CB in the middle of the table.

So, the first match was 4/25 and now this one 4/19. That's 8/44 or about a 18% clip so far.

Flush hit on 1 is all you can control. Can't control all the others. Most " boy,he can squat his rock!" stories are bulls@&t.

come down bouncing in the center of the table avoiding that "last ball kiss".

Wade Crane used to break and the cue ball would jump up in the air a few feet. Then come come down bouncing in the center of the table avoiding that "last ball kiss".

This was incredible to see, it would take him a couple of hours before he could do it, so it was saved for gambling matches on worn cloth.

years back with the very slow tables you had to hit real hard. so popping the cue in the air kept it in play and didnt waste speed going down from table friction or that was what was thought.
but you didnt rack your own and get to have a set break with the balls going where you wanted. the break wasnt such a big spot.

Just finished watching the AccuStats video of Archer and Reyes from the Sands back in the mid 90s. Archer won this one 11-10 and of the 21 breaks they were only able to park the CB near the middle four (4) times. And I am being kind when I say four times because a couple were borderline.

Altogether in the three matches I have watched so far its 12 out of 65. That's around 18% for the total.

For me, center ball with a full hit on the one ball but many if not most pros don't try to squat the rock now, they use the cut break.

I've noticed how often the last ball rolling is the one that goes into a pocket.

But I could be "cooking the data" in my mind...

In the course of the game yes. On the snap, no. I can't count the number of times I've made 3 or 4 balls on the snap and the last ball rolling will inevitably place itself between the cue ball & 1st intended object ball.

Try watching a match between the best players of today. Say ten ball between SVB and Ko Pin Yi. I imagine the results are vastly different from matches played 20 years ago.

I never did get to see Wade do it in his prime, but as far back as the 80's,there was one guy in my mind that was THE MAN as far as squatting it,and the guy that inspired me to learn how.

Mike Sigel. He might not have had the raw power of David Howard or Earl, but had great control and consistent 26MPH speed.

A cult legend and road player, the late Pete Horne was devastating with it as well. Tommy D.

For me, center ball with a full hit on the one ball
To squat the rock, the CB must have slight topspin when it arrives at the one. A center-ball hit will work at a slower break speed, but with a power break, a slightly-above-center hit is required. For more information and video demonstrations, see the break squat resource page.

Regards,
Dave
