It may seem that way if you are unaware of how much R&D has been, and is being done.
Besides, perfection is not for everyone.
If you could, I would be very interested & appreciative if you can relay to me how many companies are doing any real R&D & to what ends & how much they are spending & to whom are they looking for help.
Like Lamas posted, Callaway just partnered with Boeing. Almost every golf club & shaft manufacturer has a hitting robot & computerized ball flight analysis technology & multiple engineers on the pay roll. Also there is ever on going improvement in golf grips as well.
I know of no such like R&D for pool. How much can be being spent when there is not that much to be made?
Golf is a 76 BILLION DOLLAR annual industry. The winner of an AVERAGE weekly tournament gets over a Million Dollars & 60 or more players get a payout every week.
What's the highest payout to a winner of the 'richest' pool tournament.
What do you mean perfection is not for everyone?
Are you saying that the manufacturers of pool cues, shafts, & tips should just settle for mediocrity & not pursue a better product.

Pool is a complicated game but utilizes simple tools.
The cue for example is a simple tool. And for the most part, the industry has always produced cues that were as advanced as the technology and materials have allowed them to be. Sure, there's a certain lag, but then again, this is just pool.
But fear not for the technological future of the cue. Form Follows Function, which we have mastered just fine, which means, there is nothing really left that we need a cue to do, that we cannot get it to do. All there is left to "fix" is aesthetics and personal preference - "the perfect cue" for everyone will never exist.

I know you know but...
It's not about how many patent requests that were made by individuals hoping to find that get rich product or even about how many patents were granted that did or did not make it into production.
I've seen in my adult life the significant improvements that have made in golf equipment & the fitting of that equipment to the individual not to mention the same for tennis & even baseball.
Pool equipment is behind. But... as has been suggested...

I wonder how many pro golfers said something like that who were left behind until they realized the error of their thinking & made some equipment changes in order to try to keep up.

Golf club technology has come a long way....and golf courses just get harder to compensate. It's common to see courses playing well over 7000 yards. That's crazy. What are we going to do? Start playing on snooker tables, with sand traps scattered about for good measure? Pretty soon they'll have to play on tables with 3" pockets, just to make it interesting.
Personally, I almost think they should start thinking about restricting equipment for pros, not inventing more. That's just my opinion.

My cue works just fine as it is. 99% of the time when something goes wrong, it is me and not the cue.
That is what has been done for golf clubs. The technology was so productive & yielded such vast improvements that the USGA did place limits on club heads for volume/size & COR. Leisurely amateurs, except for certain situations are not under those same restrictions.
There is not even a standard table for pool championships.
There has been talk about making the golf hole bigger for amateurs but there is too much tradition I think for that to happen in golf & many amateurs that can not play like a pro think that they can putt close to a pro.
So... what would be wrong if pros played on tables with 3" pockets & amateurs played on 4 1/2" pockets?
Would that not be similar to pros playing 7000 yard courses & amateurs playing 5500 yard courses?
The game of pool is almost in total disarray & there is almost no money in it other what is produced by amateur leagues & cue sales etc.
So... there is no real monetary incentive for advancement other than what has taken place in the shaft industry...
And THAT is what this thread is sort of about.

I measured my 56 year old player and it was 11mm, An early low mass shaft for low squirt. It also had a reverse pin in the shaft.
I sanded it down and my friends asked me to do theirs back in those days.
Could I have gotten a patent for that diameter? :smile::thumbup:

Back in the day when the cavity back irons first came out not too many Pros made the switch at first.
Pros can hit 260 shots in a tournament nearly perfectly but even they make a mishit every now & then.
That cavity back iron could make that ONE mishit not nearly as bad as it might be with a blade iron.
So... pros began making the switch because that one shot could be the difference between winning or not of making the cut & getting check... or not.
Again, I know golf is not exactly the same as pool but there are similarities.
I can see a day when there will not be a pro player that is not using some form of an LD shaft.
It may not be tomorrow, but one day.
What should a cue be able to do, that we cant make it do?

Solid shafts, no jump cues, no extensions, leather tips, etc. It will make it a lot more difficult to string together racks of 9-ball and high 14.1 runs. That 1 in 100 shot that goes in now will stop going in, or may not even be attempted. They should have done that way more aggressively for golf many years ago.
The ONLY think that need be done for golf is to have a standard restricted spec golf ball for professionals. Hell even if they just restricted the dimple pattern it would make a big difference.
But there is too much money to be made.
It is a rather odd thing in that many amateurs wanted to play with the same equipment as the pros like blade even though they were shooting in the high 90s... or higher.
Then there is the other spectrum that wants every advantage that they can get even if it is 'illegal'.
How about a zero squirt cue (as a simple example)?
But that isn't really the point; I don't know what a new cue might be able to do. The guys that played with maces, and sticks with no leather or chalk thought the same thing as you, until Mingaud came along. Suddenly english is a new possibility.
