Since I quit the smoking (both kinds:)). My B/P has gone from 160 to 200 over 110 to 85 and a heart rate of 90 or more with a bunch of BP meds...to.

Now I average 140 over 66 with a heart rate of 60-70 and feel like I did 10 or more years ago.

These are the meds I took and the meds I take now.

Before Now

*****
Lasix 40MG. a day 20 MG a day

Lisinopril 80 MG a day 20 MG a day

Lopresser 150 to 200 MG a day NONE

Wafarin 2.5 MG (blood thinner)

Two months ago I couldn't walk 50 foot w/o being out of breath and my heart feeling like it was coming out of my chest. Life is good again. Johnnyt

Thats great news John. Hope you hang in there and do whats best for you.
I still smoke (and drink) way too much, and I know one of them will get me sooner or later.
So far no shortness of breath, but a lot of other things really suck. How did you quit smoking ?

I take Lisinopril as well. My blood pressure was 156 over 119 and went down to 110 over 70. I have been taking it just over a year now. The first two weeks I was super tired but got used to it fairly quickly. I am glad you are doing much better. I enjoy your posts very much.

Hey Johnny

Wonderful. You just did yourself the biggest favor you could have done. I haven't done too many smart things in my life, but quitting smoking at the age of 22 certainly was one of the smartest. Next, or maybe first, was marrying the girl to whom I have now been married for just short of 60 years. Your pool game will improve. I look forward to seeing you announce your next high run.

I quit 11 years ago. I was a 2 1/2 pack a day smoker. I watched 2 of my neighbors die from lung cancer. It was not a pretty sight. I thought of not seeing my grandchildren grow up. I thought of being on oxygen. I tried to quit 4 or 5 times before I really was willing to give it up. If you are willing and can make it past the first few weeks, it just gets easier. Quitting did not affect my game after a couple of months. One thing you can be sure of, if you are a smoker, you will die from smoking. Best wishes and hang in there to anyone who decides it's time to give up cigarettes.

I quit the day I took a test at the Doctors that showed I had only 45% lung volume left and after reading an artical in AARP from Dr. Koop on it's never too late to quit. I just threw the rest of my carton of Camel regulars away along with all my ash trays and lighters.

This is always great news to hear. You probably just added a few years to your life, and ensured that those remaining will be more pleasant.

I wish I could give up smoking (cigarettes  ), but my body really seems to need them.

It's bizarre, they don't smell or taste good, don't make you feel good, and are guaranteed to kill you if you keep smoking them. The only reason people smoke cigs is because they're HORRIBLY addictive.

Congrats Johnny. I quit smoking 30yrs ago. never did smoke the funny stuff

After a heart attack and 2 stents, my daily meds each morning include..

Crestor

Nexium

I feel like shit

Quitting is never easy.

I quit 3 months after my daughter was born. That is after 20 plus years of a pack and a half to two packs a day. If I could bottle the determination I developed to quit I'd be well off. I think the biggest factor I had to over come was recognizing my identity without a cigarett. As opposed to the help I was getting by Philip Morris and the other criminals... I never minded other people's willingness to keep smoking. That is their decision and I am no one to say otherwise. I just never met someone that regrets having quit smoking. Get my point?

Congrats on quitting smoking! It's a nasty, deadly habit.

Too many folks who try and quit give up too quick, they don't tough it out until they start seeing (feeling) real results. Good on you for sticking with it.

Ain't that the the truth. But it is still the only thing I do real well !

congratulations and good luck... I am rolling into week 5 smoke free myself..the first two weeks are the hardest.. then after that it's all down hill..

whenever I feel a really bad craving at home... I go run a rack of balls.. it helps focus the mind away from the cigarette..

Good for you....keep it up

When I was a die hard powerlifter I had to go to the company nurse to do the yearly checkup. My BP was 84/44 with a 67 HR. The nurse asked me if I ever jump out of bed when I wake up to which I told her no....I take my time getting up. She said that was a good idea because if I get out of bed quick after waking I would probably pass out. The funny part is that right before she took my BP I drank a cup of coffee and had been dipping snuff all day.

Since quitting bench press comps (my aching joints) my BP is now normal. The nurse said that normally the only people with a BP like mine are marathon runners and higher (triathletes etc).

*edit* I really do need to quit dipping. It's an awful habit. Dunno about quitting smoking lefties though. I don't spark up the peace pipe enough to worry about it.

Congradulations on quiting,I'm not trying to steal your thunder but Feb. the 18th will be two year's with quiting smoking/drinking for me,did both to much. What I'm getting at is,it is hard to do,I was introduced to a website called : http://quitnet.com/ it's free and they send you emails every two week's showing how many cig's you didn't smoke, how much money you saved, how much time you added to your life, etc, etc, anyway,it helped me alot and I'm still using it so maybe it'll help you out. My roommate told me about it,hope it helps you and good luck....Ron:thumbup:

My admiration JohnnyT

I like that kind of news.Very inspirational .Four hours of pool a day plus your new biological datas...Hope you have many followers.By the way can we have your age and weight?

I'm sitting here reading these posts after I just smoke two cigs and had a cup of coffee. Now I'm coughing up a damn lung and I'm only 25. Why?

The point I'm trying to make is that hearing the posts in this thread with all the success stories of quitting is motivating. Why do we do it anyway?

Congrats to JohnnyT for taking that step.

John
