I am in Leesburg VA for work this week, google maps shows me near First Break in Sterling and Carpool and Breakers. Anyone around here play straight pool? I am always looking to play new people in different towns as part of my work travels.

Let me know...planning on heading to First Break tonight, probably 7:30 to 10:30.

Where's Black-Balled? He might be able to hook up. I think he lives kind of close by. :)

How good do you play?? If you really want a challenge I cold alert somebody. Careful though... he can run a hundred or two if he's hitting em...

Not that good. If I'm playing at my level I should run a twenty or thirty in a 100 game, haven't run a 40 in competition yet. Trying to learn more and willing to play anyone though but I may not provide much challenge for an A player.

Hey LightsOut, I think I actually bumped into you last night at First Break.

My buddy, an asian guy, was playing straight pool with an unfamiliar face last night. Was it you? I was the guy who had to drag him out of there early, unfortunately we had agreed to meet someone and were already a bit late.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed the place. Don't see much 14.1 played there but there are plenty of A players who could probably run 70-100 on a good day.

That was me- in my worst form of late. Don't play on Diamonds much at all (none at home in SE PA) and I sharked myself early with easy misses on those pockets. Never got back from the mental funk...Nice tables but tough...

I'll be back on the horse tonight.

Well, hope you ended up shooting better tonight. It's hard to adjust.

The worst thing about diamonds is... when you first start playing on them, all you can think about is the smaller pockets. Later on you find out the hardest adjustment to make isn't making the ball, it's getting used to faster speed and bouncy rails :p The upside is that getting the cue ball to move and spreading the balls is effortless.

I'll be back in there maybe tomorrow or friday so I'll watch for you. I hardly play 14.1 anymore but I do love it.

There's a good 9 ball tourney there every Thursday night at 8:00. It's handicapped, races to 5 on the winners side, $20 entry. Swing by if you want to join it.

Thanks. Been enjoying the room at First Break. Nice conditions, clean and polished balls and tough Diamonds (standard really, tough for me...). Maybe I'll get back tonight or some other day in the distant future. Thanks to Jeff and Pete (local players I met) for their hospitality.

For those who responded to Lights out, I'm just curious why there are no straight pool leagues around N. Virginia. I thought I heard of one a few years ago, but not now. I currently play in an APA 8 ball division, but wouldn't mind playing some 14.1, which I played a lot as a kid about a million years ago when my dad had a table installed in our house in NJ. Don't get me wrong, it's been years, decades actually, since I've played a game of straight with anyone, and I'd undoubtedly be hard pressed to run maybe 15 balls. But if only for nostalgia's sake, I think I'd like to start playing it again if the opportunity arose.

Thanks for any responses.

There are some strong players in this area, I guess though they're all about 9b/10b.

Possibly because it's a pretty young crowd. Locally the pros I've seen the most are brandon shuff and brian deska, both pretty young. Mike davis too, and he plays great straight pool.

But I think to support a whole league, we'd need an older crowd.

Well I certainly qualify for the older crowd I think. At this stage with no leagues around, I'd settle for the occasional one off friendly game of 14.1, although I'd undoubtedly get whomped by an experienced player, since as I mentioned, I haven't played for years. Still, it's all fun and I'm sure I'd learn a thing or two.

It occurred to me maybe this discussion belongs in the 14.1 Forum? (Just want to follow the rules.)

There uses to be a 14.1 League at First Break when I lived up there but that was before the fire and the new Diamond tables.

Thanks for the invite, but couldn't make it last night. Perhaps we can meet there at some point later? I should have more time on my hands the week after next.

Too bad, coz last nite was the nite to be there...not that I was there!
