I don't know why so many people think Sigel was the best 9-ball player ever. Earl Strickland is easily the greatest 9-ball player who ever lived. Now before you start *****ing about how many of these threads you've seen, this is about Earl vs Mike, not Efren.

I don't give a crap how many titles Mike Sigel holds, use your brain and realize how many times Earl has won the US OPEN 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP, AND THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP. Now count all of those up, and over a period of how many years did Earl win those tournaments? He has already withstood the test of time, and although he has the worst attitude of any player, his game speaks for itself.

Mike Sigel is a better all around player than Earl, but in 9-ball, Earl is the greatest. The problem is that so many of you hate him so much because of his attitude, that it causes you to think less of his game. Take onepocketchump for example, he thinks Kelly Fisher can beat Earl in 9-ball playing even. LOL what a joke.

Also, I am the sexiest person in the world. I don't know why Im so sexy, but I just am.

In his time, Sigel was the best all around player. Sigel used to like going to the losers bracket because he said he played with even greater focus when that happened. Proof is that he won many tournaments from the losers side.

I doubt Earl is #1 today. Today's players are stronger and equipment is changing with tighter pockets. Also, do not forget that more countries have developed top players, more than ever before.

I think Sigel was smart about going to the loser bracket. Wouldn't it be easier to get thru? You are playing against all losers and getting table time. You are not getting worn out by playing in tense matches against the top players, you are basically letting the top players beat each other up. You may have to play against one of them in the loser bracket but by then they are physically and emotionally drained. Make your way thru all the losers and then beat the player from the winner side once, beat him and you are the champ. He only has the chance to lose once. You had the chance to lose twice and if you do you are in 2nd place.

I wonder if this is how Kevin came up with the format of having Mike play the winner for King of the Hill. Mike came from the "loser" side with one shot to beat the best player from the winner'w side.

Earl has as many titles as anyone but I still believe more people think Luther Lassiter was the greatest nine ball player ever. Legends who saw Don Willis and Harold Worst also believe they were as good as anyone who ever played.

Johnny Archers' record is actually pretty close to Earls; numerous world titles and US Opens as well as being player of the year 4 out of 5 years in the 90's.

They both should already be in the HOF. Would of made Earl a lot more $$ in the IPT if he was seeded and didn't have to get picked on by a girl :D

Don't be so quick to knock Earl out of best all around... he has a 409 ball straight pool run (God help the Pool World if he ever took up playing Straight Pool) and you ain't kiddin' he (IS) the greatest 9 baller ever.

Hmmm....

Maybe Rosy and her 5 sisters think so.

I think the post is between Earl and Sigel, who is greater. But we cannot say the greatest ever, it's as if the world will end tomorrow. There will still hundreds of thousands who will be playing pool in the next hundred of years. There will be one who have the possiblity of breaking all existing records. Lets just talk about today, at this moment, who is greater between the two. I never followed their achievements, but Sigel is in the HOF while Earl is not, yet. I'll just say both are great.

I'm not so sure about that, he played in a tournament I was putting on and came late and had to forfeit his first match. He didn't want to be in the losers bracket and after crying to me to change the rule and to make the guy play he left and never came back forfeiting his second match as well. He actually told me he was the most important player in the tournament and it would be a failure if he didn't play. I guess I told him off a little and that may have had something to do with him not coming back. We were packed every night by the way, no one missed him at all and Larry Liscotti (sp?)won the tournament. In fact he became the joke of the tournament with his attitude As far as him and Strickland, Sigel I believe would beat Strickland. I know they gambled more then once and Sigel won. I saw one where Strickland quit and left looking like he thought he had no chance.

Oh really?
Lets lock Earl and Mike up in a room for a couple of days and play a set of 9-ball, 14.1, 1-pocket, and banks. Lets just see what hapens. Bank of America would back me on that bet and I would take a whole lot of tickets on Mike.

i think you're making a lot of assumptions, when all earl has done is win at 9ball. he tore up the KOH tourney didn't he.

Earl

If Earl isn't the greatest nine ball player, he definitely has one of the highest gears when he's right. He makes it look so easy. Another player in this category would have to be Louie Roberts. I believe Sigel quoted in a Billiards Digest article once that for a six month to a year period, Louie played better nine ball than anyone.

Yep, back years ago when he listening to tapes all the time. It was kind of funny.
Louie came to Shreveport back in those days and Buddy kept him busted and living there for about 3 months. That was in about 73-74.
I don't remember anybody beating Buddy at Guys&Dolls in those days.

So we can't count on Sigel's titles, but we can count on Earl's titles? How's that a fair assessment???

That's simply not true. Most of us feel that Earl is one of the greatest 9-ball players that ever lived. Period. He should be in the Hall of Fame. However, some of us believe that Buddy Hall, Mike Sigel, and Nick Varner have a higher 9-ball ranking than Earl because those three excel at the other parts of the game more than Earl: safety play, patterns, and position. Earl's legendary shotmaking make him one of the most formidable 9-ball players that ever played. No question about it.

You got that right. Louie Roberts won the US Open back to back, I believe. He was the smoothest most coordinated pool player I have ever had the pleasure of seeing stroking a cue.

Well now. This sounds like a made for TV challenge match. The mouth vs the crier. The good vs the bad. They could even have a series of challenge matches. 8-ball; 9-ball; and straight pool. To crown the all around champion.

Sigel and Roberts played in the finals of one of Terry Stonier's tournaments in Sacramento, and in a race to 11 on a fairly tight table, there was one missed ball between them. Sigel was the one who missed the ball, and later Roberts broke in the hill-hill nine ball.
