Strong Arm John?

He might have needed the spot but i reckon there were times when doug smith had the biggest gear going at least for that day

He was down in tx and got in a 9b game playing for something decent race to 7 won the flip and ran the set out. They did not play a second set next day the money brought in another player bigger kinda guy i heard he was mexican anyway they flip for the break race to 7 same money. Same thing happens doug runs the set out. The mexican tries to jump doug wow it was rough on the road back in the day

Doug Smith had the big gear on the bar box at one time you can believe that

How many different cues did Doug Smith use during the set he played you?

He also had his own cueball which he usually negotiated into play

SAJ was and probably still is a VG bar box player but had trouble hitting the end rail on a big table the last time i saw him in action

enjoyable guy to shoot the shit with

it would be probably better if he just had one eye

Yes, Doug is very knowledgeable about pool, it's too bad he has glaucoma now and it's seriously effected his pool game. I've tried to work with him on his depth perception, but he can't see where he's contacting the cue ball, it would be probably better if he just had one eye.

That was "Fat Ralph" that he had that issue with in Ft. Worth Texas.

John will send in the cash if he likes the game and plenty of it. I have seen him both win and lose and he takes both in stride. Also, he is capable of giving up some crazy weight, all a guy has to do is make a request watchout you just might get what ask for and be able to bet something. A C player can get more from John than from most any other roadman. I reckon most of the real good players or better have the best of it on the big table but John still plays a pretty good speed on the bar table. About 8 ball, he don't play no silly games he gets a rail or gives up BIH, but he is pretty patient. John ain't no BS if he is in the room he will find some action any room gets hopping when John gets to town. I reckon he has about maybe 4-6 more weeks and he will done for this pool season cause these days John is a working man he will be rolling blacktop all summer till it gets cold in the late fall.

Last time he was in the area he gave a decent APA SL 7 the 5 on a bar table and just robbed him.

i wonder how well he would have played if he dedicated himself to the game full time.

Benny ran 11 on Omaha John

Gotta love it. Run 10 racks, then ask for a spot. :D

Yeah, but on a bar table that's what it takes. Benny ran 11 on Omaha John one time at Larry Mao's place in KC (John came back another day and turned the tables). That's where I gave Larry the 6 Ball and just about cleaned out the bar. ;) Those were the days.

I was there .

Yeah, like Buddy said "he'll never have to worry about a shot clock". ;)

I do have a LOT of Strong Arm John stories, probably enough for a complete book. He took me out of high school on the road all through Mo, Ks, Ok, and Texas back in 83.

Then we tortured the SE Coast of Florida, maybe people have heard about my matches giving Mario the 7 OUT in Miami. Come to think about it I believe someone contacted me that they have it on video. Now that would be interesting, maybe put some commentary on top of it.

I saw the last 2 hrs of the match . I think some one there told me you started the ahead set with a 6 pack and took it down in about 11 hrs . I was on vacation from upstate NY and it was cold and rainy out , not that I needed an excuse to go to the pool room .

I enjoyed reading this thread. The videos of SAJ 'arm-wrestling' at DCC was taken by me. It was really fun to see that all go down. Glad I could share it with you guys. This was all going on while Shane was torturing Alex the last night of the DCC which was the last night at the Executive West. My first and only year and it was a blast.

We went to Bellvue, Ohio and Doug played Tony Moshae (not sure of spelling of last name) father. Put 10 racks on his father on a race to 10 for a thousand. Then turned around a put 10 racks on Tony for the same. We had so much fun on the road back then. I wonder if John did not take every spring and summer off for softball how much better he would be? Oh yeah CJ I remember when he went a picked you up right out of High School. Someone should write a book about John's road trips and the matches he has been envolved in. The guy is an excellent reader of peoples game and speed. He was making a living out there when a lot of better players were sitting around busted.

When we left there was no money left in the bar, we won every dime

Yes indeed, Big John and I had some very profitable trips. We beat southeast Florida out of a small fortune. I remember we were in Key Largo at a bar and the locals said there was a player{that came in} that had NEVER been beat. John and I looked at each other and had to contain "licking our chops". His "perfect record" was fixing to get compromised. ;)

Later that night, I'm playing the guy for $20 in the middle and John's got $600 on the side. When we left there was no more money in the bar, we won every dime. John could work the side action better than anyone I've ever seen to this day.

Brickyard Billiards...

The Big Arm will be there this week and next weekend looking for BIG action!!! He is tickled to death when I told him of the talk in AZ land.

The other man was Benny "The Goose" Conway from Kansas City. He played very close to "Omaha" John's speed on a bar table.

I remember in 1983, Benny was rated a 5 handicap in a local Regional tournament in the Busch Pool League.

If you really know him, he's an A Hole!!!

I guess I dont know him then, he has always been okay to me.

I have been told he likes pool but freakin loves softball...Kinda reminds me of a guy in the movie that says he likes "STOCKER".

Strong Arm tried to trap me in a game for about three months he used to call me every week. Tell me things like yea we play around the same speed (I have no chance beating strong arm) He knew I liked to gamble big and even tried to trap me with a horse of his that wanted to shoot free throws best out of a hundred I would have bet the moon (my horse was the second greatest foul shooter ever behind Ted St. Martin) but John and I lost contact. He is very dillagent about trying to make a score for sure.

SA John

John came in played Larry Mayo giving up pretty good weight bout year ago, then proceeded to hook him up even when outs seemed to be there, very deliberate player. Larry missed straight in shots after kicking out for what seemed like an hour. CJ giving Larry the 6 on a barbox is more than just strong, even w age and physical impediments he still plays strong for the cash. Saez gave him a big spot and Larry got some cash on that deal, limping around the table and all. Great stories keep'm coming.

Old thread, but I found this when SAJ came through STL last week. I thought it was strange when I got two calls from two separate local bars in 12 hours about this older guy who was looking for a game. Something seemed amiss based on timing when him and another cat showed up near closing time at a local bar I frequent, and then another where I shoot leagues the next day. Turns out it was SAJ and Billy Kirshner. Ended up talking with Billy for a while and it was a good hang, but I'm not taking that action. I reckon I liked my money a little too much that day.
