Stupid bank shot....................

Does anybody know if the 3-rail cross side can be made with the OB crossing between the pockets off the first or second rail (and then reversing into the pocket)?

Seems to me I've seen that done...?

pj <- maybe I've done it

I have played to bank a cross-side beyond the side pocket to come back to the other side for a two-railer. It's one way to avoid a kiss.

Like this? Helluva shot. Seems almost easier as a 3-railer...

My standard placement for the 3-rail shot is with the object ball centered between the two side pockets (on the center spot) and the cue ball about 10 inches straight towards a side pocket. The shot is a half-ball hit on the object ball with no spin whatsoever on the cue ball. That works fine and it is easy for a beginner to do on his own, as long as he can hit the ball hard enough.

The shot does not work so well on new cloth because you tend to get slippage rather than reversing side spin on the slippery rails.

Yep. Agree 100% can't remember who I saw do it with no English, Brumback maybe?

Couldn't believe it worked without the English on the CB. That was probably 10 or more years ago.

Why the left on this shot?

Left throws the object ball back to the right after hitting the first rail. That slight change in direction will also be seen off the second rail. Elementary my dear Watson!

Try it without the English - you will not notice a difference.

It seems like left [on the CB] would put right on the OB and make it come short off second cushion.
... where does the OB get the left from?
It's a little counterintuitive - the Devil's in the details...

The OB gets a little more left from colliding with the 1st rail than the amount of right put on it by the CB. That "excess" left is just enough to turn the OB toward the pocket off the 2nd rail.

I tried that shot about 50 time and never came close. I couldn't get CB out of the way much less make it.

Huh? Start with ob in center of table and set cb up for straight in shot to side pocket..

Cut ob into rail approx 1" from pocket and use same side spinglish as the side you miss pocket on

Hit hard.

I'm talking about the shot in my op, the Spaeth bank. That side pocket bank is easy compared to it. I can make the side pocket two or three rails. That shot in the video isn't so easy.

You may have to hit it harder than you think (so the OB sinks into the cushion more, giving the CB more room/time to carom aside). Maybe with a little more angle too (trusting the inside english to tighten the angle off the first rail). And remember that too much high or low reduces the sidespin effect.

Could also be your balls/rails are too clean...

No chance of that. My local haunt is not the greatest at cleaning their stuff.

Right. The spaeth one is not for mortals. Put the cue down and walk away.

Here's a similar shot from Willie Jopling where you have to duck the kiss.
