Super Billiards Expo

I was just wondering why none of the pool magazines ever really promote the Super Billiard Expo. I recall reading an article recently in one of the major mags that was ENAMORED over the China Expo. Maybe it's me, but the last time I checked 99.9% of the demographics who read these magazines have never been to China and likely will never go.

Pool and Billiard Magazine and Billiards Digest (from what I recall) have never put the SBE on the cover, yet it's the 2nd longest running Pro event (behind the US Open 9-ball). Not to mention, many of us have been to the SBE --- unlike China.

I wonder why the Super Billiards Expo never really gets a mention, gets promoted or is ever listed on the homepage of any of the top pool mags when it's only 2 weeks away and a few thousand people either play in the event, gamble, play in mini-events, etc. I dunno --- just doesn't make sense.

Who knows - maybe there's politics. The SBE is definitely one of THE events of the year. That's almost like Golf Digest never putting the PGA Championship on the cover or writing columns, etc, ahead of time.

These magazines better start covering the expo...or I'll DROP those motherfu**ers!

I know our event..The Fury 14.1 Challenge has an ad in Inside Pool !!!

LOL, i agree there should be more coverage of the SBE !!

they may not promote the expo in advance of it's taking place, but they devote plenty of space after the event. when i was working for inside pool, they had more than half a dozen people reporting and photographing the event for four days and nites.

Its all about $$$. If the organizers of SBE want to promote their event in advance in magazines and websites, then they will need to pay for ads. Whereas, once the event is over, the magazines and websites will write stories to attract traffic and attention.

As for the people who are already decided to go to SBE, it doesn't make sense to spend advertising money to convince them to go. They're going to go anyway, and will tell their friends. That's probably the best form of advertising, word of mouth. Its probably better use of resources for the organizer to spend their promotional budget on making the event better, thus retaining your loyalty, than making you aware of an event you already knew about.

It sure is about the money.

Haven't you ever noticed that there is always a feature story about something in any newspaper or magazine that amazingly also has a advertisement either on that page or close to it.

Magazines and newspaper make their money off of advertisers and not thru subscription rates. They want to have subscriptions to show how many targeted people will see the ad thus attracting and driving advertising rates.

That is why pool gets no coverage in the newspapers. How many ads do you ever see there from anything that is pool related other than the local swimming pool dealer having a close out sale on pool tables included with their swimming pool and spa supplies?

They do cover it. They trade advertising space for booth space and they give it a write up. It all comes down to how much people spend on advertising. To them it is pretty much a small trade show with a large amateur tournament, a small pro event and a large league event. They do cover it pretty good in the large pool magazines, but it rarely makes front cover news.

i agree, there should be stronger coverage for this event. Allen Hopkins is an icon of the sport, and the event has run like 2 decades now. Not too many events can say that

Can you elaborate on stronger coverage? What would you like to see more?

I think that was my original point. Why wouldn't the 2nd longest running pro event not make cover EVENTUALLY over the past 25 years or so?

I'm just saying....

Based on the little experience I have with the major magazines, some of them sell the covers as part of ad packages, some of them basically have most of the months spoken for in advance (usually stuff like US Open winner, Christmas shopping issue, Room of the year issue, stuff like that.)

TAR has done 20 independent events, had over $250,000 total up for grabs in all our matches, covered four Derby Citys, three of them 24 hours a day, four USBTC's, the US Open 10 Ball and was the first as far as I know to use ustream for free streaming pool. Guess how many magazine articles (forget covers, we fat) have been done on us ? Zero.

The Expo is the only model in the pool world that makes any financial sense for giant events. The mix of amateurs, pro's and vendors along with the casual buyer is the magic bullet. Who wants to talk about that ?

When I look at seemingly the same articles printed over and over again it kinda makes me shake my head at what gets put in the mags. I know all about how they work. I guess I just expect too much.

Don't hold your breath on that cover.

<-----only reads the mags once in a great while now
