Hey guys, i'm hoping for some constructive criticism. I can't play any regular pool because i'm working too much but I think I can improve on my break during this busy time in my life. I can already tell that i need to stand up a little higher and try to incorporate my hips more but I would love for the forum to help me further. All suggestions are welcome! BTW, I'm gonna try weekly to put up another video to see how the progress is coming.

i'm a new player...but ...

Definately stand higher up...also on the follow through I drive my cue straight through the ball actually driving the tip towards the rack with it ending up on the table snapping my wrist as i hit the cue ball

your hitting it way to hard! take 7-9 mph's off it and you might see better results. you wanna pop and stop, not lose control of the CB.

I appreciate the responses. However, at this time, power and velocity is my only concern. I actually can hit the one ball very very square when thats my entire focus. So at this time, especially when practicing the break I have to try to hit them as hard as possible.

I was thinking the same thing. You got some power behind that stroke, can you fully control that kind of speed?

Yeah, most of the time I can. Remember, my total focus is hitting them hard right now. My best speed is 25 mph. I would say i'm hitting them about 21-23 during the video. My goal is to hit them over 27-28 on the regular with control.

For playing 8ball your probably not going to get in a whole lot of trouble
letting the cb go forward towards the rack.Playing 9ball your going kill your chance of any packages by letting the cb lose like that. The cb must stay around the middle of the table. You got a good break though.
Here's a video of me breaking and running some rack's.
I come up dry a couple of times but the point is you don't have to really
crack as hard as you think, control is what your looking for.

When I measured your breaks in the video with the audio method your range was between 18 mph and 25 mph with only one at 25mph.

That's assuming a 9 foot table breaking on the headstring one diamond from the left rail (that's where it looked like you were breaking from to me). I used the Break Speed App on my Iphone.

You may want to move your grip hand a little forward and make sure you have a very loose grip.

those are some good speeds. How do you like the Break Rack?

you're not turning your hips to throw your body into the shot. and you should stay down on the break. don't lift your body or, in your case, your bridge hand and tip off the table when you break

Those speeds put you right into the pro break speed. At the US Open 10 Ball, the pros were clocking around 21 - 22 average.

I was going to ask you, does the cue ball action off the Break-Rak seem about the same as a real rack?

Chris

There is some reality to it. Its a great tool. I'll hit several with the breakrack then I always follow up hitting some 9 and 10 ball racks. There is no subsitute for the actual racked balls but this allows you to get some "reps" in.

Thats great technology with that app. if its truly that accurate in regards to watching me break over a video!! Yeah, i like the breakrack to get some "reps" in. Like I told another member, theres no subsitute for racking the balls. I'll hit maybe 10 + min on the break rack then I start racking 9 & 10 ball racks and try to play patterns and check my cueball reaction.

Free advice? Ok. This is what you get from me for free....

You get nothing for nothing and damn little for two cents. ... you get what you pay for - & - you're game will only be worth what you're willing to invest in it. If you want a top notch game, there's a big price tag attached to it - not just monetarily - but emotionally & mentally. I'm not sure if that will help your break, but its the best free advice you'll ever get.

Blackjack- That has to be one of the most condescending comments to any post I've put in this forum or any other. Just so you'll know, I have sought instruction from people like: Jim McDermott, Matlock, B.Hall, among others, at which I paid!! I play at a decent level but i'm actually looking at improving on one of thes most important aspescts of this game. I never actually sought quote & unqoute "free advice". If you have nothing better to do than throw in rude comments and so called "two cents" worth of advice then why stop by this post and offer any input? Simply move on! You may teach BCA pool and it give 14.1 advice, but I'm sure you can't break over 25 mph, so why would I care what you think? Its not I sought you out and asked; hey blackjack can you show me how to follow through or how can i establich better break balls? No, I didn't. So please have a little courtesy unless I single you out for free advice when I know you charge for it. To all other members, I know people Blackjack has mucho amounts of credibility here, and I'm not trying to stir trouble, but come on, this guy is slightly out of line and someone needs to tell him...

I agree - I was taken aback by your comments. A little grouchy today? He didn't solicit your professional advice. He wanted to know what this free forum thought of his break. Some of the suggestions were right on too.

Clint,

A couple of suggestions on the break. Your final "punch" seems to me to have too much muscular tension. I would suggest to experiment with a slower transition from the backswing to the forward swing, and make sure it is a "swing" with an arc, and not a "punch". This is a timing thing. Force is generated through the proper sequence of events, and the body should be in sync with the arm. A feeling of waiting at the top of the swing helps to make the body weight shift which leads to a lot of good things.

This is coming from a big guy with a crappy break - so take that into consideration.

But it's free.

Much too hard stroke- no control at all.

No Control=Bad Break!

Agreed. I think you would be better served taking some off the break and focus on a square hit with control of the cue ball. I mean, sure its fun to whack the rack sometimes, but you will never consistantly put racks together if you dont get the break under control first.
Its easier to add speed to control than control to speed.
Chuck

The phrase herky jerky comes to mind. No fluidity, jerk stop, jerk stop, load up as much as possible, hit the cue ball.

Your goal of seeing a specific mph on your break seems a bit odd. MPH tells you nothing and plenty of people either soft break, or medium break from the side or center with far better results.

The goal is not to kill it, just hit it, hit it square, and lower the mph.
