Szamboti or Mottey ?

Here is a mystery cue I just acquired. The cue is about 10 years old and was purchased by a friend as a Gus Szamboti, by the way he does own a few. It turned out that it wasn't and his money was returned. One story is that it was designed by Mark kulungian and made by Paul Mottey. I am still trying to find out, maybe someone can help. The cue is just beautiful and a monster player.

My suggestion would be to contact Joe Van (classiccues). He can steer you in the right direction.
 
It looks lik a Mottey. I'll check and see if that cue is in the archives. Anyways, here is our policy, any cue we design, we encourage the maker to sign. IN Pauls case, since the cues can be confused with Gus' cues, we always had him sign them, more iomportantly never asked him to not sign them. This is the second example of a cue that I am aware of, of Pauls, that "lost" its signature in the New England region.

Follow up:
Cue number 416.. you can use the internet wayback machine for January 2003, see our listing. This cue has been refinished and rewrapped from our original posting. We had the cue USED, and listed as a MOTTEY with a Gus shaft, as that is what we were told.

It was a nice cue.. R U looking to trade / sell it?

BTW thats not the Gus shaft, looks like it has a new shaft.

Did you guys sell that Mottey with a Gus shaft?
If so, Curious why? Gus shafts bring $600.
Having a Gus shaft on a Mottey is a recipe for a future nightmare IMO, Would you agree?

Because it came to us that way, and the cue was signed when it left us.

Well I like to think that there are honest people who would not try to pass it off as such.

But now, as evident by the pictures the Gus shaft is gone.

To clear up any mystery involving this cue I found it's origin. The cue was designed by Mark Kulungian of Pool Table Magic in August,1995 and had Paul Mottey build the cue to his specs. and signed by Paul Mottey. The cue at that time was sold to Terry Keith. The cue has changed hands a few times and had a refinish which removed the signature. And now it is mine, wow. Mark Kulungian who is a well known authority and collector of fine cues was nice enough to update me on the cues origin and is sending me a copy of the original order. Thanks to all the AZers for there knowledge and help.

I'm attaching a picture of a Mottey joint with the two shafts for you to compare the insert in your shaft pictured with these two Mottey shafts. I think you've already decided about the cue, but I thought i'd include this picture just for information down the road.

The Szamboti shaft that came with the cue was warped and the previous owner had two new shafts made by Greg Kucharski, who is also a friend of mine. Thanks for the heads up. In fact I just added a first generation Predator shaft and Greg is changing the ringwork to match.

Easy to spot

The returns are wrong for a Gus with a Bushka ring. That and it is a Mottey.

I can't thank my fellow AZers enough for your input and knowledge. I just wanted to reassure myself that it is a Mottey cue. And this timeless design will go on forever. i bought this cue for speculation and now will not let it go. It plays like a monster.

What Nick is referring to is the space between the points as they touch the bottom. John Showman has perfect register because they disappear as they touch.

Paul, can you make it to Snooker's next Friday?
