so im in the big pool hall in fairfield ohio last week and this road player is playing this guy. this guy is well known in the cincy-middletown area. so the road guy is up a game or two, snaps the nine, rides on the one, rides on the four and wins the set. the other guy walks up gets the money off the light flips a crumpled up twenty to the guy working there and says im not paying for that sh*t. he's walking out the door and the road guys yelling you've got my money and the he says come outside and get it pr*ck. the road guys a hundred forty tops and the other guys two ten, whaddya do? theres got to be a better way to make money than being on the road.

There sure is. Just stay in your home hall and let the road warriors come to you. That way, your pool pals have your back in such situations.

Had the same exact thing happen about 5 years ago here in Modesto, Ca...Only this time it was $7,000.00 we are talking about..After seeing he is going to lose the set he grabs the money off the light, runs out the door and his big backer goes with him..They got away with it...
Don't mind giving his name...Goes by "BOY GEORGE".....Watch out.....

That's the problem with putting money on the light. I don't do it cause I'm short and can't reach the light to begin with!:D Seriously, if it's for any large amount, say $100+......I make it a must to leave it behind the counter if the room is cool with that.

For some reason I have never really had a problem getting paid. I'm about as non-confrontational as they come. I also never did much high rolling away from the rooms I worked in, or frequented. I have let guys "pay me later" after they were broke, but I always put a 10% vig on it in case it took a while to get paid. That way I was playing 9 to 10 on someone I was beating. I have gotten stiffed, but thats part of the deal.

I'm by no means a high roller, but working in the pool rooms you get the chance to buy cues cheap, know whos playing well, get tips for steering, lend money, and generally have a lot of fun with out even being in action. Good pool rooms always have something fun going on!

Not had problems getting paid when I win...or someone running out the door etc.

guys went broke, wanted to keep playing, so i took the educated risk of playing them on credit.....keep in mind I rarely played guys I didn't know. these were regulars where I played, not strangers...

Yes I have gotten stiffed, by not getting paid later on when letting someone play on credit. That was fairly rare, and a good risk/gain bet...IMO

Now, I'm not one to name names, but there are a couple of pros out there who have done the same thing!

I can even name one or two that post on this site... but I won't!

...and it ain't always this easy! There are plenty of guys who call themselves your friend that won't step in and do anything. Besides, what do you do when the road player says "What are you gonna do? Beat the sh!t out of me?! Fine! When the cops get here, I'll tell 'em its because I was gambling in your establishment!" Most room owners don't like hearing that.

post the cash with an honest non bias individual

That only works if you're the local. If you are the road warrior, you shouldn't trust anybody.

This situation occurs because that road player made a bad deal with the wrong guy. When I was on the road I didn't have time for crybabies that had trouble parting with their money. You should never bet anything that you are not willing to lose. If you have a problem with parting with your money, then be a railbird and not a player.

If it was me in that sitaution, I would not have made scene at all. I would have let the guy leave with his money, shrugged it off and went about my business. I'm a pool player and eventually I'll score somewhere else. Then, at every place I went to from that point forward I would purposely kill the action for that room/city. That's only fair. IMO, someone in the room should have realized that taking the money off the light was wrong and they should have done something about it. That's like going all in on a poker hand and when the other guy's card comes up, you take your chips back and cry foul. To me its the exact same thing.

Lets play some. Whatever you can carry is the bet :)

Chess-man,
I know what I'd do (if things went down exactly as you describe). I'd put the name and address of the establishment in my post. I'd put the welcher's name, address, phone #, physical description, license plate number, make and model of car, employer, and children's names right here on the internet for serious players to see.

Why are you protecting that weasel?????

We do NOT want that guy showing up in the AZB room at DCC - he's banned.

Since the money was posted on the light (I assume by both players) that means he left with both of thier money...

(Thus the reason the guy was yelling at him "you have my money")

I don't think there was much he could do about the situation he got himself into, but If I happened to be stuck in that type of situation, I would be making some visual and mental notes of him and my surroundings...just in case the opportunity to "get even" presented itself...

Probably not worth it, but I can think of a couple easy ways to find out where the guy lives. After that you have several options.

"Boy George" left a bad taste in my mouth at local Cali tourney a long time ago we matched up 8 ahead for 500 on the small track not a large sum but I heard he was good action and the game was fair. I won (in hindsight I do not think I was supposed to) We agreed to play the next day for larger stakes 10 ahead for 2k. He shows up with about 4 guys I am there only with our road team Dennis (another none player) and a very strong Motor City Road player (the real player) When we showed up he wanted to play 8 ahead for 1500 I told him we agreed on 10 ahead for 2k. we argued a bit back and forth till finally I said fine lets post. We posted I won the first two games and he told me that "I quit" he pulled the post money off the light. I was awstruck I never had someone quit an ahead set. He left my 1500 on the table and said we'll play again. I begged to differ I told him to give me 350 (my rough math at the time) and we will never play again. By this time him and his friends started puffing out there chests. Boy George told me he would fight me for the 1500 I said Ok (I had the better end of that by far) post with my guy Dennis who pulled his gun (he always carried ended up serving a year for it) The room owner told us he was calling the cops I said I was not leaving without my 350 George told me they would get m punk a$$ so I hit him. We left our road player wanted us to take him to the airport to go home. To make a long story short Boy George is a freaking weasel (I heard he robbed Bucktooth's jewelry store later on) To this day I still wouldn't mind taking the rest of that 350 out of his hide.

Even in the famous Hard Times, sh-t happens. Ten years ago, Bob Hunter vs. Ernesto, Ten ahead for 10K. The money is on the light, maybe 50 people watching the game. The table is near the front doors of Hard Times, leading to the street.

In walks a black guy. He brandishes a .45 (definitely large caliber), jumps on the table, grabs the money and dashes out the door. A few brave souls peek out the front door, and see him pile into the open back door of a Caddy and screech off.

Why these two experienced veterans choose to put $10,000 on a light escapes me. Chuck (the owner) would have gladly put the money in the safe upstairs, until the match was over. He had done it before for other big games.

Talk about gone in 60 seconds. This took all of ten or fifteen tops.

Jay, or Oscar,
I remember that didn't Ernesto pay for the set since he was down? or something that cost Ernesto a large chunk? It was an odd circumstance and happened to two guys that are real nice road warriors. I met Ernesto while he was working on a table. I had no idea who he was we talked for a few minutes and I had Antonio Lining with me who was resting at the hotel. We were seeking a pumped up Ismael Paez (I think it was right after he finished 2nd in the world pool championship) I wanted to try to get Morro to play Antonio even or only giving up the 8ball. Ernesto and I talked and and we played some 20 a game 9 ball. I could tell I was totally outclassed, but he was a gentleman to play against and I had no idea he was a champion. The only strong player at that time in Cali I knew was Max and he may not have even lived there yet. Anyway I way underestimated Ernesto's game and thought I could get Antonio easy action while waiting on Morro. Ernesto expressed intrest in playing my "friend" later that evening. I went to get Antonio and Keiko and described who he would be playing. He chuckled and told me our easy action would ruin any game we hoped to make. Keiko went on to say that Ernesto at the time was top ten on the Cali coast t was bad action for us. We never came back to play and Ernesto may have wondered who my "friend' since we never showed. It is a shame Ernesto and Bobby got robbed with those two I know bad things happen to good people.
