At "39:20" on this video we see why pool will always have an up hill battle for real dollars and real sponsorship. Maybe an adult diaper changing table should be installed at tournaments. If I were the Tournament Director here . . . match over and 2nd place dollars go to the payout field. ( All warnings are given before the matches start.)

It wasnt that bad , the guy knew the rack was blown and just lost his cool a little.
Theres much much worse incidents in pro sports than you see in pool.

I agree with the others. I've seen a lot worse.

As an example, players cracking cue sticks in half out of frustration is quite common.

The worst, I think I've heard of, though, is when poor Fabrio was so bummed out traveling to the United States from Italy and lost his match at Super Billiards Expo in the pro event. He banged his head on the corner of the pool table hard and caused blood. I empathize with how he would feel, incurring all the expenses to get here, only to get knocked out first round.

I would agree with the OP if it was just a scratch on the break fit. But he did look at the table and realize the 9 was hanging in the corner with BIH. I hate when I'm in a tournament and the opponent treats it as if he's playing the ghost. It's a shark move to not let your opponent get in stroke.

Larry has long been known as a highly emotional player, but one should also recognize the flip side of that coin: he is as pleased for the good as bothered by the bad...for every high, there is a low.

He can be both a PITA and a real cool guy to be around. Ya take the good with the bad.

Agree, this is super tame. Ask my stick, it's got battered spouse syndrome.
Raking the balls at first looks like an overreaction, but he only did so cuz of the hanging 9.

Beyond that, not sure I agree that this sort of thing prevents pool from getting sponsored.
Fans like to see human reactions and frustration, and sponsors understand that the occasional mild tantrum is more engaging for a spectator than a guy who just quietly sits back down.

There's some league dude, Earl Strick...something-or-other you should see that would put Nevel to shame. Doubt he has anything on YouTube, but you could try a search.

.

i actually believe that its the emotionless robot runouts that the layman who doesnt know jack about pool finds boring and clicks the channel changer. Sort of like how people who dont know anything about racing will watch the crashes on espn, or fighting in hockey, or crazy wild closers in baseball. People like to see emotion and drama. Look at earl...he always draws a crowd that sweats his matches.

One reason that professional basketball gets all that sponsorship money is because NBA players always apologize if they accidentally touch another player during a shot, or throw the ball down on the court in frustration. It happens so rarely, but if it does happen they are very apologetic about it.

I don't think I have ever seen that before, but I guess I don't watch enough basketball. :embarrassed2:

Ive seen much worse in professional pool and in professional sports with the real dollars and real sponsorships that you speak of.

This is really no big deal at all.

I agree with what others have said, and I want to point out that he went on to kick ass and win that set. Maybe the negative emotion helps some people.

But watching that makes me wonder more generally about concessions. I don't like them in tournament settings. I was at a tournament recently where the majority of final shots i saw were conceded. I know they are not permitted in BCA rules, but I've never seen it enforced.

I don't see a problem with what Larry did at all. It wasn't a shark move, he kept JA from shooting a 6 inch cheese shot...no biggie.

JAM, I suspect you haven't watched any basketball recently. ;) As for baseball, it is now commonplace for the losing manager to thank the umpires for their fine officiating, compliment them on their keen eyesight and deep understanding of the game and treat them all to dinner. Pool could learn something from basketball and baseball.

Some tournaments now play "Shoot all nines. Concede the nine and you lose the next game also." I've heard of a match in which a player conceded the nine that put his opponent on the hill. He didn't know the rule was in effect and he was a little surprised to find out. It's good to pay attention at the players' meeting.

I don't think Larry was intentionally moving on Johnny, FWIW.

Bob- you got the sarcasm pedal to the floor today!
