TAR 22 Post-Match with Earl & Joe Rogan

I couldn't disagree more.

Earl spewed a massive load of crazy BS for a very long time, and the crowd was reasonable and forgiving, and entertained, in their response. Joe responded patiently and intelligently to many things Earl said, and even complimented Earl for some of his ideas despite Earl's extreme generalizations.

Finally they invited Earl to join them for dinner and Joe offered to pay for Earl.

I think Joe should be commended for his friendly and patient treatment of Earl, not admonished for it.

Perhaps you are right and it does come down to interpretation. It may be that Joe was actually being thoughtful in how to respond to Earl but I normally judge that look as one of 'in one ear out the other'. But I don't always judge behaviours correctly so that may be my error. Body language is far from my strongest asset unfortunately :(

Despite any issues Earl is my hero I wish one day i could meet the man even if I can't get a word in edgeways :)

There's a whole lot going on in this thread.

First, repeat after me. ESPN, ABC, NBC and all the others are not Charity's. Neither are Mark Griffin, Matchroom Sports,TAR and all the other promoters. They're profit driven businesses, so can we please quit waiting for handouts and give them a product that can make them money. They make money, Earl and the others make money. Just like the real world.

As for Rogan, watch some of his podcasts or youtube vids and you realize a few things. One, he is a very rational and smart guy. He also doesn't suffer fools. I think the only reason Joe doesn't rip Earl apart is that he respects Earl as a player too much. Several times in the video you can see Joe just biting his tongue. Of course Earl makes some good points, he has to, he gives 50 different opinions in a half hour. Law of averages dictates that he's got to be right a couple times.

As for the rest of the video, it just left me confused. Earl rips on every athlete in every other sport on earth. Like really, not a single athlete has near his talent or work ethic or character. It's such an absurd statement that it's hard to take seriously. But Earl really believes it and spend half the video listing examples of people who are beneath him. Guess what, he doesn't even need to look outside the room for someone who has everything he has. SVB is just as talented, works just as hard and has yet to walk out in the middle of a t.v. final. That's real character. Hell, Rogan has managed to excel at about 5 different things in his career, but he's just a peon in Earl's world.

All in all, a good video. Well worth the half hour. Some genuinely LOL moments and quite a few WTF moments.

ETA About burning bridges with ESPN, it doesn't really matter. If pool could make ESPN millions in profit. SVB could send dirty texts too Hannah Storm and Earl could take a dump on Chris Bermans lawn. It would still get broadcast, as long as the money kept flowing.

This has went from a humorous thread into a man sitting in judgement
of the forum members. Some make it sound as if he single handedly ruined
pool. You take one of the greatest players to ever play this game and
brand him a fool. He may be a fool, but he is not a rapist nor cocaine dealer
or for that matter dog fighting. That is what we have in other major sports.
Imo the ones so perfect they can publicly throw insults and bash the man are the fools. This is not a perfect world and you can bet your a$$ the ones throwing the insults have done far worse than babble. Whats the diff in
Earl talking sh1t than these babbling fools talking just as bad or worse sh1t.
You figure it out,a spade is a spade. If he is a babbling fool then what does that make you? Either a saint or just another babbling fool

It's not as if this is one isolated incident for Earl. No human is a saint and everyone deserves a second chance. But in Earls case, he is a habitual offender of these rants against fellow players, industry leaders and even the fans. Has Earl single handedly ruined pool? No, of course not.

There is an ironic thing that happens in this society. People love a rebel, just as women love the bad boy. People love to watch a train wreck. Why? What is it that attracts people to bad behavior? Earl has developed a cult following
because of these rants and I think he knows it. If he couldn't hit a ball in a little hole, it might be a totally different story. How many people would be on his band wagon then I ask? The squeaky wheel gets the grease my friends and Earl is the squeaky wheel.

BTW, nobody claimed Earl has done anything illegal, such as dog killing. This is a ridiculous insinuation, but he is fully guilty of being a loud-mouthed, whining cry-baby and that you can take to the bank.

I love Earl as one of the best players in the game. The man does need to talk to a professional. That is my opinion witch means absolutely nothing. An for some more words of wisdom, U.S.A. pool it seems has always learned a little from the Philippines like how important kicking is an there secret in aiming, LOL. Now they came up with BIG TIME BILLIARDS, if you are reading this you know where I am coming from. Being the sponsor puts up 5 grand to the winner an 25 hundred to the loser. The hook is there are odds given an of course interest is spurred. This could be done here were gambling is promoted.I believe if done right it could be very lucrative. Sorry to ramble but just a though. Skip

I find it humorous people don't get why Michael Vick is still playing. It's simple; hero worship. When you say Jay isn't allowed to have an opinion because it might offend the tender feelings of rabid fans who will accept any behavior as long as it comes from their hero (in this case Earl) you are letting that same kind of BS slide.

There are rapists, felons, and drug addicts in pool too, and they are allowed to get off because people are too afraid to speak up. I send congratulations to Jay for being a man; having an opinion that might not go with the common vein.

Earl doesn't want your excuses or pity, he made that abundantly clear in his own words. Everyone here is a stupid fool according to Earl. Your devout worship is scorned. If you don't think so, I invite you to buy TAR 22 and have a good long listen. Better yet, pony up and attend an event where you aren't separated by 100' of space from him.

I was, like many, on his side before. The first time I met Earl I wouldn't play him because I thought he was too volatile. Then I played him a few years later and he was worse. Then I spent TAR 22 with him, not over the internet, but five feet from him.

You can make any excuse you like for Earl, that's your opinion and you are entitled to it. In the same way, Jay is allowed to stand up and say he's had enough. Just don't be shocked when one day the players get represented by a criminal who gets off scott-free because people are too afraid to say, "Hey, this is wrong". (Oh wait, that already happened!)

PS: For the ones I know read this board; keep in mind these "idiot fans" as you have called them pay your salaries. You might want to listen when they have an opinion. When you tell them they "don't know anything" don't be surprised the numbers, and thus your paychecks, dwindle.

As some of you know I do some work with Earl and book appearances, Clinics and exhibitions for him. He may have hurt himself in a number of different areas latley and It may take a little while for the effects of the TAR match to settle.

Earl called me a couple of times over Christmas asking me to book some things for him before Derby City. So I called a couple of people to see if I could get something quick for him and put a little $$ in his pocket. The first 2 people I called told me that the pool crowd were very knowlegable in that area and alot of them prob would not want any part of it after the way he acted with shane. So even though he is one of the greatest 9-ball players in history, a hall of famer who actually does a great exhibition and one of the few pro players that can actually do a good exhibition he has hurt himself with his antics.
I am not sure if he realizes what he is doing to his career. He has a golden opportunity to be able to take the following he has and the talent he has and be able to spend the rest of his days playing tourneys he wants to and doing shows etc whenever he wants to but I got to tell ya its getting harder to do.

I think I am going to call him and see if we can work on the NEW Earl and get some of the respect back that he deserves. However Earl is not happy unless he is unhappy sometimes.

If I can get him to see sense and really try to change his ways I would hope that the fans would give him a shot and get behind him. I will keep you all posted on if this looks like it will happen.

I love it! "ESPN comes in and films it, and it looks like the Bliar Witch Project." Earl Strickland

I feel the same way in many of the things Earl said here. Not everything, but that part about my sport deserving more respect.

When he said "pool is like putting in golf every time I shoot..etc.." I actually say something very similar in my exhibitions now. I say "Pool is one of the hardest things on earth. It's like playing darts, and golf at the same time...but, only the putting and bulls eye parts...The difference is I don't have to let you play at all in my sport, that is why it is harder."

People do not know mostly because their equipment is junk, and they don't get lessons about our sport in school. Most people respect other sports because they get a week's worth of lessons while going threw public schools/ or join a team in high school to letter, and possibly a scholarship. As a result of our sport not being on that list, even though it is deserving. The people that do not love pool will never get to realize our sports true potential.

To see proof of this look at the country's that do offer it as a school elective. It ends up being one of the country's best sports. Take notice in the southeast Asian country's. The reason pool is still popular and even gaining in huge strides is that is that the kids all learn about it in schools it becomes a status to obtain at a early age.

This is my 2 cents and also my company's mission in the long term. Before I die I want to see a high school kid in the USA letter from playing my sport.

You think Joe Rogan is one of the smartest men on the planet?

Let's just say he ain't no dummy! He is well read and well informed in many areas. There is a reason he is so successful in the mass media and packs houses everywhere he performs. His "act" is unlike anyone else and can be a bit cerebral at times. You can catch some of his wisdom and wit on youtube. I recommend it to you.

Oh I've seen a lot of Rogan - I'm a huge MMA fan so obviously know of him through there, and have seen a lot of interviews, clips of his standup, watched his podcasts etc.

I like him, and think he's a fairly smart guy who can be very funny off the cuff - his standup isn't my thing, but I've always found him to be amusing in social situations like the videos posted. Calling him one of the smartest humans on the planet is a massive overstatement, though, lol.

(I will add, too, that success in the mass media is hardly the best way to determine a person's intelligence.)

Loved Pool Wars, by the way.

Earl seems to think that because a sport is difficult, it's top players are entitled to something. It's a shame that there isn't more money in pool, but that's reality and all the whining in the world won't make pool more lucrative to TV networks. Also it wasn't necessary to degrade other sports and athletes to make a point about pool or himself...especially in a room full of pool fanatics!

In the last interview they asked Earl and SVB about CW coaching for Mosconi. Earl ragged on CW a bit, but SVB suggested having a celebrity coach. Point is if you really want to make a difference, then come up with some solutions and results.

I did agree with some of the things Earl said, especially about the way pool is filmed. I never got why they show closeups of the players faces while they're shooting. That drives me nuts!!

Guess I'll dissent.

Where's the fascination in a man that has blanket disrespect for those who play his sport and similarly rejects those in other sports as well as their sports? This man is mentally ill, and rather than laughing at him, I'll just wish him better times. It's sad for both him and pool when his pathetic act away from the table draws laughs.

On the table, he's one of the all time greats. Off the table, it's another story.
If reality TV's next stop is to institutionalize and capitalize on the mockery of the mentally ill, then these are sad times we live in.

Good luck, Earl, in pool and in life.

Unvarnished honesty in one's opinions and lack of tact and diplomacy aren't mental illness- only rudeness. Not that big a deal, really.
