TAR 29 Feedback: Shotclock

I watched all 3 days of TAR 29. They used a shot clock for the first time.

I thought it was an excellent addition to the match. It added an extra level of pressure to the players. From a fan standpoint, it was exciting to see if a player was having trouble with a layout and deciding what to do, if the time would run out on him.

This did happen once when Shane had BIH on the one pocket portion. He kept changing his mind if he wanted to shoot the spot shot, or a cross bank, and a foul was called.

I know this was the first event with the shot clock, and I'm certain it will improve in the future, just like every aspect of TAR has over the years. A few specific improments I'd like to see:

For the fans:

1. It would be great if there is a way to overlay the shot clock on the stream. Perhaps under the score. Also show the number of timeouts remaining for each player, like in NFL.
2. If there is not room for the shot clock all the time, maybe show it on the screen once it gets to 15 seconds or so. But, please don't reduce the size of the player's video. Instead, overlay the clock on top of it, preferably in a corner.

For the players:
1. Put a shot clock on each corner of the room, like Accustats did on the 8 ball event. Its not right for a player to have to turn around when they are not facing the clock to see what time they have available. The display that shows the time, should also show how many time outs each player has remaining.

2. If a referee is needed, or an equipment change is needed, or a bridge is needed, I feel there should be a pause in the shot clock while the player is asking for this, or going to his area to switch cues or get a bridge.

3. Please make sure everyone understands the rules, so we don't have the same thing happen where the ref erroneously called a foul on Shane when he was down on the shot. Mistakes are bound to happen, especially the first time using a new system.

Obviously many of these suggestions are technology dependent, and might not be feasible immediately.

Thanks, and good addition.

I think that if a player is going to switch to a jump cue, it should not stop the shot clock. You can ask for an extension and/or have the cue ready to go.

I don't care for the shot clock. Why does everything have to be so fast?
I felt like I didn't get my monies worth mainly because of the shot clock. And no I don't want a refund. The 8 ball match was over way too quick. Also the one pocket match would have probably been won by Shane if not for the shot clock.

When you are showing PPV and all your viewers are die hards they want to see more pool, not less. I can understand a shot clock if the match is being shown on TV where you're trying to attract the casual players and non players.

8 ball was over fast not due to the shot clock but the good players hehe.

One pocket, a shot clock in that is a bit silly, unless it's about 2 minutes long. Don't know if they had the same one for all games, but it was 45 seconds in the 10 ball match.

But you are also not seeing more pool, you are seeing them stand there thinking about the shot. You may as well ask for the racking to take longer so you get your money's worth if you just want a longer match.

Now a longer race is one thing, but just them shooting faster is not much of an issue with how much you watch. If a NASCAR race too 3 hours for 50 laps, would you rather them take 4 hours and drive slower for 50 laps?

Maybe they should have a 10 second shot clock and run to each ball. It would be faster, same amount of pool.

Could be a 4th TAR set, speed pool. 45 seconds in enough for just about any shot though. 30 seconds may be a bit fast.

I would not say that the shot clock did anything to lessen how well they played or how fast the sets took. Dropping it down to a unrealistic time does not actually make it better.

If you drove 180 everywhere you'd get there 2-3 times faster also, but it's not very practical.

Everythings fine, except the shotclock, its a joke. If they BET on the match, other then the exhibition money, I dont think they should be rushed. .Its not a tournament.

It was a great match though

how about some different commentators.Shuman and Griffin sound like 2 old whores.I really enjoyed the accu-stats 8 ball event on the 5x10. excellent commentary.

shot clock didn't do anything for me. For 99% of the shots, it wasn't a factor. For the 1% of the shots where it came into play, you feel like the guy got screwed.

Unless I saw it wrong, when there was still time on the clock 7-8 seconds and the player called an extension, the clock was immediately set to 45.

I would think that if an extension was called, it would be set to 45 after the regular time ran out.

Other than that, I am / was not a big fan of a shot clock unless Charlie is playin!!

I think a clock like a chess clock is a much better solution. The players can take as long as they want on any single shot but they have to keep up a reasonable average pace. Also, you don't need an official to run it.

....Ya, they were going at it tit for tat like brothers for a while, don't know how much of the match they actually saw, I turned on some music.

I thought both of these players could have played without a shot clock, but that's not always the case with other players.

The chess clock is an interesting proposition Bob mentioned, it works for chess. If a player shoots quickly for four shots, time is differed for them to use if needed later. I don't think any player would use more than they needed just because they had extra on the clock. What I mean to say is, players wouldn't stall just to use backlogged time.

I think they were adding 40 seconds to the time remaining on the clock when the player called an extension.

I don't like a shot clock for 1-pocket for sure. It's a shame that a game or two was decided because of it.

If they insist on a shot clock for 1-pocket, the players should be granted automatic extensions until they run out of their allotted number, not called on a shot clock violation foul. i.e. if there are 2 extensions still available and the clock runs down, they should get the extension without calling for it so they can continue thinking. The players should be told how many extensions they have available after it's used.

But I vote for eliminating it all together, at least in the 1-pocket. They should be allowed to think.

with that said, I loved the stream and this was a dream match up. Thanks TAR!

I saw the same thing on one occasion. The clock went from 7-8 seconds to 45. But then later, it was at 20 some seconds, and it went to 60 some when the extension was called. I think they were just still getting used to adjusting it.

The reason for the shot clock is consistency. In this match, the players are fast, and it doesn't really come into play (except for the one brain fart Shane had). But as you mention, if CW was playing, it would be necessary. Well, you can't have rules just for one player. This way the clock was brought in on fast players, and now TAR knows what adjustments, if any, they wish to make to it in future matches, that may feature slow players.

Best.

During the 10 ball they had 80 sec after the break, 40 on other shots an when extension was called it added 40 to whatever was on the clock

Stop clocks (15 secs, max) are a must, chess style time limits are even better.

It is a SKILL to quickly assess a table and run it. Whadda people want, Duckie to draw a diagram after every shot? Get on with it already.

Now that's funny

Wow, a very pleasurable viewing experience watching the accustats 8 ball, and then the TAR match with a shot clock.

Now, I'm watching Putnam mosey around the table on the Turning Stone hot seat match, taking TONS of time each and every shot. Are you kidding me? Shot clock forever! Gambling, tournament, or exhibition match!
