TAR 31: Shane Van Boening vs Mike Dechaine Feb. 15-17,2013

Quoting Shane...

... end of match interview " I could never catch a gear on the tight pockets, now on this table I can free stroke everything.. " I believe I got most of it right... in this format, regardless of who the players are ... is this really what everyone wants?... I know Mark G. always says fans want to see packages ... I don't really care if packages are put together .. I enjoy more "play" to the game... Below is something I posted before but I just don't understand why the need to go to tournament / standard pockets for TAR, if the format is shorter races ...

My thought is that TAR has always had something special in some way --- First was "big money" match ups that you could actually watch vs hearing about through the grapevine.

Second, the race to 100.. this was a test of endurance both mentally and physically. Add to that some serious betting and well you have something special...

When the backers dried up and long race proved to be not as marketable (viewing times were really long stretching into the early morning hours in many time zones)... races were shortened up and more of a pay to play with bonus money on the line for a win was established. So how was it special -- the equipment and environment. Similar match ups occurred outside of TAR (Busti and SVB played 10 ball either at DCC or Tunica, I would have to check the tape)(SVB and Dennis O. played at the 10 ball US Open)...

Tight table, private studio. (2 men enter, 1 man leaves , sort of thing)

So far this year I can watch from home Turning Stone for free (4.5 in pockets, did SVB play Mike D. there?... last years match is still out on uTube can see them play today on 4.5 in. pockets).. I will be watching DCC ALL WEEK ... 4.5 in pockets PLUS SOME 10 ft action! This will be on via several distributors both PPV and free.

Just a few months ago I was at the US Open... If you like watching A LOT of break and runs... it was great...

In a few months I will be able to watch the US Open 10-ball, 1 pckt and 8-ball all on 4.5 in pockets... Thanks CSI....

So for TAR ... Which I REALLY ENJOY... my question is what is so special now? The BIG Bets are gone, the table is the same as anywhere else.... The races are still longer, spread over several days and the studio is private.. is that enough to set itself apart from all the other options I have both PPV, free and previously recorded?

I am not sure... I do know I really enjoyed seeing the best in the world being tested under very difficult conditions and will miss it.

is this really what everyone wants?...

No, the poll ended at very close to 50/50 with hundreds of votes, so pretty close to as many people wanted the tighter pockets as opposed to watching TAR on a standard table.

I have zero interest in watching matches played on a standard table.

TAR was best with the Fatboy rails, not the newer 4 1/8th inch TAR rails with slightly different mitre angle because the TAR rails DID spit out too many shots down the rail due to that very slight angle change where as the Fatboy rails accepted balls down the rail properly.

TAR peaked in awesomeness in the Alex vs SVB match played on the Fatboy rails in which SVB ran 2 6 packs and a 7 pack of 10-ball on that table and neither Alex or SVB missed much the whole match.

The top pros had no issues playing top end pool on a "properly" cut 4 1/8th inch diamond such as Glen built for Fatboy, unfortunately the Diamond built 4 1/8th inch rails were slightly different and that slight difference in the pockets made a big difference in the resulting play.

And now the baby has been thrown out with the bath water.

Personally, I like seeing the pros on the 10' Diamond with normal 4 1/2" pockets. Plenty of challenge for these guys, but the pocket geometry is better suited for 2 1/4" balls. I hope the TAR studio eventually replaces this table with a Bigfoot. Until then, this table is way more exciting to watch than with the old rails.

During the last match both players looked uncomfortable. Daz looked downright frightened of it. That's no fun to watch IMO. Besides, these guys both missed shots tonight, and B&R certainly did not rule the evening.

I would like to think that Mike can put a 5 pack on, btw what kinda rack they are using ? I am guessing either the wing ball on 1 ball on the side pocket must be wired.
Magic rack but nothing was wired, like in 9 ball

Heard Dechaine was getting pissed about Shane moving in his seat while he was shooting.

If psychologists studied pool complaints, I have no doubt they would find that they are almost always subjective and intentional. If Shane were moving, it should be evident in the replays (I think one could see the sitting player), but I bet it's not true.

Iam glad i watched that podcast with jen and the boys, i never care to much for Mike D, but after watching that episode, Mike seems not to be a bad guy, he says whats on his mind!

Barretta is awesom, she speaks her mind also and is not afraid of asking any kind of questions, very very nice looking women!

The boys seem to enjoy their time with each other, boy they had me laughing a lot!

Tar is great!

Shane's break and run percentage was just shy of 45% according to that statistic. I realized while I was watching that he was running a lot of racks, but I didn't think it was close to half.

Pretty high gear play regardless of the size of the pockets.

It seemed to me Mike plays struggling patterns and every run out seemed very tough. Shane runs the balls the right way and makes it look easy. As many shots missed by Mike I'm not sure how smaller pockets would help him? I'm sure the score got in his head though and that tightened him up. Hopefully he can make it a match tomorrow, he certainly can play better and will have to if he expects to win....

Mike was full of excuses. If he noticed Shane moving, he was focusing on the wrong thing. I think he was just outplayed. Simple as that.

Mike is a (good) player & has alot of heart for getting in the cage with this gorilla..... the down side is now he's in the cage with a gorilla:cool: Simply put he's wayyyyy outta his league.

I agree, when you are making those kinda comments, you are just looking for excuses while getting beat like a teenage p@nis.

Anyone

Know if you can view the ppv stream with an iPad. I know in past you couldn't since apple doesn't support flash. Was wondering if there were any changes thiugh. Thanks
