Thank You APA

I have to admit I have contributed to APA bashing threads before, but I have also said good things about the APA in the same thread. Yes, I feel there are good and bad things about the APA. This is one of those times I have something good to say about them, so please lets not turn this into a bashing thread. There are plenty of those out there already.

We have an older gentleman on our team who has been going through Dialysis for quite some time. A couple months back he was diagnosed with cancer and now he is going through Chemotherapy as well. He is doing pretty rough and has not been to league once this session and its already week 8. Since its the beginning of the year, the $25 yearly fee is due and since his wasn't paid and he hadn't played by week 7 they removed him from our roster. Its their normal procedure to do this, which everyone knows.

Well he adores my wife and she adores him. So my wife called the league office and told them what is going on with him. She said he may not be back this session but if he does come back she wants him to be able to play even if he can't get in his minimum matches for the city tournament. She was told by one of the league assistants that they would put him back on, but his $25 had to be paid to keep him on. Say what!!!!

So last night the team was talking about it and a few wanted to chip in and pay his dues in case he came back. My thought was, how insane is this. Does the APA really need his $25 that bad, when there are a couple thousand members in this area? I know they have their rules about paying annual dues and playing by week 7, but this is a special case here. I mean, hes played APA for 20 years and this is how they treat him for his loyalty?

Well it just so happens the League Operator plays on the same night and we happened to be playing his team. Eventually the story was brought up to him, which he was unaware of, and once he heard what was going on, he said he would not only leave him on the roster, but waive the $25 annual dues.

So since I had thought about telling this story before the LO took care of things, I felt I had to tell the story once he did. Thank you APA for doing the decent thing.

Your LO probably paid the $25 bucks themselves cause they do not get any of that money, it all goes to St. Louis to the National office. Unfortuantley, the national APA office is too large to hear about stories like this so it is up to the LO to take matters into their own hands and do the right thing. Our local bar and LO has passed the hat for a member who was in a wreak, for another member who died, purchased cues for someone who was robbed, and given money to charity from tournements held. Here in the North Florida area, our APA is run correctly and my local pool hall does some really nice stuff.

",,, but waive the $25 annual dues."

The local LO didn't waive (he can't) the dues, he paid it out of his own pocket. He can do that.

Many of us do it every year for special situations that are brought to our attention. Plus contributions to local "in memory of ..." tournaments and various charity events.

And NO we don't then go around screaming about what nice guys we are - we just do it.

So basically you should be thanking the LO for ponying up the 25 and you should be saying "thanks for nothing" to the APA.......... I hope your teammate makes a full recovery and gets back to playing with you on a regular basis.

Would you mind putting a name to stand up person? Sounds like he operates an APA league that most people here would want to join and play. Compared to the tons of bad league operator stories posted here, maybe collectively, we could do something to get him recognized.

But by extension, this particular LO is the APA. If any particular LO does something that isn't thought well upon, it's always "the damned APA..." So why can't when one does something nice can't it be credited as part of the APA?

I think if you ask most LO's, they would probably all say they are part of the APA. They might not be the corporate part of it, but they most certainly are APA...

Well, I'm not one for putting out people's names on here, but since from some of my posts you can tell I am from Raleigh, and the first Google search result for "APA Raleigh league operator" has his name I guess I will make an exception. His name is Marc Lancaster.

I wasn't aware that he paid it himself, but I guess that makes sense where the money goes to HQ.

I couldn't agree more, Justadub...

The person in front of the customer is representing the company.

In this case it's the LO.

However anyone wants to slice it, the LO did a good thing.

I feel bad for the guy, and no one should have to suffer the way he is, but your appreciation is slightly missplaced.

Your League Operator should be thanked, not the APA as a whole. They still wanted his $25, remember?

Slightly off-topic, but I am TOTALLY digging your avatar!

Marc sounds like a nice guy. I wouldn't be surprised to see a post or two about moving to Raleigh North Carolina.

Apa ?

Unfortunately for ALL APA league players throughout the U.S. (and perhaps Japan and Canada), the $$$ come 1st !
The LO compassionately came out of his own pocket to pay the $25 APA league annual dues and he is to be commended.

Not the money grubbing National APA !!!

Last session, my team was in a league division playoff, we won the match over the other team. I was called
3 days later and told that our team forfeited the winning match because our payment envelope was $4 short !!! No appeal, I was not allowed to go and give them the $4 immediately! Our team was out of the playoffs...period !
What compassion is THAT ! mistake made ?

I understand your point and yes the LO is the main one the thanks goes to. Perhaps the APA main office should have the compassion my LO does. As Justadub said though, the "APA Organization" is downed and dissed for every bad move a LO out there makes, so I feel the APA should be praised when a LO makes a good move.

I think any situation where a L.O. comes to the benefit of his players is fantastic.

My question to you is? How do you know the APA would not have done anything about it. No one even mentioned the situation to the National Office (based on what has been posted in this thread). How would you expect them to have a chance to show some goodwill and possibly give put a free membership when they are unaware of the situation.

I guess that is just your way of bringing negativity to a postive thread.

Kudos to the L.O. for taking care of his members.

Doesn't matter what league. Pay with a check or money order. That way the envelope will never be light...

NEVER pay with cash. Leave a paper trail next time.
