Thank you Jay Helfert for releasing an ultra valuable pool secret in one of your recent posts. I forgot which thread. Folks, "its" worth searching for. You dropped it so nonchalantly that many many have missed it. "It" was told to me 40 years ago and I had forgotten "it" for the last 30. I've been doing "it" totally wrong for the last 20. Mataya was a master at "it." He would push out for long shots off the rail. I got on the table today and began using "it" to maximum effectiveness immediately. Curious? It's Jay's thing so I leave it up to him if he wants to re release.

Guys Freddie gives a slight hint at what kind of tip Jay gives. I read it just earlier today and thought 'WOW' I have never been told that.

I haven't had time to check it but I am sure it works.

OK OK OK...(Freddie if you don't mind here)......the tip is the tip.

WHAT you say????

When shooting at the cueball frozen to the rail, aim at the end of the cushion where the CB meets the cushion to keep from miscueing on shots.

Someone posted in a thread regarding the cushion height on a Diamond and Jay gave some feedback.

REP PLEASE!!! LOL

Gary

edit:did seem as clear reading as when I wrote it!! maybe its better now!

just a little reminder

Just a little reminder that the surface of our tip is curved. What Jay said is one part of the equation, shooting with confidence is another. Many folks let the idea of a long shot off the rail beat them. Shooting some prop shots with the cue ball frozen on the rail at one end of the table is a good way to find out in a hurry who has a straight stroke and knows where the center of the cue ball really is.

Barber, I don't know anything that you don't already know, so quit playing dumb. :D
In fact I'd like to know half what YOU know about pool. Da dum!!!

I got a great defensive trick that may come in handy for u one day....
We all have been to battle at one time or another with the old tap the object ball to the rail leaving the cue ball as close to it as possible as does your opponent right? Eventually the cb get very close to the object ball and then you think dang! i got to shoot away from it now....
Here is a tip for u next time....Assuming the object ball is not frozen to the rail, lay your cue down on the table and slide it under the cb as close as you can....then grab your shaft and simply pull straight up just nipping the cb and making the ob kiss the rail...
Many of you probably knew this move but after 10 years of playing this game i still have alot to learn....

That neat little "trick" is now a foul in the WPA Rule Book.....SPF=randyg

plan "B"

Unless I am mistaken you can still hit the cue ball in the same place at almost a complete right angle and nudge it over as long as the ferule or shaft doesn't make contact. Gets the same job done.

There's a way to do this that isn't a foul. I'll try to explain.

Lay your cue on the table in line with the shot/hit you want to make on the cue ball. Now take your thumb and index finger and grip the shaft about one and half to two inches behind the tip. The rest of the cue remains lying on the table. Pick up the shaft with your two fingers (Thumb and index) and use your other fingers (same hand) to support your hand on the table. Now move the tip close to the cue ball and gently make your shot. Practice this a few times and you will have it. You won't foul this way. Totally legal and very doable!

Once again, you're sworn to secrecy!

P.S. This shot can be done with the shaft only as well, when there isn't room to lay your entire cue on the table. Remember, SHHHH!

Thanks again Jay=)

hmmm... I mean i have used the tip of my cue, just like the rules say and made a legal hit without double tapping it....How could it be a foul???

My shot is a little different then the one you described. In making my shot you do not have to lay the tip under the cue ball. You actually shoot (using your two fingers to hold the shaft) from a distance of less than an inch from the cue ball.

P.S. Were you in Fayettevile last week for the Players Championship? If not, shame on you. You missed a good one in your neck of the woods.

I think this neat little "shot" is only a foul if the cue is used for aligning a shot and your hand is removed from the cue when it is laying on the table.

Can you specify the rule you refer to in the WPA Rule Book?
Thanks,
JoeyA

I was begging to go but my job is holding me back from these things... I was hoping you had a secret about how to never miss a ball or get out of line so i could quit this paint business and knock off all these champions...lol!! If i figure it out b4 u do i'll send u a pm...

I love this place. Jay, you rock.

I learned two shots in this one thread. I immediately went to the table to try them both out.... I really like the bump shot. That's going to be a winner.

Your advice on shooting off the rail is well taken Jay. However, this latest advice appears to be another gimmic to get around the rules that each of us should respect.

It just seems to me that pool in the U.S. (unlike snooker in Europe) still remains a hustler's game with gimmics and tactics that give it a bad name. I can't imagine a snooker player trying something like that.

But maybe I'm wrong! Just an opinion though. Thanks for all your advice and knowledge of the game, especially one pocket.

I refuse to play patty-cake...

on the rail. I haven't played a long time and have only seen it a few times. If 2 players do this patty-cake tap dance expertly, can't it theoretically go on forever? That ain't pool in my book and I call

Poppy-Cosh!

(I gotta go try this tip though)

edited to acknowledge the ingenuity behind the tip and not come off like a bah humbug since I don't know how to bring about the "end game" of playing what I call patty cake
