The AZ Room @ The Derby City Classic

Maybe that's what's been wrong with me.

I would've felt sorry for you and I did feel sorry for you until I saw that you're going on a cruise.... ;)

LOL, the nervous need not apply! I can just see some poor soul that actually has a decent game getting up on the tv table with the Breedlove's and having their knee's wobble and all the balls they hit going into the rails instead of the pockets. :D
I think you found my problem, but I don't want to fix it now. I've been so nervous the last couple of years that I started shooting balls into the rail. So I signed up for the bank tournament and it worked out perfect. I wondered why I couldn't win those 9-ball tournaments and everyone was making fun of me banking 4 or 5 balls every game. It seems so natural. I'm ready to play some now though. Sam:rolleyes:

Has there been any more talk about a $ match between Danny & Gabe. That could be great for this room if it is a race.

TY & GL
I havent heard anything more. I spoke with Danny and he said he would love to play Gabe again. Let me know if anyone wants to bet on Gabe and we can make some arrangements.

Since I'm playing in events the whole time

Actually, someone came up with a pretty good idea:

What if we divided the whole tournament into 6 hour blocks, then we would only need 28 volunteers to do a 6 hour stretch, then make the schedule ahead of time so everyone would know when their shift was.

I will do a couple of stretches. Grady's delightful wife Randi has volunteered to spend some quality time there, probably a shift or two or three. This really sounds feasible. We could make a schedule; then first come, first serve on filling the slots. I think from what I have seen so far that most of the slots would fill (we could close the room during times when no one signed up). This would pretty much relieve SemperFi from key duty; it could just be passed along.

I like it - what do you guys think (I'll volunteer to do the scheduling if we think this is a good idea).
I can't commit to any time but will be happy to come down and do some time as a relief person for maybe an hour at a time. It's just hard to say what time my matches will be right now. Sam

If I am able to attend I most certainly would help ,I am not in any events ,I am only driving down with my BCA buddies to be at the AZB to meet everyone , I am hearing that the BCA event is being held at another Executive hotel somewhere close ??

Ratchet - works cheap ,didnt someone mention food ??? lol

Wireless internet...good question ??

Do you know if there is an internet connection (or wireless) in that room?

Most major hotels now have wireless ,but it would be nice to know ahead of time
My laptop has wireless capabilities also which I also would have on hand,Maybe OHB or Willie can ask ahead of time ??

He hit the balls real well against me. Freddy, I used to watch you and Grady play One Pocket over at Joe Burns Place in Dayton,Ohio. Forest Park Billiards in the early 80's. What a great tournament and esecially the pay-ball game on the snooker table. I didn't know much about One Pocket at that time, but I loved watching all you guys play. I hope I get the chance to hit a few balls with you at the DCC. Bank on Freddie,, Sam

Here is the official scoop so far

This is also posted in the main forum. See the monitoring changes; we now have things covered from noon to MN; we only need volunteers for the shifts from MN to noon.

Assuming our pledged money will arrive, we will have a private AZB room at DCC this year; which will have a private, non-coinop, 9ft. table for the round-the-clock enjoyment of the contributors. A $20 donation gets you playing privileges on the table. Non-contributors may also get in the room for watching or socializing, but they must let me know ahead of time so I can get them on the list (or seek me or OldHasBeen out at the tournament and we will get you on the list, and get you a pass into the room). To play, however, requires an advance contribution - PM me soon if you are interested.

When the pro's are there, the table will be a "challenge the pro" table. When they are not there, it will be a challenge table with a list (#1 plays #2, then #2 plays #3, then #3 plays #4, and so on), so unless the room is empty, no one will be playing more than 2 matches in a row. The games will be 9ball race to 3, onepocket race to 2, straight pool to 60 points, full rack banks race to 1, short rack banks race to 2. The player "at the table" decides on which of the games will be played. Wagers will be whatever the 2 players agree on, but $5, $10, and $20 wagers are encouraged.

Things are progressing well. We have commitments from Sarah Rousey, Linda Carter, and Mike Zimmerman to do an hour of challenges apiece. We have a commitment from Jeanette Lee to play the winner of our raffle. If she can convince her husband to play, we will have 2 raffle winners to pair up with the pro's in a doubles match instead - possibly on the television table (Greg Sullivan definitely wants this match to occur in the main tournament room). We have a commitment from Grady Mathews to do a one hour seminar.

We are definitely required to have room monitors, so each day will be split into 4 shifts (MN to 6 AM, 6 AM to noon, noon to 6 PM, 6 PM to MN), starting at MN on the first Friday. Randi Mathews will be doing ALL the noon to 6 PM shifts. Semperfi will keep the key at his booth for all of the 6 PM to MN shifts - contributors may sign out the key for as long as they like, but they are monitoring the room while they have the key. This means we have most of the tournament-viewing time covered, and we only need volunteers for the 12 hour period from MN to noon - which is PRIME ACTION TIME at DCC. I'm doing MN to 6 AM on Thurs, and 6 AM to noon on the last Friday. Players that can't do a whole shift should plan on relieving Randi occasionally, or pairing up with another person to split a shift (please do it by PM between yourselves - I don't think I can juggle it, just let me know when it is accomplished). I'll post a preliminary schedule on Tuesday, then people can PM me with their choices and I will continuously update the post in a visible fashion.

We're not yet sure we have any extra funds for refreshments.

I will be providing official nametags which you can pick up at the room. It will list your real name and your screen name; and it will serve as your admission ticket to the room and the table. NO ONE PLAYS WITHOUT AN OFFICIAL NAME TAG (unless he's a pro, or unless he's bigger and tougher than zeeder or OHB ). The room monitor will have the nametags, and can give you yours if you have proper ID. For those that haven't been, the DCC gives you a picture I.D./pass that has your real name printed prominently on it; so it's no big invasion of privacy for us to do the same.

Members planning on socializing (and not contributing) should let me know, and I will get them a non-player nametag.

We have collected only $995 so far, so keep those cards and letters coming. So far payment has been received from:

Ratchet -

I just called the Executive West and they said they have wireless Internet access in all of the sleeping rooms and the lobby. They said the conference rooms, etc. do not have wireless Internet access or even wired Internet access for that matter (unless you go through a phone line I suppose).

So, I think this means that the AZ room may not have wireless Internet access unless it is close enough to a WIFI spot in the hotel. I'm hoping the AZ room will be close enough though.

It doesn't seem to me, that it was very far from the lobby. How far is too far, as WIFI is concerned?

Tracy

WIFI hotspots vary, but I'd say 50 feet could bump you out of signal range. I guess we could always go to someone's room to post to AZB.

Sami,
The AZ room is not too far from the lobby, I would think there is a good chance it will work. When I go down there the first Friday, I'll take a laptop and try out the wireless.

More updates

Another update (please see the non-sticky DCC update thread in the main forum if you are interested in the full version).
Changes are:

George Breedlove and Jeanette Lee have both agreed to play the 2 lucky AZB members who win our raffle. We'll try to get Jeanette and George to pick their respective partners out of a hat. I will tell you now that I may buy several tickets, so no snide remarks if I win (well, actually snide remarks are okay, just don't hurt me - we can always hire Price Waterhouse to monitor the raffle if you don't trust me, but I would probably just try to bribe them). I am anticipating only selling 20-30 chances for $20 apiece. First come, first serve.

Sizl's banner is complete; a fabulous donation to the cause - hooray for Sizl.

Another member is trying to get Charlie Bryant to play an hour of challenges; or at least stop by.

We are seeking approval to raffle or give away as a prize a case from a MAJOR maker, possibly customized with a "DCC 2006" theme.

I just spoke to Hillbilly on the phone and he said he would stop by any time we wanted and would contribute what he could.
Now, Hillbilly has asked me to deliver a message to all at AZ;
He stated that this has been a tough year for him. He lost his mother to a long illness a few months ago and has had to take some time to deal with it.
Hillbillly is a people person and loves the crowds and says he would like to apologize. It's just been tough.
Also his computer blew and he getting a new one and will back online with "ask the Pros" very soon.
My personal response is, take it easy. You owe no apology. Do what is best for you. LJ

I'm pretty sure I can arrange for Danny DiLiberto and John Brumback to drop by for little while. Maybe some challange matches and and a few pointers. Maybe even be a few other players, possibly Earl, if i catch him in a good mood.

Hmmmm.
Maybe a little one pocket exibition match between Freddy and Danny D. could be put together. That could be entertaining!

just more hot air!

At the Glass City Open this year I watch many players take time out to speak with fans that approached them. Of particular note was "Hillbilly". Everytime somebody approached him, Charlie took the time to look them in the eye and speak to them with respect, answering any questions posed to him and offer advice when solicited. I have always respected his game, after watching him in the GCO, The Hillbilly earned my respect for beign a decent person.

When I met Hillbilly the first time last year at the DCC, he seemed like a very personable person. He's one of those people you look forward to seeing and saying "hello" to at these type of events. Can't wait to see him as well as everyone else. Only 2 weeks away.............
