The AZ Room @ The Derby City Classic

Timberly,
Okay, I've pencilled you in for the midnight to 6 slot the first 6 days.:) :)

Just kidding. You are not obligated in ANY way to monitor - your only obligation is to enjoy yourself!!!! You actually have a real job, the rest of us will pick up the slack.
Thx WBM... I'm still going to offer whoever is on duty a break when I'm in the room. We all need to share in responsibilities. Besides, if I can be the "forum police" (according to certain trolls) then I should have no problem keeping order. :D

FWIW, a number of others are 'cross-overs' :)

Twelfthofadozenpocket,
Just to clarify: I wasn't implying that the onepocket.org contributions were in any way less important than AZB - I lurk over there as well. In addition to the guys we know, there are others I have found that have a different screen name on onepocket.org. I only mentioned the numbers because someone asked. This whole thing has a significant level of complexity that I won't be spending too much time on a statistical analysis of relative contributions - I just want to get in some pool.

Okay, I have had good feedback on the scheduling idea.

Shifts will be in six hour intervals starting at midnight on the first Friday (I'll try to get there Friday afternoon to get things started, and stay there until midnight - guess I'll sleep in the car). Since Randi Mathews will probably be doing several shifts we want to give her priority to choose; but we will try to give people their first choice if possible.

Just let me know which shift you'd like to sign up for - I'll work on having a schedule posted early next week so people can look at it as it fills up.

I will also mention that I will try to provide color commentary for ongoing matches in the room when I am "on duty" (at least until the participants tell me to shut the hell up). It's a tradition in Betmore's Basement; and I'm rarely threatened with bodily harm more than once or twice a week. Heck, maybe I should bring a microphone, or perhaps one of those really annoying bullhorns.

For the scheduling impaired, the 4 shifts each day are:

Midnight to 6 A.M.
6 A.M to noon
noon to 6 P.M
6 P.M. to midnight

If you want to split a shift with a friend that may also be possible - I'm just too confused right now to think through all the ramifications.

Okay, how cool is this???? Randi Mathews has offered to take the noon to 6 P.M. shift EVERY DAY. For people that can't/won't do a whole 6 hours, perhaps they could give Randi a break occasionally. Anyway, she's my new hero.

I have no problem volunteering relief for a few hours at a time once or twice. I just don't want to snooze a match because of it. I'll be there for the duration so I'll mention this to Randi WBM or whoever when I'm there.

Sounds like a good idea. The shifts are a bit long though perhaps, but maybe there will be more volunteers once everything gets situated. I guess my main concern would be being stuck on shift with no one showing up and no way to get some food. Hopefully that wouldn't happen though.

Maybe four hour shifts would be more viable? This would only add two additional shifts, but then again, maybe six hours is fine since once you're in the room you may never want to leave! ;)

My thanks to Randi as well!

I truly believe that there will be plenty of volunteers. Especially ones willing to hang around for an hour or so in order to let someone go get something to eat or catch their friend/loved in a match. I really think the watch dog duty will play out easier than most people think. :)

Randi, you've made a very gracious offer. Thank you.

Sami,
I wouldn't worry. The monitor has the key to the room. If the room is empty and you need to go somewhere, just lock it up. For trips to the restroom or snack bar, just go; whoever is playing at the table can watch the room.

I don't foresee any great responsibility for the monitor - just hang out, play pool, socialize, notify management in case of disaster. I'm hopeful that EVERYONE will respect the "rules of the room" once posted - they are essential if we are to be asked back next year.

Also, it's hard enough getting 28 volunteers, I think 4 hour shifts is just too much work for me to find people. Also I think people will like a 6 hour block of matching up with new people.

I'll post the schedule later today, and people can let me know which shift they want. We already have 10 of the 28 shifts filled.

This is the beauty of having only the people that have paid for the room being allowed to play. There's always going to be more than one person (unless it's empty) in the room that can be a designated monitor. Guard duty isn't going to be as grueling as it sounds. ;)

The people that are going to be in this room are mostly people that have A) paid for it and B) love and respect the game. People are constantly complaining on here about the rude, disrespectful behaviour of others in their pool room. I have faith in this group and I know that they'll not only conduct themselves as adults but that the "monitor" will not feel any pressure. Running to the bathroom or the snack bar should not be a problem. It's not like a child daycare where you absolutely can't leave the kids alone without another person in there. Have faith folks... it'll work and it'll run smoother than you think. ;)

I can cover a chunk of the morning hours -- maybe 9-noon -- for about 5-6 of the days I'll be there. The 6AM to 9 would be tough :)

Do you know if there is an internet connection (or wireless) in that room?
If so, I will have a laptop there, which I would be willing to share for posting by fellow members -- or assistance with new registrations to both AZ and/or 1P.org.

I am playing in all three tournaments so I can't say when I can watch the room for an extended period of time but I will know more when I see my schedule of matches. I am also playing in the bca eightball the first weekend upstairs.

Jeanette Lee has committed to the raffle idea. She will try to talk George into the doubles idea. I'll start the raffle on the first day, the match will probably be Thursday or Friday. If we get both pro's, then it will be doubles with 2 raffle winners; if not, just a singles match. We are checking into getting this match on the television table. I'll keep you posted.

Crap!!

I screwed around too long to make airline changes:o . I was going to stop in DCC on a long layover returning to Alaska from a cruise out of Florida. Well I just checked and the change now is over $800 which makes it cost prohibitive. Have fun folks. Keep the $$ Willie.

Cheers

I would've felt sorry for you and I did feel sorry for you until I saw that you're going on a cruise.... ;)

LOL, the nervous need not apply! I can just see some poor soul that actually has a decent game getting up on the tv table with the Breedlove's and having their knee's wobble and all the balls they hit going into the rails instead of the pockets. :D

Derby Update

Things are progressing well. We have commitments from Sarah Rousey, Linda Carter, and Mike Zimmerman to do an hour of challenges apiece. We have a commitment from Jeanette Lee to play the winner of our raffle. If she can convince her husband to play, we will have 2 raffle winners to pair up with the pro's in a doubles match instead - possibly on the television table. We have a commitment from Grady Mathews to do a one hour seminar.

We are definitely required to have room monitors, so each day will be split into 4 shifts (MN to 6 AM, 6 AM to noon, noon to 6 PM, 6 PM to MN), starting at MN on the first Friday. Randi Mathews will be doing ALL the noon to 6 PM shifts. I'm doing MN to 6 AM on Thurs, and 6 AM to noon on the last Friday. Players that can't do a whole shift should plan on relieving Randi occasionally, or pairing up with another person to split a shift (please do it by PM between yourselves - I don't think I can juggle it, just let me know when it is accomplished). I'll post a preliminary schedule on Tuesday, then people can PM me with their choices and I will continuously update the post in a visible fashion.

We're not yet sure we have any extra funds for refreshments.

I will be providing official nametags which you can pick up at the room. It will list your real name and your screen name; and it will serve as your admission ticket to the room and the table. NO ONE PLAYS WITHOUT AN OFFICIAL NAME TAG (unless he's a pro, or unless he's bigger and tougher than zeeder or OHB:) ). The room monitor will have the nametags, and can give you yours if you have proper ID. For those that haven't been, the DCC gives you a picture I.D./pass that has your real name printed prominently on it; so it's no big invasion of privacy for us to do the same.

Members planning on socializing (and not contributing) should let me know, and I will get them a non-player nametag.

We have collected only $650 so far, so keep those cards and letters coming. So far payment has been received from:

It ain't much but...

I will split the 6-12 PM shift on the last Fri. I would prefer to do 6-9. I hope this helps and someone volunteers to do the second half of the shift. Glad you received my check and hope the rest of the $ rolls in soon. Thanks again for all the work you have put in.

Don,

I'll do a stretch as hall monitor. Anytime that I'm not playing in the tournament will be OK. Just let me know if you need me.

Mike

Willbetmore: schedule

Glad to see the pony express delivered the scratch.
I am unsure of my exact travel plans, may come to either weekend, or both.
Happy to pull a shift, just not sure when yet.

Don
