The best ever.... Period

You know we all are getting old fast, when a lot of the great pool players that we either played or heard a lot about in the pool world .

They are leaving us at such a fast pace and all the great pool halls are also dying or closed.

What a shame to hear about ANDAM !

Andam I hope things turn for the best of you, you treated this man with the best pool I ever seen, even know you beat my man, I still enjoyed everything you did that nite, you were the best!

Sadly, Leonardo Andam was killed in a motorcycle accident in May of this year.

... Last time I saw Andam here in the PI he was down and out, substance abuse I was told. He was scuffling around in the dingy little poolrooms in Pasay City. Kind of sad for one of the greatest Filipino players. He was ranked number three after Efren and Parica at his peak.

Jay, he's no longer with us. He passed away in a motorcycle accident this May.

Yeah, he was a world beater.

Sad.

Motorcycles are dangerous.

I remember reading that thread and thought there were some that said it was a rumor / not true but I didn't keep up with it so it is for sure true then?

Bathroom

So J & J only had two small, ratty, little bathrooms. This story is in regards to the men's room. They had old, residential toilets. For a while it was the house man's job to go in the men's room once it would start to get a little crowded and remove and hide the tank lid of the toilet. Reason - it would get used too much and if there were more than 10-15 people in the joint the bathroom would remain locked and occupied pretty much the whole time and no guys could take a leak lol. Come the next morning 8 9 10, maybe afternoon lid would be replaced. This didn't last that long and they ended up just 86 the tank lid altogether. Nice!

I will check this out today. I'm here in the Philippines now. Just heard back from Dennis Orcollo. Yes, it's true, Andam is no longer with us.

Thank you Jay as you ARE the man that can tell us! Could u PLEEEZE give one more J&J for our readers to enjoy tonight? We both know there ARE THOUSANDS from this place but ur the man and have great stories. Btw, I have a real good friend that PI ( nothing really to do with pool ) and he goes back once a year and has been begging me to go with him for 10 years plus and I have not but really want to. May I contact you when I do go for advice or whatever?

Sure, you'd love it! Alex told me once that if I go to the PI, I will go back. He was right, about 30 trips now and counting!

Did you know that Onifrio Lauri won a major 9-Ball tournament at J&J around 1969. All the top guns were there; Kelly, Richie, Ronnie, Jersey Red, Cornbread, Shorty, Ervolino, Richie Ambrose, New York Blackie, etc. Lauri was 69 years young when he won it! Pretty strong in my book.

Not to be a Captain-know-it-all - but you are talking about the "real" J&Js in a suburb
of DC(I knew which one once upon a time).

These guys are talking of a much later room in Glen Burnie - a sub of Baltimore.

The old Bill and Billie's - renamed by Cliff Macklin when he took over in the early 90s.
Sorta a 'tribute cue' of poolhall names.

So, anybody else familiar with how Cliff "acquired" such a goldmine?

...JAM; I know uve been on vacation but if u would; if for nothing other than in respect for what J&J meant to pool please add WHATEVER U LIKE DEAR! ( J&J has its own chapter in playing off the rail ). Thank yall but this is what got me hooked!

An AzB-er let me know about this thread. Just read it this morning and felt compelled to chime in, though hesitantly, to add a few factoids.

There are two Jack and Jill pool rooms. One was in Arlington, VA owned by Weenie Beenie, and the other one was located in Glen Burnie, Maryland, which later -- not sure when -- two separate "Jack and Jill's."

I was a young girl when Jack and Jill's pool room in Arlington, VA was in full swing. When I was about 12, my girlfriend and I got the nerve to enter the front door of Jack and Jill's in Arlington, VA. It was dark, smokey, and all men. We left quickly, as it felt uncomfortable to us as 12-year-olds.

I was very familiar with Weenie Beenie's hot dog stands, which at that time were located all throughout Northern Virginia. In fact, there still remains one Weenie Beenie hot dog stand in Arlington, Virginia, and it receives high reviews by the patrons who go there today ---> Weenie Beenie's Sandwich Shop.

Jack and Jill's in Glen Burnie, MD (aka Bill and Billie's) was where the action was in Maryland for as long as I can remember, though the good action did not start until after midnight when all the bars closed. Everyone would drive to Glen Burnie, MD in a convoy to get in on the action. Every table was going, usually from the likes of Geese (of course), Bus Driver Ronnie, Newports (father and son, though the son was kicked out at midnight and had to wait outside), Boggs brothers (Scottie and Freddy), Timmy Crown and Stuey, Quick Vic and Bobby Hawk, Sterling, Reggie, Buck, Fat Wayne, Piano Man, White Max, and I'm sure I'm missing quite a few at the time of this writing.

Jack and Jill's in Glen Burnie back in the day had its own soda fountain with home-made delicacies. I remember being fond of the tuna fish sandwiches and fresh apple pie. They always had a pot of fresh coffee going. During the day, a group of regulars, mostly old-timers, would congregate at the soda fountain until noon, studying the Racing Form, and then off they went to Pimlico or Laurel, wherever the horses were running live. Hi, ho, Pimlico!

Jack and Jill's in Glen Burnie, MD was not as well known as the Jack and Jill's in Arlington, VA, but make no mistake about it, it was probably one of Maryland's top action pool rooms, bar none. And I've been to all of them. :grin-square:

If you hadn't even been to Jack and Jill's in Glen Burnie, MD, you'd never know it was there. It was located in the back of a warehouse district strip, kind of similar to the location of Drexeline Billiard Club in Drexel Hill, PA, for those who have been there. Not much signage. Jack and Jill's in Glen Burnie, MD, much like the one before its time in Arlington, was on every road player's TripTik. Word of mouth among the road agents spread fast that this was *the* place to get in action, and there was action galore in the '80s.

Like most pool spots in America, the pool rooms in Maryland because to decline in popularity beginning in the '90s and early 2000s. Though the movie "The Color of Money" did keep pool alive and well for many pool enthusiasts, giving pool a so-called "boon," the pool room owners couldn't turn a profit due to high rents, smoking bans, and lack of interest in playing pool. :(

I have several thoughts as to why pool took a nosedive in America in the '90s,but that's not what this thread is about. I myself took a hiatus from pool, much like I do from this forum from time to time, but my hiatus from pool was to work on my career.

After being away from pool for a couple decades, I was plunged back into it after meeting Keith, much to my surprise. I had been out of the pool circuit for a long while, but I had remembered Jack and Jill's in Glen Burnie, MD, which was named Bill and Billie's, so I took Keith there, hoping he'd get played. With the advent of the Internet, cell phones, and communications technology in general, the entire action pool-playing population of Maryland was well aware of Keith's presence before we even stepped foot in the door. :o

I remember Danny Green walked up to Keith and mentioned that he, too, was in the book "Playing Off the Rail," as if it was some kind of bond the two of them shared.

Then Danny pulled me off to the side, alone, and gave me a gentle warning about Keith McCready, as he knew Las Vegas Keith, the one who had a different lady on each arm every time Danny saw him. Scotty Boggs, before he moved to Vegas, also advised me to be careful with Keith McCready, a man who gambled high stakes. These were just friends looking out for me, and I am fortunate that the Keith McCready I ended up with is a man with a good heart who has brought me much joy in my life.:smiling-heart:

My, how times have changed for pool. Yes, there's still action, but these action-by-appointment challenge matches just don't seem to have the same excitement, at least for me. Pool rooms like Jack and Jill's in Arlington, VA and Glen Burnie, MD are now mere memories, good memories. Thanks for the thread. :)

He brokered a back door deal with the property owner.

Previous owner moved to Annapolis area when he lost his lease.

Real dirty dude. He could not use the bill and billies name owned by Ed the owner. He then choose jack and Jills.

ED Sakanis (spell) was the owner before Cliff.

Ed was a very strick man, he would not allow any cussing or clowning around, Ed ran a very tite ship!

Ed played very good pool also, he won a Maryland state tournament, I forget the year.

HI JAM! Im glad U chimed in, I was hoping you would. With the risk of sounding like a broken record please feel free anytime to tell some of your stories - I just love them as im certain many, many others do as well.

Btw, Fat Wayne told me to tell you hi next time I talked to you so - HI!

You mentioned Mike Newport having to go outside after 12, well guess I was kinda lucky cause I had been going in there since I was 13 and they never asked me to leave and im guessing the only reason was that I was always in somekinda action. With that being there were a handful of times the cops came in looking for this or that fugitive and kicked me out. One time they did this made me sick. Think I was 15, playing on the barbox by the front door race to 7 for $400. The money was on top of the light, hill hill with breaking - cops came in and apparently it was time for me to go. Couldn't ask them to wait 2 mins cause we had $800 in the light lol so guy I was playing just says sorry forfeit. Was a tough crowd in there. Oh well.

To this day I can still hear and see Geese saying to me - HEY KID LET ME GET A SMOKE FROM YA! It took him a few years for him to either remember my name or to use it lol. I loved that guy. After getting to know me for a few years he actually worked with me on learning one pocket in the down times. I attribute my one hole game to him. I know there are plenty of champion one hole players then and now but he will always be " The Best Ever........Period to me. He was quick to let anyone know - he was 3rd best in the world---- what u wanna do!

I think a big part of the charm of J&J was the remoteness of the location. It def allowed alot of what went on to go on. You made that turn off of route 3 into the industrial complex and you KNEW u were entering a diff world!

Jam how many times did you hit " the honey bee"?

The convoy thing was pretty funny to me but absolutely accurate. There were always the people coming from Frederick, Dc, VA, and down from PA - DE too if ya count Red Head Jeremy ( RIP ) more or less on a daily basis.

One last thing Jam, No big deal at all but I want to say something about Keith. Im quite certain he would never remember this of course but this is from the Tues night tourney at the old Champions in Laurel. I of course knew who he was from the movie and what not but haf never run across him for whatever reason. Well one night there , I bought him a beer and went over to him to introduce myself and tell him what a fan I was. He was as nice as anyone could ever be, seriously. Talked with me for a bit about the movie and pool in general. Great guy!

Thanks Jay! When my PI friend had me over his house they always put a feast together " supp as in honor of guest " and it is ALWAYS the best eats I've ever had - rabbit and this and that and my ALL TIME FAVORITE - LUMPIA ???? Anyway its awesome. I hunt, i fish - alot. My most treasured piece ( pool, hunting, or fishing ) is a real bamboo fishing rod from PI that i was given!

Yes you are correct KD, Cliff was the dirtiest. A friend of ours Phily Man wants we to say hi to you and PD. THANKS BRO

So are there any folks out there that remember a guy named " Squirrel " that used to hang in Jack & Jills when he was not in Florida? He was very good friends with Fat Wayne. This guy could not play a lick, he was a consistent 3 ball runner but he did gamble believe it or not. ANY, and I mean ANY stories about this guy would be great! Once you hear ANY story about Squirrel you prob are gonna say to yourself " there is absolutely NO WAY that can be true " but let me assure everyone that its prob 99.99999% chance no matter how crazy the story is that it will be 100% accurate. This guy was just flat out off the hook! He was also the guy that would always be playing Gin with Fluffy ( Lionel ) of that helps spark any memories.

lionel, (hightop) is this the same person Roger, if so I use to see him every time I went to the trotters.

I seen Squirrel once at Ocean Downs, as I was coming inn, he was being escorted out!

Yeah Rich, guess your right most prob knew Lionel by Hightop although us Regulars in there always called him Fluffy ( still referring to his haircut lol ) . Far as Squirrel that sounds about right. Quick story bout Squirrel, he was without a doubt one of the most loudmouth, smack talker anywhere - keeping in mind what I said earlier about how horrible he played. Guess it was the early nineties, he was playing $5 8 ball on the front table. He had an 8 about 8-10 inches from the pocket with cue ball maybe a foot away from that ( maybe a little less ) . In typical Squirrel fashion steady running his mouth he announces to the whole room " I SWEAR TO MF'ING CHRIST IF I DONT MAKE THIS 8 MAY HE STRIKE ME DEAD ON THIS VERY SPOT!!!! " Well he shoots the 8 ball, missing by a good 6 inches. He walked to one side of the pool room, just put his head down screaming at the top of his lungs the whole time and runs FULL SPEED to the opposite side of the room ( still with his head down ) and slams his head right into the cinder block wall head first and instantly knocks himself clean out. It was extremely violent and everyone thought he was dead. Well he in fact did not die, but did give himself one heck of a concussion. More Squirrel stories to come, anyone else have any Squirrel stories? And oh yeah, you would NEVER see Lionel without his racing form - he loved them ponies. I saw him walking down the hwy couple years ago and last I heard he was hanging out at the senior center everyday with Cowboy Bob robbing all those seniors lol :)

squirrel was a squirrel, but in a good way, I never heard of him bothering anyone , except himself ofcourse.

Eugene and Squirrel matched up a few times, Squirrel played so bad Eugene robbed him!
