The Cue Club and Best Billiards -- A Brief Tale of Two Las Vegas Pool Rooms

I didn't hear anything about this. All I heard was that Emmano wanted to sell the room. I'll be going back there tomorrow and find out what the story is and report back.

why don't you ask that girl about "the Lou situation" and clear this thread up

Because he's talking about going to Best tomorrow. Unless she works there too I don't think he will have the chance to ask her about it. ;)

I went to the Cue Club one time during this trip to watch Oscar play Gus. I went up to the counter to ask the girl that Lou described for an ice tea. She asked me if I would rather have one out of a can and directed me to the soda machine. I assumed at the time, and from reading Lou's report I feel that I am right, that she was simply lazy.

The canned iced tea is probably better there just like it is at most pool rooms if they even offer uncanned iced tea.

Give it a rest guys. It's unseemly to leap to the most negative conclusion possible when there are easily perceivable variations to your conclusion.

P.S. I prefer to play elsewhere. I haven't been in the place in almost two years.

Well, you are obviously too fancy for the place, Mr toilette

Hey, I'll have you know that other than a lip full of chew just about 24 hrs a day, I am a very discerning player BB.

I can fade a stanky toilette, no biggy. I'm a farm boy from the flat lands.
I have stepped in more than one cow patty in my life and a couple of dog poops.
Was just saying, the 4 or more hours we were there playing, the puke was still there.
Any other place in the world, it would have been cleaned up. Least I hope so.

But other than that, I thought the Cue Club was just fine. The tables looked great and the beer was cold.

Hmmm, this Green Room has me intrigued tho. Must put that on my next time Bucket List. I know they probably don't allow singles in
but I can pay a cover and watch. I'm a sick puppy, I know.

Because they love the place, the regulars at Cue club have learned to live with the short comings of the place .

While I was in Vegas for the One Pocket Open I practiced for three days at the Cue Club on East Sahara. Each time the same short dark haired woman (who I took to be the manager), gave me a table and took my money when I was done. It’s a big room and on the last day I was there I played on a table near a sign that said something to the effect: Day time special, play from X to X hours for $8.

Each day that I had played at the Cue Club had fallen into those hours. So I go up to pay and the bill is like $18, pretty much what my bill had been the previous two days and I say to the woman, “It would have been nice if someone had told me about the daily special.” And she doesn’t say a word while she’s counting out my change. And I ask her, very nicely, “Why didn’t you tell me about it?” And, again, she says nothing. As I leave I say, “I guess I’ll just have to find another pool hall to practice at and she finally says something: “Suit yourself” and I replied, “I will.”

As many of you know, I travel around a fair bit and have played pool at rooms all across the country. And in my experience, sometimes rooms offer daytime specials, typically offering a flat rate of $8-10 to play from opening to sometime in the afternoon. Others stipulate that if you buy lunch you get to play free until 3 or 4pm. *Not once* at any other room I’ve played at anywhere in the country has the houseman ever failed to tell me about a daily special, either before or after I’ve played.

And so the fourth day I go Best Billiards on East Flamingo and, as I mentioned in my trip report, the room is wonderful. And I see a sign on the wall that offers an $8 “Daily Special” and I decide that I won’t say anything and that I’ll just go up and pay my time when I’m done and see what happens. I’d had a cappuccino and when I go up to the counter the woman says, without prompting, “It’d be cheaper for you if you just paid the daily special rate, so your bill with the cappuccino is..." whatever it was.

Anywhos, if you’re looking for a pool room to play at in Las Vegas, I’d recommend Best Billiards -- great equipment and they serve a mean cappuccino. They have a Daily Special too :-)

Good post, I like Best Billiards too.

Getting to the bottom of this whole thing ...

Because he's talking about going to Best tomorrow. Unless she works there too I don't think he will have the chance to ask her about it. ;)

Well, If I can track her down, I'll stop by the Cue Club too. Heck, I'm just hanging out in Vegas just goofing around, so why not? What did she look like?Either way, I don't think Lou is out anything since the day rate was not in force. Still, ignoring his inquiry about it is a little weak. I'd just let it roll off your back.

But, if I happen to locate her, should I tell her, "This one is from Lou ...", and then pop her in the chops?

Ask her for the day rate and an iced tea. :D

I played and gambled at Best Billiards. The equipment was great and food was pretty good. However, it takes quite sometime to get the food! The Italian man that owns the joint is in no hurry. So if you order there I suggest you do it immediately and expect to wait at least an hr!

ah, just like being it Italy. I asked if the owner was in when I visited, but he was not so I didn't get the chance to meet him.

Given the fact that I was not provided a reasonable explanation -- while I was standing right at the counter -- the central issue I originally wanted to address was how the two pool halls handle the daily rate special thing with new players.

And since everyone else is speculating and coming up with alternate explanations, here's my guess: Clearly, the housewoman at the CC knew I wasn't a regular and thought I wouldn't find out there was a special. AND I don't even think she knew there was a tournament in town. I was nice and pleasant during our brief interactions and there was *no reason* she couldn't have just said "no special during tournaments" and that would have been the end of it. It's a pool room and as the horsewoman I'm sure she's had to say far, far worse to a customer, so certainly she could have handled that level of potential "confrontation." I'm guessing she was just too embarrassed being busted on it.

lol, blow her a kiss. It's nothing personal.

I hope CC learns from this miscommunication fiasco and covers up the daily rate sign for next years BCA jamboree.

There real issue is that this type of customer service is not limited to one area or one room.

I've always wonder why there is not a Pool Owners Group to help set a standard for rooms and customer service, sorta have a star rating system for rooms.

I always thought the room owners need to play a bigger role in growing the sport. The one place I play doesn't do anything to bring in new players. I was there yesterday practicing and on the pool side, I was it and this was a 6 in the evening.

None in the area offer a weekly or even a monthly pool clinic. It seems they have all gone the league route in order to keep the places open. The single player , you do remember that pool is not a team sport right, is forgotten.

Well, what's to you? Why do you give a rats ass about this thread at all?

Did you lose sleep because of this?

Name calling is so like second grade. Be a man, and speak to a man like a man and not some second grader.

I've always wondered if you lost sleep over this shot:

You should make this your sig line.

un happy customers sure help pool rooms close. it is up to the owner to make sure all the little details of a place are in order. if the food comes out too slow speed it up or tell people that when they order. if the sign says day rate and the day rate isnt in effect take it down. if you have to ask first to get it before you play then post that clearly.

it is also the owners responsibility to have his counter person follow his policies as this person is his representative and sometimes will determine the future of his business.

if lou is a picky and complaining customer unless he is hurting your business accommodate him, he is spending money in your place.

It was good seeing u in Cue Club on 5/9/2012. Just for your information: During the BCA Jamboree, the special day rates at Cue club were NOT effective. Day rate Specials will resume today or tomorrow.

I am one of those diehards that like to hang out at Cue club. In another 3 hours I will be heading there. Take care Lou.

If a classy guy like vagabond hangs there, how bad could it really be?
