The Difference between Winning and Beating people

yep....sounds like your a fair player, like your attitude.
An no we're not going to hold hands...lol

Yeah I agree with OP. Hear that crap in league all the time. example:

Richie Runthemout is a SL9 and has to make 75 balls.
Billy Bangaball is a SL5 and has to make 38 balls.

Bill wins the match with a score of 38 - 71. Sure Billy got to his ball count before Richie and runs around the poolhall saying he beat a SL9. IMO, there is no "beat" invovled at all. Sure Billy won, but his opponent still out shot him by 33 balls.

my thoughts on this

I could go real deep on this subject and I will try to keep it simple. My deep belief is you never "beat " me until I just quit playing you period .That is to say you have to win so many times ,so many matches ,so many ways that I just give up ,then I am beat or beaten .Guess what ....I just don't do that .When I started playing this game again I played one guy almost every night for over two years until I got to the point of winning a few more games each night than he did .Then I got lucky and won a tournament match or two against him , he quit playing me after that ....did I "beat" him ?Only he can answer that .It may just be me , it may be a thing with being southern , I am not sure where it comes from but I developed a certian tenaciousness from an early age .How great it would be if I had the time and income to play a top pro like I did the guy who played me every day for over two years .Maybe I would finally figure out just how far I could go as a player .A compliment I often give a good player is they are much like a sore pecker , very hard to beat ....:rotflmao1::lol:

This really is my take on pool...I'm not done yet...do you see me breaking down my cue?...my tables not up for sale on graigs list as of yet !...I'll go to my grave a winner..I may not be the big hitter or local champion, but I'm no loser either..I've lost many matchs an sets...I like playing even, but I have no problem giving weight to even things up..I personaly only know of a couple guys that quit playing..yeah they really quit.but I think it was more to do with their drinking an money management..enough of this run on dribble.
Have a nice day.

Man, why is az so fond of nitpicking over semantics? People just use "I beat him" as a synonym for "I won". It doesn't necessarily have any cocky hidden meaning like "yeah I barbecued that piece of trash, he never wants any piece of me again". Sometimes it just means "I won that particular match."

I hate when people make up some reason to take offense over a harmless comment.

What if Billy wins the match with a score of 38-12? Can Billy say he beat an SL9 then? Just curious if it works the other way too.

Of course. 38-12... the 9 got his ass handed to him...

Not necessarily!

It could be that the Ritchie won the lag then broke and ran one table and missed on the 4-ball on the next rack. Billy then ran off 6 racks* and made the 2 on the final rack.

One miss and the match is over does not equal a crushing defeat.

Therefore, it depends on HOW the match transpired.

(*) playing WAY WAY over the ability of an SL6--but that is a story for a different time.
