I think it was mid to late 80's. I was hanging around All Star Billiards in Lexington,KY. If I was not already there they would call me to come down if a road player came into to town. Well I was at home one afternoon and got a call ( I should mention that not many if any pool players had cell phones at this time and no internet, lol ) Well the call I got was from a friend in Tenn. He said to be on the lookout, that there was this kid that was on his way to Lex. and I just wanted to warn you that this kid has beaten everyone in his path coming all the way up the road from way down south. I said no shi! And he said yeah, you better watch out,you can't beat him! I couldn't get my stuff together fast enough and head out to Lex. ( I live about an hour away) Well I get there and start hittin balls on the front 9ft GC where I always played. My friend had even told me how he would be dressed and that he would be wearing cowboy boots. Sure enough just like clock work in comes this guy with his cue and yep, he's wearing cowboy boots, lol . So I kinda don't pay much attention to him,and then he comes over and says hey buddy you want to play some? Well about that time I get another call from the pool room phone. I talk for a few minutes then hang up. The guy is over by the bathroom and I ease over to him so I can catch him off to the side and asked him what his name was and of course he gives some phoney name:p and then I just said hey buddy I know your name where your from and how you play and all of that.He wouldn't budge about his real name and I was just messin with him and I said I'll bet 20$ that I know the name on your driver license then he says, yeah I know what the fukin ph call means!! LOL So I said well I don't think I can beat ya but if you give me the last two in 9ball I'll play ya some,He gets a little cocky then and says rack em up! (he knew by then that he was not going to get any action except from me) So then we start playin and I get him about 10 or 15 games stuck and then his partner talks me into playin even. I didn't care I just wanted to keep playin and so we started playing even, bad idea on my part. He got even in a few hours and I said I have had enough. In all we had been playing for 15 hours! That was the toughest action that I have ever had.I beat everybody that came in there except for this guy named CJ Wiley. We've been buds every since. John B.

PS: he was doing something diff to the cball that I had never seen before, that's for sure!!

Great story, John. Thank you for sharing.

I definitely do not understand the gambling culture around pool. I am not saying anything negative about it but just that I don't understand it.

Thank you all the Pro´s

Thanks John and CJ (and the rest of the pros when they visit:)) for all the stories and knowledge that you share, it has helped my game and it will continue to do.

I have both John´s and CJ´s DVD´s, and some.... :roll eyes:

I guess you can say that I know and can perform at the table rather good sometimes but I always know that I can pick something along the way by just listen and keep an open mind, - it may take awhile but eventually it will "drop".

Hopefully I will meet you both sometime until then, - Thanks for your efforts and please do continue.

Regards

Chrippa

Ps - I just love this game !

I would like to read it but it is just to hard to read an almost 500 word single spaces paragraph.

Good story, John.

I see that CJ may be backing away from AZB & focusing more on Facebook, Google & YouTube.

I hope he is sort of passing the torch onto you.

Again, Good Story.

I think you'll find that you get to a certain point in your game when a little gambling will cause you get over a plateau. An extra incentive so to speak. Does not have to be a large wager either. Everyone is different.

I find EVERYBODY wants tell the story when they were the winner. When they tell me they were the winner, I start doubting the story a little.

When someone tells a story where they are the loser....it is usually pretty accurate.

There are some good players in Paducah and pretty savy as far as who was really good, or those who had a great reputation. They said that for a period of time, CJ was as tough as ANYONE.

Compliments are tough if you aren't a local. CJ wasn't local, so that was quite a compliment. ;)

Great story...Kentucky was a tough spot to land (probably still is). I went through Bolling Green back in the early 90s looking for action. Found it, didn't like it, pretty much wrecked gambling for me forever! :embarrassed2: I think it was the first time I really saw how good pool could be played...and how I wasn't nearly as good as I thought I was!

You've mentioned that you are new to the game as well as AZ......
....you gonna get along just fine.

I went to a Thai boxing and kick boxing extravaganza once...10 fights on the card.
At the end, I had to use the washroom which was in the locker room area......
...I also had to change my tee shirt....ringside got splattered by blood in the heavyweight
fight.
The fighters were discussing how the fights went and they were showing each other how
to throw a punch without opening yourself up to a counterpunch.
And the heavyweight who had won by a KO was playing doctor to the guy he knocked out...
...how many fingers do you see?

I realized that in the ring, they fight fiercely, but they loved each other as much as they
loved to fight.

Well, Flop, that's how most road players are....they'll gamble till the lease runs out on the
pool hall.....but the SOBs actually love each other and will bail each other out.

It's a philos thang

Thanks. Yeah, I thought about that the other day. It seems like some players believe that if you win some money gambling that you will keep playing to give your opponent the chance to win it back. That does almost undermine the idea that the people gambling (not necessarily hustling) in pool are not doing it to leave someone else busted.

I admit I have a lot to learn about this world and that many of the things I thought I knew about pool before I got into it were wrong. I have been enjoying the journey so far.

Just to defend myself, it is easy to estimate the number of words. I also took into account his postings. He does not start very many threads that will always produce the longest postings. He usually give like one line responses. What I said is not like complaining about spelling or punctuation.

Long endless paragraphs though are a real problem on social media, especially if you are viewing it on your phone. My comment was not meant to be petty or personal. If every posting was like that none of us would be reading vary many postings.

Can you tell us more about the cue ball? What was different?
I hate to reiterate, but I will for him...

Touch of Inside. CJ's cueball always came off the cushion different than the other rotation players.

I like that you adjusted and kept playing. Not the norm now a days. "Take the money and run" seems to be the norm today.
