Hi all, as most of you know we have "The Magnificent 7" weekend planned for November 12th, 13th and 14th more info here http://www.azbilliards.com/2000storya.php?storynum=7932
I have had alot of interest but at this point I have nobody writing checks. I am a little shocked that something like this has not taken off like I would have expected. Therefore I have to re evealuate the situation and look to see what exactly I am doing wrong here, I do not believe that the line up of players are the problem for obvious reasons. So how can I make this a better event and or more appealing to the pool fans?
Here are some of the remaining factors that I would like your opinions on.
1) price - Would it be better to have 50 guests at $1,000.00 per person instead of a more private experience with 20 guests at $2,500.00 per person?
2) Location - Is Denver too far out of the way? (I feel its fairly central in location and a great pool room)
3) Schedule of events - Is there something that I am missing that people would like to see more than the current schedule?
4) Me - Am I smoking crack? thinking that this is something that anyone even wants to take part in?
5) Everyone will get a signed picture with the Pros along with a copy of the DVD documentary of the weekend when it has been edited and released for sale. Do I need to add more value??
I respect the opinions of the AZB community for the most part and would love to know what it would take for the average pool fan to want to take part in this event.
I hate to come on here and explain that one of the best (In my opinion) gatherings isn't working like I wanted it to, but hey I am constantly learning and trying to make things happen while pushing the envelope of what can be done in the pool world. I guess you have to fail in order to learn right?
Please let me know, thanks
Mark,
Well I tried to put something very special together. It seem that there has been alot of interest in all these players from alot of people and so I just thought the ultimate in a group gathering would be a great thing. The dollar amount it what it takes to do something like this and I can't do much about that.
I am a little suprised at some of the kinda mean things that were said to me in a few posts on here. I expect it from people like COO COO but not others.
I have learned something new however as this is something I have wanted to do for a long time and thought it would be a great opportunity for all concerned. At least Inow know that this is not something that is going to work in the near future. So I can take that off my plate for now anyway. All I have lost is my time that has been invested in this.
I am not going to give in though with my other plans and ideas to bring new and exciting things to the pool world. Like I said before I can't be a success without having some failures.
Thank you all for your input and ideas. For those who chose to beat and flame me you should try to come up with some ideas yourself and see how easy this is.

A few years ago, Massey, Allison, Gerda and Paul Potier did a "Pool School in Paradise" in Vancouver, Canada. It went for three years (at $2500 Cdn), and had about 6-8 students each time. 20 is a large group for that much dough. That said, I think it's a great idea, and you have a room owner who's completely behind you. Best of luck with this.

Although I think you have great intentions and mean the best, I don't see this working. It is just too much money, particularly in the pool world.
Pool players, in general, are cheap. Most couldn't afford something like this and most that could afford it are ambivolent.
I could afford to pay the fee and travel to the show but I really don't see it as a big deal. I am not big on hero worship. Whether it be football (my favorite sport) or pool, I am not going to spend a lot of money to meet or watch them.
Sorry, just my opinion.
I really hope it works out for you and the legends, I really do. Unfortunately, I think I am in the majority, which is your problem.

Bruce do you go out ofyour way to try and be a ass or is that just what you are? Remember when you used to call me at 7am everyday wanting to rant your BS about everything and everybody on here? Well you did until I told you to stop calling with your negative crap at 7am while i was getting my kids ready. Is that why u r being a ass? Everyone knows you have alot to say but won't put any money into pool and so this event really was not focused at you as I knwo you would love to free load all over it if you could just as you do with everything else.Another GREENIE!

Trying to figure out what the market will bare is I guess what I am figuring out right now. You are right we have been to hundreds od different cities with different pros over the past 3yrs but never anything like this. This is a new experience for me and so I really don't have the handle on it that you might think.Exactly $1800 for those guys -It's just NO comparison to the Mag 7. The target audience isnt your average player but the older well off crowd who remember and greatly respect these legends. I see the eyes light up on some of these guys when they talk about about Sigel or Buddy. Hell the last Seminole event with Sigel had more spectators than any previous event in this area and it was 90% attributed to Mike.
Pool School in Paradise did take out full page ads in the mags though and the Mag 7 has to get the word out somehow also. Most of the target audience is not on AZB.
Mark- You are really the best person to have a handle on this. You have taken many pros out there for exhibitions and pool schools. Was there resistance to the $$?-Were the students hard to sign up? You really should have the best feel for what the market will bear on something like this and i assumed you thought it through.
PS- It's not like anyone gets rich off this. A little over 6k a piece before promotion and travel costs.
Thanks for your supportMark,
I love what you're doing for pool and I think you have a lot of great things coming.
With this event, it's packaged and marketed like you would a weekend playing gol with pro golfers. About ten years ago, the cost to play in pro-ams with professional golfers was only slightly higher than that. I'm sure it's more now, but I don't know how much exactly.
The problem is that the dynamic with pool is completely different. People who love pool, have an extra 2500 for pool entertainment, and who want to know, play with, hang out with or stake these players have probably already done so. Pool champions are more accessible than stars of any other sport. That's a great thing about pool, but it makes it difficult for fans to value their time and company as much in monetary terms.
I've seen top players trying to get action for $50 sets and people won't step up. Can you imagine the line of people waiting in line to play tiger woods for $1000 a round?
The two sports aren't comparable right now. They may never be.
There's a book called 'Free' by Chris Anderson which explores the new marketing shift of giving things away to build a connection with consumers and then get them to see the value of other 'paid' offerings. It's why so many ebooks on Amazon have a third to half of the book for free. Get them hooked.
It's why gmail and google documents are free to use. Get the fans, then sell ads or products that the fans will be able to see the value of. TAR and other streamers have been doing this and slowly the number of viewers has been growing. Will it be enough? Too early to tell.
I think there is a way to market the talents and charisma of your players such that their stock rises to the point where events like tm7 are not only full, but have a wait list.
I know the players do free exhibitions for the public before the csi events (well, that's what I gather from reading azb anyway ) and I'm sure that has helped boost attendance. Maybe there are other ways to create content and distribute it freely to create interest. A YouTube channel with regular tips and interviews from the 7. Possibly an e-book which encapsulates some key features from each of their games and some funny stories.
Pool just isn't at 'the tipping point' yet. People like you adding positive content is what will help drive it there.

Try and be positive about something and try to not annoy people. Do you wonderwhy you get so many on here who are mean to you?? I have spoken to alot ofpeople and they have also told me that you pulled your 7am stalker routine with them also. Lonley, bitter man. JMO![]()
Bruce, there is a way to go about giving opinions. You can give them with a little class even if they are not positive. You seem to give your opinions in a very confrontational way that seems to want to dig at whoever. I have stayed away from bashing you on previous threads when most others were. I did this cos I didn't have anything good to say or I could not find the classy way to say it. However you seem to have no problem piling on me when I am obviously having a tough time trying to get something great together. So from now on I will just jump in on on like everyone else does. Maybe you enjoy the attention???? Maybe the only attention you can get is negative and so you go with that since its better than no attention at all?? MMM I think I just figured you out COO COO.You know Mark I thought twice about my first reply, should I post, should I not post. I gave you my honest opinion. I thought you were looking for peoples feedback.
