The most impressive pool playing that you have ever witnessed?

Nobody has mentioned the Shane/Alex match the first time they played at the derby when it was at the old venue. There wasn't a person in the place playing pool cause they were all leaning on the tables watching the match. That's when TAR was in full effect. It was about 10k each with about 100k in the middle. It was a race to 23 and if my memory serves me right, the final score was 23-21 Shane. He got Alex good that week but I heard that Alex followed Shane around for a bit and got some back...lol

I mentioned it (Post 46), but the details are all fuzzy. I also thought it was a race to 23, but I couldn't find the match on the TAR page that says 23. LOL.

Personally witnessed....

1. About 20 years ago I watched Dan Louie playing a good shortstop level player at the 211 Club in Seattle. I sat back and watched with a few people. Dead silent. Dan obviously knew the guy (they were meeting up just to play, did not see money change hands). Watched for about an hour. Dan put on a clinic. He looked about 10 feet tall walking around that table he was so dominant. Just no emotion, click click click, rack, click click click rack. Did not get out of shape more than a few times in an hour. Like a machine. Total control. Was the first time I had seen something like that in person.

2. I watched Scott Frost playing 9 ball in the finals of a Desert Classic event 5 or 6 years ago. He had been sitting for quite some time (winners bracket), and the guy he was playing (Dennis O) was on FIRE finishing out the losers bracket. Dennis looked unstoppable coming into the final matchup. Scott looked....bored and tired. Sitting there chatting with people now and then, eating some snacks, and looking like he wanted to kick back and take a nap. Then the match started. Scott immediately took over. He shuffled around the table lethargically with a grin on his face, and just demolished every rack in front of him. By the 2nd rack it was obvious nobody on earth would be beating him that match. It was something to see.

wu chia ching running those 5 racks comes to mind first
efren's IPT wins
efren's color of money win

earl's 11 racks in a row (watched recorded)

mark selby and darren appleotn in the word chinese 8 ball 2015

Matthew clatterbuck playing Bailey
Not being all secret just not a name dropper.

Post it up

I am very familiar with both of them. Would have loved to see that. Matt is determined and a hard worker, Bailey is all natural . A classic struggle,

So when, where and who won?!

Post #56 was the original with no names post #58 was a response to post #57 wondering who the players were. It was in Harrisonburg Va at gold crown. The rest is in the first post. I agree with you statements about both players. Don't know Baily as well but danm is that a smooth stroke. Really enjoy his one pocket. You probably see him from time to time being right outside of D.C.

Oh, and a great match that is on the youtube is clatterbuck vs. mika. Mika gets manhandled.

I was at the expo and watched the match it was a good one. Had no idea it was on Youtube will have to check it out. I think Mika had just won a tournament the week before. Maybe the Masters in Virginia Beach? cant remember.

Is the guy on the right the "Bailey" you are referring to?

I'll start with two:

Earl taking out Efren to win another U.S. Open
Corey taking out Mika to win a U.S. Open

More to follow.....

hmmm

I'm only going to mention in person experiences in my short 2 and a half years in the pool room.

Watching Kevin Cheng play Manny Chua 10 ball on table 4 at Big Tyme's early 2014. Kevin's cueball was on a string whether he was kicking, playing safe, or jumping.

The next would be watching Alex P. come back from 0-3 against Richie Rich at the Big Tyme Classic One Pocket.

Finally would be watching Tony Chohan play one pocket and beat Richie Rich and a couple other guys out of 50k+ over the span of two short trips at Big Tymes. Tony's shot making ability was UNBELIEVABLE on top of the fact that he moved like a fricken ghost. What was even stronger was that everyone else in the room unanimously decided that Alex was probably the only player who outclassed Tony and it would still be close.

I would say this was around 2003 or 2004ish. The DCC was at the Executive West, and it was my first time going, and my first time witnessing top players play...in person.

Between matches I watched Ronnic Alcano play Dee Atkins $20.00 / game 9 ball. Ronnie Alcano hit every break perfect: the rack exploded; the cue ball stopped dead center of the table, and he had a shot on the one ball. He would run to the five or six ball, and Dee Atkins would rake the rest. Dee Atkins rarely got to shoot; when he did; the played very well and did not buckle under the pressure that Alcano was putting him under.

However, Alcano played the best 9ball, I have ever witnessed. In VERY short order, Atkins pulled up and paid off what looked like $200.

I was shocked at how thoroughly one pro could beat another. I do not mean to disparage Atkins' game, because he is still a great player, and I think he played about as well as he could, but Alcano was in another class.

Surprised no one has mentioned Varner's comeback against Sigel. I'm not at home, so I can't look up the exact venue(US OPEN), but I think he was down 9-1/9-2 maybe, race to 11, Gets hooked, kicks the ball in, and then went on a tear, got to the hill, and missed an easy shot on the 9, then Sigel missed, and Nick wins. Some incredible outs by Nick.

Other than that, the single best match I've ever seen, was Efren/Danny Smith in the Make it Happen 1P last year. This was not the Finals, but the match they played during the round robin. I believe Dr Bill was in the booth, and said it was the best match he's ever seen, and he's a doctor, so.......

Great Thread.

I believe it was 2001. Joss event at Country Club USA in Chelmsford Mass. Alex Pagulayan won the 5k added 9-Ball, 10k added 9-Ball, 1k added 8-Ball and 1k added One Pocket events. The kicker, he also won the 50/50 cash raffle and a good chunk of money playing backgammon. Things just went perfect for Alex that week and he played great to boot. I learned a few shots that week that I will never forget.

I was there for that one too. No one knew who Alex was before that. I remember Grady giving Alex weight in the beginning and then, by the end, he was getting weight. Alex won everything there was to win that week.

For me it was the race to 120 Color of Money match between Earl and Efren in the late 90s. Earl on the second day put on a display of 9-ball that's hard to even describe -- he had a 17 or 18 game lead at one point (on Efren Reyes!) -- and then he lost!!

If you want to see the two best players in the world beating each other's brains out for three days you'll never see a better match.

When Nick missed the very easy 9, the 9 ended up glued to the cueball in no mans land. Mike had no makeable shot. He was so pissed off, he didn't even attempt to play a safety. He took a flyer at it. I forget -- he might have even launched a ball off the table. Anyway, he wasn't a happy camper.

1999 World pool championships. Efren ran a 9 pack!!

https://youtu.be/CNwWqrTMa7Y?t=1

Reyes won 9 games in a row, but Game 5 (the 5th game of the match, not the 5th of his 9 wins in a row) was a clearance after a Bustamante scratch on the break. So the package (I include only break-and-run games) was Games 6 through 13, an 8-pack.
