The Original SCARFACE and other players from yesteryear.

I stopped in at my local pool room and one of our senior road agents who still manages to drop by the pool room from time to time was there and we struck up a conversation about players from yesteryear.

Ernie Sellers has been around pool all of my adult life and even before that. He's got a lot of miles on him but he is still sharp and remembers some of the top players from yesteryear.

I thought maybe some of you would like to hear their names and what Ernie's thoughts were.

Ernie said Johnny Fitzpatrick played just under Luther Lassiter. Johnny Irish was a top player from the East Coast.

Marcel Camp was from Miami I think and Ernie said he witnessed Marcel winning 10 games in a row and his partner in crime said they might lose a game every now and then and Marcel replied "We don't ever have to lose a game, EVER".

Another player from yesteryear was Scarface, who visited New Orleans in 1948. He apparently had a birthmark on his face, maybe close to his eyes.
He as a good gambler.

Connecticut Johnny was another top player from those early days of pool.

Oh yeah, Johnny Fitzpatrick reportedly gave Squirrel Carpenter the 7,8 playing 9 ball when Marshal Carpenter was quite young and beat him.

Ernie had witnessed John Schmidt practicing a year or so ago and I asked Ernie how the players of yesteryear compared with the players of today and he said that today's players are more advanced than the players of yesteryear. Just a few thoughts to consider who lived and breathed pool for his entire life. Ernie was one of the few people that I knew who made a living playing pool his entire life. Ernie likes the horses and still claims he is way ahead of the horses. He doesn't play pool any longer but he is in his 80's now, seems to be in pretty good shape and gets around just fine.

Guys like that... like Sailor of Racine, have been up and down the road, around the block and through the alley's ... a couple times! It seems a guy can just feel the knowledge of the past oozing from their pores. It gets into the air. I love being around those guys.

Standing in a group with Sailor, Fels, The Beard, Jeff Carter, Bobby Hunter at Red Shoes, for instance, one can just feel "pool" in the atmosphere. It's the same when in the presence of Buddy, Nick, Dallas West and Grady as I was a few years back at The Superman Classic. It's palpable.

Bill "Diamond Bill" Cress

Up here in the Northwest we have Bill Cress to share many stories too...

It is really a treat to just be near by when he gets going about the good ole times way back....."Diamond Bill from Pleasant Hill...Never worked and never will.."

Mike Zimmerman and Harry Platis too... Monk (Warren Costanzo) used to come around quite a bit a while back as well...he is a very quiet man, but lucky me, he stayed at my home many times and shared lots of instruction and stories...

Mr. J.

Wow, I never dreamed Ernie might still be alive. Tell him hello for me, Joey.
Nice post.

I'll be sure and tell Ernie you said hello. He's outlived Earl Heisler by several years already. Ernie really looks good for his age and his mind is still relatively sharp.

The next time I am in the room with him, I'll give you a call and the two of you can chat.

Diamond Bill from Pleasant Hill...Never worked and never will..... That's awesome. If I ever get back up your way, I would love to meet him.

I was fortunate to meet your friend Monk and he impressed me as a man and a player.

Mr. J, you have always been around top players and many of them are your friends so you must have have some secrets to share. I will have to have you in my booth one day to pry them from you.

Scarface's real name was, Jack Fornier? I remember Babyface Whitlow talking about him. Top, top player.

Beard

Edit; I just checked my pool encyclopedia and I got a better spelling of Scarface's name: Fritz Scarface Fournier, spent much time around Detroit

Marcel was a great One Pocket player, and pretty strong at 14.1 too. He was Diliberto's mentor. Next time you're with Danny, ask him to tell you about Camp.

I saw him play in Johnston City and Miami. Harold Worst beat him playing One Pocket (bad) at JC and Camp was a hot sucker. I remember that. He said to no one in particular, "How did I let a billiard player beat me?" Not even Camp knew how good a pool player Worst would become.

Camp was considered a top handicapper of pool games and many times players would ask him how they should match up. He could always make a good line on the game. Seemed like he had a side bet on every match at JC. He was always there collecting the cash. Very smart game maker, second only to Fats and maybe equal to Earl Shriver, another great hustler from that era.

And Camp knew a lot of pool secrets, little moves on and off the pool table. I saw many players going to him for advice and a little extra knowledge. He was one of those guys, that if he showed someone a shot on the pool table, everyone wanted to gather around to see it.

I checked back and got a better spelling of Scarface's real name. Fritz Scarface Fournier. According to Babyface he played about as good as anybody -- as did Marcel Camp. Especially betting their own money.
Camp always carried his whole bankroll on his person. He was also a horrible dresser and very dowdy. He went from being a handsome hunk who was once considered for a Hollywood career to a sloppy old fat man. We all loved him anyway, aside from his worn out suits and shoes. Jay was right about another thing, when Camp spoke about pool, everybody listened.
