The Real Bartram vs. Geno The Machino

I guess your right..........

never had a backer, what kind of BS IS THAT - DO YOU REMEMBER dick olson? do you actually think that any one believes that? a match with chris would be like throwing your BACKERS money in the street. gene practice a LOT and maybe you can play with the locals in mpls. you will not be a winner.

Hi there JMB,

That goes back a long ways. I think I was around 21 years old the last time I had anything to do with Dick Olson.

We went up to Minneapolis to play a guy named Roy at Chicks pool hall in Anoka. I win a couple of thousand the first night.

We went back the second night and a guy came in with a hood and coveralls, shot his .357 in the ceiling and robbed us, or should I say Dick olson.

That was the last time I went with Dick. Could have gotten killed.

Dick had a bar in Chippewa Falls,Wi. Whenever he had someone that came around they would call me.

I didn't play very good back then. And usually couldn't win if it was a real player. Never amounted to much money. $200 or $300 dollars here and there.

I did take a backer with me one other time, his name was Rich. Nice guy but he tried to get tough with some guys we were playing with at the wrong time and could have gotten us killed. I drove straight back to Wi. and dropped him off.

Rich was the only guy I ever took with me on a road trip as a real backer. That lasted about 5 days.

I think I was about 24 at that time. never again. Solo for me was the way to go.

I would go on the road for about 3 months and then come home and party and work out to get ready to go again.

Had alot of fun. Sometimes made some big scores.

So I guess I should clarify. For the past 30 years or so I bet my own money.

Maybe you think I still play like I did back when i was 21 if you knew me back then.

Your right though ,never is a long time and there was Dick and Rich.

Geno might play real well, but not many US players are at Bartrams speed. A lot of people find that out by losing all their money.

Remember, Geno had nothing to do with this thread starting, he simply came on and said it might be fun. It doesn't seem to me like he just decided that he must be able to beat Bartram and start woofing about it. To me, it seemed like he thought it might be fun. At least that's the way I read these things, and perhaps Geno will clarify this. And perhaps he won't dignify the crap slung his way about it with any answer at all.

Whoever thinks Gene can't play is crazy. Gene didn't even start the cocking off in this thread - he was just commenting. I played Gene one night when I was visiting Minnesota. To say Gene can't play is nuts.... he hardly missed 1 ball the entire night we played.

The very same people cocking off about Gene not being able to play prob can't play a lick themselves. Forget Bartram--- those in this thread who think Gene is a chump--- you ain't getting there against him guaranteed.

who think Gene cant play????

I know for a fact Gene can play. I met him here in Houston for the Galveston tourney. I also met Chris here also. It would be a great match. They both play great. Gene has had some health issues lately that he has been taking care of but hasn’t missed a step. If im not mistaken wasn’t Gene and that Jessie kid pretty tit for tat playing each other? I would say that’s pretty solid.

I don't get it. Someone gets on here to instigate a match between Chris & Gene (why I have no idea). Chris gets on says he'll play, Gene gets on and says it sounds like fun and would like to play when the time is right (shoulder heals & he gets his motor home), and then people get on here telling one or the other they have no chance. Do people not want to see them play?

They are two grown men that have been around the block playing pool, quit trying to kill the action after they kind of agreed to it. Simply bet your side when they schedule the match.

And by the way, both these guys can make games for themselves, and have several times in the past.

Again, I don't get it.

Yeah I was a little off...

You are right, Tinman is up there. I don't think he placed as high as you mentioned, but he did have a couple very good showings out at the Open.

turns out he was 25th this year and 17th last year...still an awesome showing though....

When I decided to go out to his home room to play him instead of the tourney at the other end of town, I ended up wishing I hadn't lol... I put a 3 pack on him to start off our first set (don't remember if it was nineball or tenball) and he ended up beating me in a race to 9....

I'm sure he can play very well, although I doubt he's close enough to Chris' speed to stand toe to toe for any decent length race for some decent cheese.

My prior post on this thread - I was instigating after a couple cocktails and truth be told, I just get a bit tired of the "Perfect Aim is coming to Istanbul, come see me" threads. If every service and ware provider did that, the forum would be very difficult to navigate. I think he's taken a bit too much liberty at times. But, he writes well and seems to have a level head. And I try to give the benefit of the doubt to pool devotees trying to make a buck in this most difficult industry.

In any case, maybe some day someone from MN will match up with the Smooth one. I'd watch Geno and Chris play.

No malice intended.

:) My only point was that Gene can play. In a shorter race, he can beat almost anyone.

Is anyone really saying Gene can't play? I just don't think he can beat Chris, thats all. There's a lot of people out there that play great, just I think people underestimate Chris' game.

Softshot on the other hand...

I never said he could beat Chris - Chris is a beast mofo--- I'd never underestimate his game. I was only commenting on some other posts saying Gene can't play at all. Gene can have a respectful showing or win against anyone in a race to 9, for example. He runs out WELL... that was my only point.

The same could be said for you!

YOU don't get it??? Dave I have been sitting here for days with one leg elevated over my head and two bottles of high test pain pills trying to make sense of about a half a dozen threads that are going on right now.
I can't wait to heal and reread some of this just to see if it makes sense to me when I am straight.:shrug:

Continue healing, my friend. AZB forum was a really good way for me to kill time while healing. Pain pills only helped the experience :).

When 2 players match up factors......

Whoever thinks Gene can't play is crazy. Gene didn't even start the cocking off in this thread - he was just commenting. I played Gene one night when I was visiting Minnesota. To say Gene can't play is nuts.... he hardly missed 1 ball the entire night we played.

When 2 players match up there are a few huge factors.

How good is the player playing right now? What is this players top game and can he get there and stay there? How is he going to prepare for the match?

Are things going to happen that cause the player not to get any sleep the night before?

If and when this happens I know Chris has been through the fire. He knows how to prepare for a match like this. And believe me when I say so do I also.

Sometimes as players we play when we don't feel quite right or are not at the top of our game.

I really do think that eventually we will be putting this match together but I guarantee that it won't happen unless I'm 100% ready to play, health wise and preperation wise.

If we went to a tournament and everyone thought a certain player was the best maybe we should just give him first place and not play.

Of maybe if I do set up this match with Chris when I show up I should just give him the cash and just leave. Or vise-versa.

Many players don't even realise how little difference there is between the ability of players once you get to a certain level.

I see so many great players while I'm traveling around the country. They work for a living at some good job that keeps them from playing 8 hours a day like they should if they want to compete at a very high level. They have a beautiful home, married and have a nice little family. They are living life and enjoying the most important things that a person can have. They are living their dream and just trying to make life good for their familiy. And most are doing a great job.

But I can see that if this same person was playing for 8 hours a day for 6 months look out. I have alot of respect for these players everywhere I go. They are some of the most important players we have in this pool world around the country.

And if you guys read this you know who you are. You are the guys that the local players look up to and most are total gentleman.

This is one of my highlights when I travel around. Seeing and meeting all these good players that could be top competitors in the world with the right situations.

But the same things that keep these players from being champions are the same things that help them being champion people in life.

It would be kind of hard to trade that all for being able to make a few more balls on the pool table.

Keep up the good work my friends.

Sa ya soon when I'm back on the road. Thanks everyone geno.......
