The "Riv"...

watchez,

Are you refering to the downtown casino's? There is a big difference between them and what we refer to as "The Strip". "The Strip" sort of begins at the Stratoshere and ends at South Point. Some of the downtown hotels are successful. Some, like Binion's, have gone through the same process as "The Riv". Fremont Street like South Las Vegas Blvd is a tourist attraction all into itself.

Lyn

Sorry to split hairs, Lyn, but I don't think most would consider the South Point as being on "The Strip". I think most think of Mandalay Bay as being the south end of the Strip.

Eric

Downtown is a separate entity. What most consider the north end of the strip includes essentially 4 hotels: The Riv, C-C, Sahara, and Stratosphere. The last one, while newer, never caught on and had financing problems that caused delays in it's construction. There is also a lot of vacant real estate between all these hotels that hurts the properties in that section of the strip.

Strange info you have there - the most successful hotel (s) are on the north end of the strip.

Steve,

with the utmost respect your GPS is broken buddy, or compass.:D

yeah its south strip and the M which is farther down is south strip as well and perhaps the best venue for Mark second to the Riv. Its family owned(my neighbors-i dont know), but what I do know they are very affordable and easy to work with and i'm sure haveample space, South point has Room for 800 boxes but they have their troubles nd are in a Chapeter 11 BK with some funny biz going on.

Down town makes the Riv look like the Wynn, at the Plaza at 1 Main St. they might have enough room for 100-200 box's perhaps more I havent explored all their space, rooms down town are all but free but its the hood, having any pool event down town would be a black eye on pool, not that were the PGA in private jets-but honestly its bad there and would cost half what the Riv costs but the element of trashy people it would draw would be horrible. not doable.

when I came here 20 years ago it might have been ok, but it has declined since, the exception is the Golden Nugget-the most accuratly named business in Vegas, it is a nugget of gold in a bucket of Shit and still is all these years later.

Mark has had events there and they were great its just not big enough for a league venue, but for a pro tournment or a thing like Mark did(I cant rememberthe nsame) Brandon shuff won the 8ball it was GREAT!!!!

like I said Vegas is a great city for pool annual events and Mark lives here, we got nothin to really worrry about

I agree completely. Never liked downtown myself, even in its better days (whatever that means). It is basically the poor step child to the strip - anywhere on the strip really.

My thoughts too. In fact, I wonder if Mark Griffin has checked into the site as a backup plan.

South Point has a huge conference room in the back, by the Equine arena (up the escalators). In fact, it might be big enough to house the amateur tables. For the Pro event, maybe having that in the Equine arena, with the stadium seating (ala Turning Stone) might be the way to go.

i was thinking of the equine area is why I said 800-1000 tables, obviously more space than woukd ever be necessary, I dont know if they are easy to work with. Mandalay bay is a pain in the ass, I knew a boxing promoter that had regular events at the Oreleans and approached MBay when he had a big card, he said it was 1000 worse than working with the DMV, Eric Weider whos uncle and dad own the MR. Olympia body building show(most important highest level in the world) had it at M Bay for a year or 2, Ericsaid it was impossible to work with them and they filled the place 12,000+ seats, he moved it to the Orleans as well which is half the number of seats he said "It just wasnt worth the $$$ alll the headaches MBay caused them".

My understanding about South Point is that they do have enough space, but the cost of building a proper lighting rig to light the tables is prohibitive.

i dont know, the lights the horses are under are bright and could work to light up the whole room, but there could be shawdos on th balls-i dont know, the high lid makes it hard-the riv works lets hope it stays that way.

Personally, I would love to see a new venue for the BCA.
The Riv. is a tired old venue for me at least it is a (Been There, Done That) kind of feeling. :boring2:

Maybe a place like the "Orleans" Hotel & Casino? I think they have plenty of Convention space, great Restaurants & Food Court, Lively Casino action, Good Shows, Cool Bands/Dancing, HOT cocktail Waitresses, Movie Theaters, & a Bowling Alley LOL

I feel the real attraction is the tourney/action. The Riv has seen better days. The Riv will close it's just a matter of how soon. If there is a viable location then hopefully they will be used as soon as feasible. The Riv is only a detraction to the experience at this point. Time to move on...

Is it just me?

I've been to the Riveria 3 times for APA events and I've enjoyed staying there each time. The last time I went the rooms had just been rentivated and they were great. Personally my ONLY complaint about the Riv was how bad the buffet sucked but other than that I liked it. I hope the Riv stays open and continues to host APA, BCA events......

Oreleans might noit have the space for the tables, they havea arena in the back for boxing etc, but flat open floor space-I dont think its there and I have been everywhere on that property(back from the boxing days), I just dont think there is room. The food gives the Riv the 5 ball,. it would ba about 33% more $$$$.

I completely agree!! The only thing I dislike about the Riv is the buffet. I personally like a familiar feel to tournaments - so since I have been going to the BCAPL for 15 years AT THE Riv, I like it there! I really like the Riv. Too many people *****. If it was somewhere else I'm sure there would be something they wouldn't like. ;)

Yeah Trigger. You just know next year there will be TAP and VNEA threads complaining about the lack of cheap hotel rooms within walking distance of Bally's, not to mention the cost of the rooms and food there.

you said my thoughts exactly, some people are never satisfied,i have went to alot of conventions in the last 30 yrs,any hotel that holds the convention the rooms are always higher for the convenience of staying on site, alot of times if you figure in cabs and and or rental cars or it comes out the same. Some people will miss all the action at night and everything to save a few bucks.Until i bought a condo in Vegas i always stayed at Riv with few compalaints other than food of course.Way back we stayed at LaConcha before it turned into a dive.I was just at WSOP at Rio,i think they have space and know how to host on a tournamet, they sure had alot of poker tables in there

Fatboy-

I am not sure what I am suppose to be reading in your link but I do read this 'On the Strip, gaming revenues in April were $437.3 million, a decline of just under 1 percent compared with $441.7 million collected in the same month a year ago.

For the first four months of the year, gaming revenues statewide are up 0.9 percent while the Strip's gaming revenues are up 7.2 percent.
' and 'Las Vegas grew visitor numbers by 0.9 percent in April, the eighth straight monthly increase.'

My GPS tells me that the 4 corners of Caesars/Bellagio/Bally's/Flamingo(Bill's Gambling Hall) is the Center of the strip. The South end of the strip would start with Excalibur and run to Mandalay bay. The North end of the strip would start with the Wynn and run thru the Sahara. If you want to wager which group of those hotels (North vs South) do a higher volume of business, let me know.

Also - let me straighten you out a little :) Vega$ business wise is not what it was 10 years ago, or even 5 years ago. It is a completely different business model - at least for the hotels that are successful. Vega$ has now learned that money can be made at a profit level outside of gambling. I have plenty of raw numbers I can give you (sorry I don't get my #s from a website but rather from the source) and can give you plenty of examples of where the hotels are spending their money but let's just say for the successful hotels the split between gambling and entertainment (hotel, food, alcohol, shows) is not even a 50/50 split and the heavy side of the profits is on the entertainment side.

Don't leave town just yet buddy. Besides I will be back there in September - they are having a World Championship handball tournament on the parking lot of the Stratosphere and I will be there with my good friend, the 9 time World Champion. There will be action. Hopefully you will be feeling better then and won't ignore me.

p.s. For the poster that commented about events @ Bally's - The Imperial Palace is close to Bally's and has cheap rooms.

No matter how smart one could be we will rob him/her once one enters our city. But we will provide some cheap thrills to the visitor. That is our motto.

Like you, I've been going for over fifteen years. Like you, The Riv is comfortable. However in a different way. From my place in Sunrise Manor it's a twelve minute drive to The Riv. The Trop, Bally's and Orleans are at least another ten to fifteen minutes further away. South Point is at least a forty minute drive across town. I'd prefer the Riv.

As far as the food goes, I try hard to eat as many meals at home as possible. It really is one of the casinos weak points. Their captive audience has begun to drift away and seek alternate choices. The door nazi's are proof of that. Complaining it seems has become one of our National pastimes. Also one of our few choices. Complain, keep your mouth shut or don't go. Your choice!
