There is no money in pool???

For someone at the very top of his field, that isn't very much. If there was a money list, as in golf, how are guys 2-10 doing?

1. You can never and will never be able to compare pool to golf...
2. Making 22k+ per month is solid no matter how you look at it...

So pro pool is doing just great by your measure? ONE PERSON made 22k in 2 months which extrapolates to 130k/yr? and really no chance he can continue at that pace as there just are't enough opportunities. How many pros can be number one by the way??

Not trying to compare to golf, just saying lets not just look at #1 and let's look at 1-10 instead to get a more clear picture of the reality of money in pool....I don't think it'll look very good. My mention of golf was only in relation to them having an easily referenced money list so you can see how everyone in the field is doing.

He made $22K per month, which would equate to $264K if he stays on that pace for the entire year, imo

I didn't say pro pool was doing well overall... it has severe issues. But 45k in 2 months is more than most make in a year... pretty solid for SVB.

IMO, what's happening now is Shane is dominating and winning many events. So one player is getting a disproportionately large sum of winnings.

The same happened in the wpba in the 90's when Alyson Fischer won everything under the sun, but the other ladies made peanuts.

Apparently there is if you play well enough. Shane made $45,750 in the first 2 months of 2014...

Don't forget, however, that the expenses in a pro pool player's job can be hefty at times, depending on the when, where, and how.

And if one gambles on site, this can cut into the profits in the P&L statement at the end of the year.

Then there's the hand of Uncle Sam come April 15th.

I also understand that if you place 5/6 in most tournaments that you will be lucky to break even. Having said that, to my original point, if you play well you can make money as SVB earned $153k, $161k, $190k $96k, $110k and $147k the previous 6 years.

Understood completely. But in all honesty, how many even have a conversation with Uncle Sam every year? Few? Some? None?

That is certainly a nice sum of money. However, most people have to drive 15 or 30 minutes to get to work and earn.

Shane has to drive/fly all over the country and the world and live in hotel rooms 200 days a year (or so). That kinda adds up.

Jam beat me to it. You know those numbers are GROSS right? They live in $100 a night hotel rooms. Eat every meal in a restaurant. Some of these events charge $1.00 per game in the table. $3.00 for a soda or water. Don't even ask how much Beer is. Trust me the nut is huge. It is also not reasonable to look at the top player. The 10th player in the field doesn't make McDonalds money and the 50th can't break even.

Shane also has endorsements I do believe. The bottom line is that, overall there is not a lot of money in pool. However, if you are the best and win the majority of the events you enter you can make a decent living as demonstrated by Shane.

Yes, there is no money in pool, and too many of those that are trying to do something about it, like Mark Griffin and Badi Nazhat, have so much crap flung in their direction that they are at their rope's end. Perhaps Larry Chiborak will fare better -- as he has purchased cooperation of the players.

Blah Blah Blah

Pro players always seem to struggle. It's just the way its been for many years.

And it will never change. Poor money management is usually the issue.

Bill Cress (Diamond Bill) used to hang around the pool that I frequent and would tell us about the times he'd have $20,000 - $30,000 on him. Just before Bill passed away he was living on a $200 a month disability check.

I would bet that 95% of the top players die broke or find someone to take care of them.

Some will say that there is no money for them to manage. I do agree.

And when someone is willing to put some money into the game some of the players just bite the hand that feeds them.

Solution: Time to get a freaking job. Plain and simple.

Just deposit $500 in poker, double up 7 times...cash out $64k, call it a year...
