These "AHEAD" pool gambling races are utter nonsense!!

Ahead sets came about in my day 60'-70's when you played a player with 'fast feet'.
Or a player that was known for 'taking a 2-3 game shot' at you.It was a way of knowing
what you were shooting at. A lot of gamblin was done 'by the game' with a 1 game 'post'
But when you find a player who is 'takin a shot', then post up and play a 'freeze-out'.
Races are a terrible way to bet your $$$! You can be ahead in games and loser in $$$.
Pretty dumb.
FYI
Bmore, I don't know if you know who 'EYE' is, but he was a top player in his day
and good gambler. He played all over the US and played very very well.
ps
'EYE'. Dont know if Hawaiian Jay is still there with you. We played some golf as well
as matched up in pool.

I don't know of him other than from what I've heard on AZ, and what you said is what I've always heard. I don't believe I was being disrespectful , as that was not the intent - measly giving my opinion. What you said with the " freeze out is correct too, and I'll one more thing. If you thought you got someone trapped in a game and they wouldn't play a set or a set for not enough money we would play by the game but " freeze up " xxx $$$ so we knew we could take at least that much before moving forward with the game---- as it very well may have been a " one shot deal " at that particular game.

A different perspective

I used to gamble a lot when I was younger. Here were my thoughts on races vs. ahead sets.

I didn't like ahead sets when I was in the same area playing locals. Because I didn't want to prove I was the better player. I just wanted to win the $. If I beat them in a race, or by the game, they would come back for more action later. If I beat them in an ahead set, they may try one more time, but action would dry up quicker as I proved to be the better player.

If someone was coming through town and it was a one shot, big $ opportunity, at that point I would go for the ahead set because I didn't consider it repeat business. And if I was the better player, I wouldn't want them to get lucky and leave town.

For the big $ people were playing for at the Derby, the ahead sets are fine by me.

Just my two cents.

98% of these players don't have any money. Once the backer/stake-horse takes 60% then do the real math LOL

Real math...40% of 5000 = 2000 divided by 10 equals $200 an hour. No risk since its a backers money. Oh tax free too. Very few jobs pay that kind of rate or return on investment

Says who...It doesn't make LOGICAL sense to me to play matches for several hrs and days etc..What about your real life? (Outside of pool, if he has one??) And from a cost benefit analysis it's definitely not cost effective. A'INT NO MONEY IN POOL. PERIOD!! The biggest money in pool is by people from OUTSIDE the game (poker players, Vegas gamblers etc) who just love the game. LIKE ME 😊

You are correct BigKat . I'm in Lumberton SC installing Flooring like I have for 30 years , making that $ . I don't play poker \ go to casinos \ flip coins . What I do is on the weekends go play strangers and bet whatever . I see u are in SC so where and when ? We can do a two hr ahead set . Whoever is ahead after two hrs wins . You don't have to play over your two hr limit and I can show u how an ahead set works ! Bet whatever and I'll play any game , even bumper pool which I was raised on .I'm from Lumberton area and as a child we had a bumper table at the house ....Lol..... Really like 9ball or One Pocket !

You're likely a champion & therefore I probably can't win. But come to the tournament in Columbia this Friday evening I will be there.

Traditionally, 'ahead' matches were played when the bet was large and the players didn't want to lose a large bet due to the luck factor. Ahead matches give the players the best chance for the luck factor to even out or to not be a factor in the final outcome.

Ahead matches are grueling, which is why they aren't usually played with smaller bets.

A friend of mine told me that same thing. They did a 10 ahead for 2,000 dollars. I watched a lot of it. But it dawned on me. After match 315. They were basically playing for around 6 dollars and 40 cents. lol

For example, John Isner best Nicholas Mahut 70-68 in the fifth set of Wimbledon several years ago. This match lasted almost 7 hours. That is crazy.
Just my opinion.

Just a little correction - that match lasted 11 hours and 5 minutes and it was played across the three days span. I was watching it live on TV, it was just incredible. Isner was all in pain but still he was serving one rocket after another, Mahut on the other hand seemed quite fresh through the entire fifth set.

Here you go the last game of the match ;)
In the second round Isner was so tired that he was able to win 5 games only in the whole match.

ALRIGHT!!!! The 'kat has been called-out!! You run your pie-hole how good you play, well now's your chance. In your OWN state no less. Please have somebody video this for posterity.

I never said "how good I was". I love the game and I've been gambling most of my life (in various forms).

I prefer to play by the game.
I play for enjoyment and if it takes 6hrs to prove we are even, then we are even.

As was said earlier, playing by the set creates the possibility that one can win more games and still endup losing.

If i am playing someone far better than i, then id be more likely to play a race

All the major sports can't have ahead because of commercial dollars. Tennis matches, for example, as they stand are a somewhat predictable length. Ahead sets can last two hours or two days, there's no way to predict it. That's the simple reason we don't see them on tv, not because they are bad or wrong in any way.

In no other self respecting sport is something settled "ahead". Everything is capped!! NBA Finals Best 4/7 Superbowl 1 game, MLB best of World Series, Tennis Best of 3 or 5 sets etc..An AHEAD race imho DOES NOT tell who is better. Maybe who can concentrate longer or has more endurance but that's it!! I mean when it's show time its show time!! Bring your A game straight out the truck and race to 10 games for the same 1k, $5000 or whatever. Why play for 10 hrs straight?? .But I guess quick sports betting $1,000 on the 1st half or betting $300 on the coin toss on the Superbowl has me spoiled!! LOL

It really is very simple, if you dont like it dont watch or pay attention, nobody is forcing you to do anything you dont like to do.

( I don't really care who is better, I want to know who is getting the cheez, and preferably sooner rather than later - either way, don't care)

( probably why I like sets 😆😆😆😆

If the race is long enough and broken into sets the better player is going to win most of the time ,,
The difference between races or sets and ahead sets is if properly matched it eliminates the fatigue factor being part of the equation
People looking for the Nuts will look for what suits them a lessor player might take a real short race against a fit player but would also take a long ahead set against that player but would not take a longer set ,
Some chance in short no change in longer and better chance in long ahead ,, JB is a lot of things stupid ain't one of them
