Things I learned in Jacksonville

I just got back from the big event in Jacksonville and I had to share a couple of things I learned while I was there.

1) We have a pretty incredible community here at AZ. I planned on meeting up with JCIN out there for a beer or two, and was messaged by Big Perm about joining us. Big Perm (Jason) not only met up with me the first night I got there, but let me stay at his place and bought me dinner both nights! A complete stranger put me up at his place because of this forum.......I was amazed. Jason, you're a hell of a guy:cool:

2) JCIN (Justin) is a bad ass too! When I first saw him in Jacksonville he came up to me and gave me a picture he printed out for me from the Bar Table Championships in Reno this year! I can't believe he took the time to do that for me.....thanks again Justin.

3) A few of us went to Hooter's Friday night (JCIN, Big Perm, John Morra, Shane Van Boening, and myself) and I was impressed at how polite and down to Earth John and Shane were. These guys represent the future of pool! Note: If you run into John ask him about the Hooter's girls giving him a set of boobs and making him dance on a chair for his 18th birthday, hilarious!

4) Landon Shuffet is an awesome kid! I'm not just talking about his game, which is outstanding, but the way this kid conducts himself is such a pleasure to see. I have seen another one of today's young teen sensations cry everytime he loses a match, and act like an ass (I realize they are kids), but I think everyone in this sport could learn a thing or two about how to conduct themselves from young Landon. I am sure he will keep his head on straight.

5) There are a lot of young talented female pool players out there, I think the WPBA has a very bright (not to mention beautiful) future!

It was an all around great time out there, and I hope next year even more people show up....you will have a blast!

Glad you had a great time meeting up with a few guys from the board and watching some great pool. I agree that Landon is a great kid and if he continues to improve he will be a champion in the years to come.

I enjoyed reading the trip report. Sounds like you had an absolute blast. Good for you! :p

Kids and pool

what happen to school?

Really trying to be something in life.??

As long as the game don't die out they might be able to feed there familys .( kids in todays pool scene)..I fear the wrost.

Keep the kids in school and out of the poolroom.

From what I hear, Landon's folks, while encouraging him to play pool, are also strict about his school work. I hear he had his head in the books at night at Derby City. His father worked for the school system for a bunch of years, IIRC.
By the way, what is the wrost??

There's no reason a motivated and focused young person like Landon can't become a great pool player AND get a top-notch education. From what I understand, that's exactly what he's doing so far.

Does Landon read this forum at all? I know his dad comes on once in a while. I hope he hears all the glowing praise he gets on here.

Landon rarely gets on the forums but Landon's mother and I show him the nice things that are written. Landon's mother is so pleased to read about the positve way in which Landon conducts himself while we are out and about. Landon just read this thread and is happy about the nice remarks!

He deserves every word of it Stan, and my thanks go out to you and the Mrs. for raising him so well. I was really hoping he would take down Warren Kiamco....he was SO CLOSE!!

What's the difference between nuturing a talent for pool and nuturing a talent for football?

Kids can do both. Don't suppress a child's need to play. Whatever the game may be.

Great post man, you are always welcome to stay if you ever need a place. JCIN, John, Shane, everyone I met made the event worth playing and worth watching.

I've never seen anyone with your talents.....able to consume alcohol of monumental proportions and still play well :D

I am not positive, but I would start by guessing that Football will help to pay for college (even if you did not make D1 level talent, there are a lot of DII and DIII schools out there offering up scholarships). Even if there are full ride scholarships for pool out there I can’t imagine there are that many.

Payout in the long run seems to be quite a bit higher for a Professional football player than it does a pool player, and the follow on opportunities that come to EX-pro athletes are better.

I don’t think that kids should be PUSHED into anything that they don’t want to play. Introduce it to them and nurture it, encourage and keep it fun, then if they lose interest (explain to them the Consequences of their decision first) then let it go. For instance soccer, I despise it. Yet, If my son wanted to play it, I would make sure that he knows that the soccer team is for everyone that gets cut from football and if he still wants to play it then let him play if it made him happy.

If we only did the things we felt would pay off in the long run, we'd miss out on a lot of truly great life experiences. Does anyone know the odds of becoming a pro football player?

There is hope for the future of American Pool with kids like Landon coming up. And he has an excellent role model in Shane.
