This is why I don't like to play for money!!! ...

We're just two sides of the same coin. ;)

HEre's what you do- when you lose set 2, pay with different bills. That way, you will always have their $. Be sure to write his nam on the bills, so you know whose they were.

Are you sure this is the thread you wanna write in...?
Jeezz...yayks...

op sounds like a whiny girl

you never quit up like that unless you agree to something beforehand

that's pretty much the defacto standard

op should not gamble

op should not play pool

op sounds like he really needed that $50

that's all, lol

Don't worry Eric, you didn't start anything going again. I don't agree with his methods, but if they work for some, so be it. I've stated my position on his methods in the past, no need to keep harping on them.

I was referring to me and you.

The day I win one barrel from someone and have to leave, i'm done with pool, in my mind I aint a pool player any more, i'm working the short con. There are exceptions like when my back goes out but i make that clear up front, and thinking about it more, if you got to "go to sleep" for work, you got no biz ripping someone for a set and walking out, that might be cool in poker-but this is pool and that shit dont fly in my book.

Well Fatboy, thanks for setting the bar. Truth is, this unwritten etiquette for gambling is about as fluid bar rules 8 ball.

Communication is the key. Not everybody is as hard assed as you, grew up in the same gambling circles. Gambling is a culture and like all cultures, it changes from region to region.

That "kid" had at least $4,000 in his pocket. And you were quite the smart ass with him after the set which is the true reason you got so much flack from the peanut gallery. If you didn't have so many degrading and smart ass comments to say after the match then none of us would have said anything. We would have been shocked that you quit since you were clearly robbing him but could have seen your point of view about work had you not been such an asshat.

Btw yes it was a race for $50 but you chose that amount, the "kid" asked you to play for 50, 100 or whatever and you chose $50.

Sincerely,
Peanut gallery member #1

Actually,in the same post he mentioned 4k, he also contradicted himself by saying he wouldn't be able to eat tomorrow because of the $50.

holy cow, when the opponent said he wouldn't be able to eat tomorrow it was said tongue in cheek (meaning - sarcastically)! Anyone willing to bet $4K playing pool will not miss a meal because he lost 50 bucks!!! You are not the first to say his post was contradictory; and I know it's tough to READ sarcasm, but c'mon.

that is awful advice.

people should not eat money.

Ok,going back,I can see how it could be sarcasm. But then, this is the internet, where people can usually say what they want without having to prove it.the $4k remark xcould also be complete and utter horse crap, just to try to get one over on the TS.

I can never recall playing one set and leaving winner... If I ever thought I might need to this would be very clear to my opponent before starting the 1st set.

Communication and awareness can prevent most issues regarding etiquette and gambling.

Great post, Tom. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences.

I like the way you explained everything, and I think I'm on the right track. I'm not there yet, but I will keep trying.

I've been mostly beat up in matches lately, but I'm accepting that and trying to find out how much heart I have. I know it's in there somewhere. I just have to find it.

Thanks again.

-Blake

Keep working at it Blake. Try to learn something with every match you play.

If you must play, decide upon three things at the start:
the rules of the game, the stakes, and the quitting time.

Weldon told me it's the most awesome display of offensive pool he have ever seen

oh no!!! i thought we were cool? if we own both sides of the coin does that mean we got all the $$$?

best
eric:):):)

Yes, it means we have it all covered.

I always liked with "Billy Johnson" (Wade Crane) said about his gambling record, he said "No one in the world ever beat me gambling, I just ran out of money a few times".

Billy was in Dallas with a friend of mine, Jr. Weldon and played Buddy Hall on the bar table. Buddy played flawless and Billy said he got off watching Buddy run rack after rack - he beat Billy 15 ahead in just a couple of hours.

After Buddy won the set he was putting his cue away and Billy said "what are you doing, Buddy, FLIP THE COIN".....Buddy looked at him surprised and Weldon came unglued "What are you doing, Billy, there's no way you can beat Buddy, he never made a mistake".

Billy looked at Weldon with that calm smile and said "well then, you don't have to bet on me, now do you...... I'll take ALL the action".

Billy then proceeded to put a 15 PACK together and beat Buddy the set allowing him to the table only once (the only way he could win). That took the heart of a lion, and Weldon told me it's the most awesome display of offensive pool he have ever seen.

Billy Johnson taught me a lot about gambling and human nature, there was not a man alive that could beat him consistently when he was in stroke. To this day I believe Billy (Wade Crane) is the only player to ever shoot a perfect game in the finals of a tournament according to Accu-Stats.

Just playing Devil's advocate

If up front you talk about having time for just 1 set, aren't you giving someone who may be a hustler a leg up to win that match? Why does one person have to have all the etiquette? If hustler's were required to have etiquette, they wouldn't be hustling, right? They should come out and say they plan to lose the first couple matches in order to get you to bet more later, right?

I used to go into a hustler's den - a 24 hour joint with just a couple tables and some weekly rental hotels down the road. I'd go in there at midnight and leave at 8am. After having a traveling player down a couple grand at 6am, I gave him a 2 hour warning (we were playing $ per game, no set). He raised the bet and continued to lose. When I gave him the last game warning, he proceeded to launch the balls at me. So, communication doesn't always help.

This should be the agreed upon statement. Pay when you lose, quit when you want.

It depends on why you're there...

"I followed Alfie through three states. Nobody had any money left because the kid on the bicycle got it. He goes into every pool room, wins the money and they shake his hand when he goes out the door. How ya going to beat that?" Bill Lawson Winston Salem N.C.

If you're a hobbyist, playing your same buds regularly, a certain amount of decorum is expected, but if you're in it for the knife and fork, play, quit, do what you need to get the $. And, if you're going to be a sucker, be a quiet one.
Keep it in your pocket. Alfie
